Drake named Global Recording Artist of 2018

    26th February 2019
IFPI, the organisation that represents the recorded music industry worldwide, has named Drake as the world’s best-selling recording artist of 2018, following the global success of his fifth album Scorpion, including tracks God’s Plan, Nice for What and In My Feelings. Drake is the only artist to ever hold this title multiple times, with his first being in 2016.Released in June 2018, Drake’s 25-track double album broke multiple global records in its first week of release. Scorpion was the first album to reach one billion streams across all platforms worldwide. According to Apple Music, the album reached number one in 92 countries. Prior to the release of Scorpion, album track God’s Plan, released in January, broke first-day streaming records on Spotify and Apple with over 14 million streams.Drake is the recipient of the sixth IFPI Global Recording Artist of the Year Award; the unique and authoritative accolade that reflects an artist's worldwide success across digital and physical music formats, from streams to vinyl. Previous recipients of this prestigious award are One Direction (2013), Taylor Swift (2014), Adele (2015), Drake (2016) and Ed Sheeran (2017).Frances Moore, chief executive of IFPI, said: “Drake has had an incredible, record-breaking year, one that is more than worthy of the title of Global Recording Artist of the Year. That Drake has won this award for the second time is testament to his continued global appeal and his ability to engage and connect with fans.“This year’s Top Ten artists reflect the global appeal of music. From modern-day superstars like Drake, Ed Sheeran and Ariana Grande, to the rise of genres such as K-Pop, to legacy acts like Queen, fans are exploring and enjoying music of all types and from all corners of the world.”South Korean seven-piece boyband BTS take second place on IFPI’s list after the massive global success of album LOVE YOURSELF 轉 Tear, released in May 2018, and LOVE YOURSELF 結 Answer, released in August 2018. Since their formation in 2013, BTS have established a truly global fanbase – known as the ARMY – and have been instrumental in bringing K-Pop to a global stage.Ed Sheeran, the recipient of the 2017 award, maintains a strong position at third place with the continued popularity of his third studio album ÷ (Divide) and its singles, including the global smashes Shape of You, Castle on the Hill, Galway Girl and Perfect. The IFPI Global Recording Artist of the Year Award and top 10 chart was the first, and remains the only, ranking to accurately capture the engagement with artists across streaming channels, alongside digital and physical album and singles sales on a global basis.

No big surprise that Drake ended up at number 1. I didn't expect BTS to be at number 2 though.

Incidentally you've probably noticed that the new UKMix board has a problem with copy and paste where the article contains paragraphs. I raised this in the UKMix Helpdesk thread and was told that highlighting what has been copied and pasted and then pressing ctrl+Shift+v at the same time will reinsert the paragraphs (I have to do this when posting the weekly UK Chart Analysis reports from Music Week). You should be able to do this through an edit of your post but it definitely will work if you once again copy and paste the original article then highlight / use copy+shift+V.

Is it only going to be a list with no numbers how much they've actually sold?

If I recall the IFPI did the same last year, they published a list of the top global artists (for 2017) but with no overall sales figures though there was a list of the Global top 10 digital singles and albums which did contain sales figures.

I remember that one ukmix member did post list of top 50 with sales of albums in that thread (ifpi 2017) but never said the source? Was that list legit?

The top 10 digital singles are terrible! Only 3 are decent. Havana is a good song but slightly stained by the presence of Thug.

I find it hilarious that 4 of those songs appeared in the 2017 list too.

So they count streams for songs, but not for albums? That's a choice

Released alongside the hugely popular film, The Greatest Showman (OST) was a global success, topping charts in countries including Australia, Japan, UK and US. The album also reached number one on iTunes in over 60 countries. This is Me, the album’s lead single, charted in the top five in the UK and the top 10 in multiple other countries.
Max Lousada, CEO of Recorded Music, Warner Music Group, said: “At a time when the global possibilities for music feel limitless, it’s fitting that the biggest record of the year defied expectations and took the industry by surprise. South Korean boyband BTS take both the second and third chart positions with the albums LOVE YOURSELF 結 'Answer'released in August 2018, and LOVE YOURSELF 轉 'Tear', released in May 2018.

Their work, talent and dedication is matched by the passion and commitment of their global fanbase.”

There's something I don't understand. Why did they exclude South Korean boy band, EXO?
Here's the year-end chart compiled by Goan:

    1

    new
    LOVE YOURSELF 結 `Answer`
    방탄소년단
    2,197,808
    2

    new
    LOVE YOURSELF 轉 `Tear`
    방탄소년단
    1,849,537
    3

    new
DON`T MESS UP MY TEMPO - The 5th Album
    EXO
    1,452,030

Is the goan year-end chart based on pure sales? If so, I don't know why they're not in top 10.

Well, South Korean sales are counted (otherwise BTS figures won’t be that high).
But EXO wasn’t included last year either.
Maybe their label doesn’t report figures to IFPI or something

You might be right, probably it's something related to their label.
