This is a thread for the appreciation and discussion of Mariah as a technical singer, her vocal health and nodules, and the influences and stylings that have shaped who she is as a vocalist (gospel, operatic, etc.). I have noticed a lot of discussion online about analyzing Mariah’s voice, note watching specific performances, and speculating about her vocal maturation/changes between eras. I think she is a fascinating singer to examine.

    The Songbird Supreme

Mariah wowed the world with her extraordinary 5+ octave voice, excellent grasp of vocal technique, and electrifying acrobatic vocal performances which are some of the most demanding in pop music. Backed by childhood vocal lessons from her mother, an opera singer, and a natural love of singing from an early age, she was able to create a unique style that has been one of the biggest influences on the next generations. Whether or not someone likes her music, she is unquestionably one of the best technical singers of all major pop stars. In her prime she had a clear, bright, and open belt going up to G#5, a whistle register that goes up at least into the seventh octave with beautiful tone, well-executed and accurate melisma, a surprisingly strong lower register for a singer who otherwise sounds more like a soprano, and amazing dynamics such as going from a high belt to a a whispery falsetto in the span of a word.
