When I read this comment in the Europarade-thread I guess it's not only a German problem:

    Quote:
For the first time in quite a while, there are exactly one hundred tracks appearing in the top fifteens of
Western Europe, as the music consumers of many countries are largely choosing tracks performed -
especially those "rapped" - in their own dominant language. This is particularly so in France - nine new
entries in the 2,235th Europarade included three from rapper Ninho, whose latest album occupies fourteen
of the top fifteen places in the French singles chart.

What would you say regarding Mero's album's first week sales in Germany? Mediatraffic have them estimated at 81k worldwide (=Germany, Austria, Switzerland). Charts.de have them estimated at 89.5% of Roland Kaiser's sales (the No. 10 album is at 33.6%). With no official announcement of the actual sales, which one is closer to the truth?

    ------------

In the US, rap remixes used to help singles get additional spins on the radio, e.g. Katy Perry's ET through the help of Kanye West's feature. In Germany, rap music used to be considered as shabby and inferior compared to singing, which is why radio stations used to edit out the rap parts in Olly Murs's 'Heart Skips a Beat' or Jessie J's 'Price Tag', as they could scare off listeners. Some rap albums could reach high peaks in the 00s (e.g. by Sido or Bushido) but never charted for long due to the lack of mainstream support. The albums by Casper or Cro were among the first rap albums to chart for a longer time, though they weren't pure hip hop but rather pop rap and rock rap. IIrc, Kollegah and Farid Bang were the first gangster rappers with very high opening sales, still without major longevity or mainstream support though. If you ask me, it was Boney MC and RAF Camora's 'Palmen aus Plastik' that changed the view on rap music in the German-speaking countries. The album has charted for over 2 years in Germany and 'Ohne mein Team' for a total of 88 weeks. Ever since its release, it got easier for rap releases to chart high and longer to a point where all singles charting in the top 10 are rap songs performed in German. Would you say that 'Ohne mein Team' sums up the current zeitgeist and therefore serves as an unofficial hymn of the youth in a way 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' used to in the mid 90s?

I kinda hate how these German rappers also took over the Swiss Charts these days. Plus Capital Bra already released another album today - he already released one in June and one in November last year, so three albums in less than a year. That's milking the cow IMO and I can't believe people actually buy that.

^ Rammstein released their physical single and Capital doesn't have his physical album out yet, he released early on digital due to a leak. Still interesting to see how much you depend on physicals, but it isn't a big surprise when it comes to first week peaks.

Walking On Cars ("Colours“, sieben) sowie die Pet Shop Boys ("Inner Sanctum - Live At The Royal Opera House, 2018", elf) setzen zusätzliche Akzente.

Don't know about you, @KokoCollino, but I'm surprised that Mike Singer made it to No. 1 this week as he was competing with Andrea Berg's 2nd week. Both of his albums, currently uncertified, debuted at No. 1 but dropped out of the top 10 in week 2. 'Deja Vu's opening sales weren't too impressive either as the No. 9 album sold 50% of it that week and Klubbb3's 'Wir werden immer mehr' almost outsold it (95%) with their 2nd week (and they are far from being as popular as Andrea Berg). Could it be that he's more popular now or is it just due to the higher price of his album's deluxe edition? On Amazon, Andrea Berg's album is still at No. 2 (behind Rammstein's pre-order album), Mike Singer's album is at No. 46.

To be honest I even feel like his popularity is decreasing because his streams on Spotify for his latest singles are kind of underwhelming. I'm 100% sure it's simply because of those expensive boxes.

It's his 3rd album to drop out of the top 10 in week 2, so he's got a small but loyal fanbase but hardly appeals to the main audience apparently (probably due to the lack of a hit single so far). Apparently, Andrea Berg's new album's opening is lower than usual for her, too. In Berg's debuting week, charts.de have Lena (No. 2) at 47.9% and even Gaga/Cooper's ' A Star Is Born't (No. 10) at 30.4%. That would mean <30k for Berg, which would be quite low for her standards.

Yeah, I feel like Andrea Berg's popularity is actually decreasing. It's similar in Austria/Switzerland.

In Switzerland, "Mosaik" fell 1-4 in its second week, with french rappers PNL rising 2-1 in their second week, Capital Bra debuting at #2 and BTS at #3 (only their second Top10 entry over here).

In Austria, it fell 1-2 with Capital Bra debuting at #1 without a physical release.

Of course, PNL are huge in the French speaking countries = also huge in Switzerland, Capital Bra is slaying the charts due to whatever reasons and BTS are riding on big hype as well, but it's still surprising to see her album already leaving the Top3 in CH and only spending one week at #1 in Austria (plus a similar picture in Germany).

Honestly, I overall already felt like the revival of German Schlager has started to decline lately. I know it still was a big success, but Helene Fischer's last album already didn't have the impact I expected. Same with Andrea now. And we could add Andreas Gabalier to that list as well.

I don't know whether it's legit to say that Helene Fischer's last album hasn't had that much of an impact, considering that it has sold 1.5 mio. copies in Germany alone. Being honest, its chart performance has even exceeded my expectations considering that neither 'Achterbahn' nor 'Herzbeben' were even close to as successful as 'Atemlos'.
Regarding Gabalier: You can tell that he's negatively affected by the lack of a hit single this time around. For 'Home Sweet Home', he had had the 'Sing meinen Song' exposure and 'Amoi', which was a single from his debut album but kind of associated with his then-current record. For 'Mountain Man', he had 'Hulapula', which gave the album significant longevity. And that additional push is missing this time around.

Regarding Andrea Berg: She's a very constant and popular singer in Germany - her last 6 (!) albums have all sold 500k+ copies. However, her previous 4 albums had been produced by Dieter Bohlen, 'Mosaik' wasn't. Would that harm its selling power?

A chart underdog, Kerstin Ott is actually doing very well. While she seemed a one-hit-wonder at first, 'Herzbewohner' has been charting for 83 weeks now and is close to 3x gold (according to my estimations). I have her current album 'Mut zur Katastrophe' estimated at ~ 260k and therefore is approaching 3x gold as well. Of course her success is not in the league of let's say Helene Fischer, but I'd still consider her sales a notable accomplishment considering that her Tracy Chapman-esque image is rather unconventional in the picture perfect world of Schlager.

@Mike Singer: According to charts.de, his album was the No. 9 seller of his opening week and only reached No. 1 because of his deluxe edition. That might explain the big 2nd week drop.

Do not forget that the album " Helene Fischer " of Helene Fischer is not available in streaming !! ... and the streaming has far much more impact than in 2015 for example!

The ranking of the album "Helene Fischer" is very good ... Probably not far from Farbenspiel if you consider the progress of streaming ! ... perhaps 1,8 - 2,0 mio. copies Germany alone at the end

" Herzbeben " has worked well ( yet in all 33 million streams ) ( " Atemlos " have yet in all almost 60 million streams , " Achterbahn " in all almost 20 million streams , " Nur mit dir " in all 11 million streams and " Flieger " in all almost 5,5 million streams )

Has anybody seen the video on youtube called "Der Rap Hack: Kauf Dich in die Charts! Wie Klickzahlen manipuliert werden"? At least the manipulation of the german charts could be possible.

^^ I always had a bad feeling about those instant No. 1 rap titles. They should really revise the chart rules regarding streaming in favor of chart reliability.

On a more positive note: Metallica's 'Metallica' is officially the 20th album to have certified shipments of more than 2 mio. copies. Congratulations!
