    5. THERE'S GOT TO BE A WAY (1991)

The track garnered a mixed reception upon the album's release in 1990. While Carey's vocals were praised, it was seen as too political. An accompanying music video highlights social injustices.

begins with a shot of an empty street, followed by clips of disadvantaged and poorer members of society going about their daily activities. Two men play dominoes on a wooden crate outside a building, a gang make fun of an elderly man hanging newspapers outside his store and an obese woman walks down the street. Clips of Carey leaning against a wall and sitting on some steps looking on at what is happening are shown. As the first chorus begins, everyone starts to dance joyfully in the street and help those in need. A gospel choir comes out of one of the buildings as the street becomes more crowded with people of all ages and backgrounds rejoicing and getting along with each other. One of the shops in the background has a neon light outside the entrance which says "Jesus Saves."(source: wikipedia)

Strange video. Must admit this was my first time watching it! Some points:
    * the song is more smooth, liked it! So in this one and Someday she changed the version for the video from the album. In this case the change is much for the better.
    * her looks.. wow, sooooo 90s!
    * The blue&white images are not nice imo, the video could have been better without them.
    * "...it was seen as too political" gosh, how plain where music critics back then???

The video is ok, some cool scenes but other really cringy ones.

I agree the video is a bit strange but I honestly enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. The glittery bra, in the jeans suit and brown shoes made me lol. I think this video is a lot better than some of her recent releases tbh and may even work if released in 2019.

It also reminded me just how long her and Trey have been together. They're essentially a duo

the other back up singer was with her at least up to the MTV Unplugged I think. What was his name and why did he stopped working with her?

Maybe he decided to pursue his own musical career? Or perhaps served background vocals for some other bigger artists than Mariah at that time.
She was kind of fragile and she had a lot to grapple with but basically she kept it all inside ...

    6. EMOTIONS (1991)

The single's music video, directed by Jeff Preiss, features Carey and friends with exotic animals while partying and having fun around town in New York City. The video was desaturated but still maintains various color tints, which change from brown to red to blue and so forth. An official music video was created using the 12" club mix, but only slight changes in editing differentiate it from the video for the original version.

Mariah was sent to work with the C+C Music Factory and they composed the song "You're So Cold", which became the first choice for the album's first single. However, a second session with the production team had them feeling in a lighter mood when "Emotions" was created and finally decided upon as the lead single. And You're So Cold was not even a sencond, third or fourth single!

YouTube Views as of May 4th 2019: 29.548.254 for album version, 2.704.669 for 12" Club Mix.

If you have to rate the video from 1 star to 5 stars, how would you rate it?

Love the changes of colours. She looks nice, enjoying herself and the process. Fits the song.

I shared that little fact about You're So Cold going to be the first single until this was wirtten. Thankfully this amazing song was created and included in this era.

    7. CAN'T LET GO (1991)

Carey had fallen out with her songwriting partner Ben Margulies following a financial dispute, and her record label suggested that she work with the other producers of her debut album such as Rhett Lawrence, Ric Wake and Narada Michael Walden. She chose Walter Afanasieff, who had produced her second single "Love Takes Time" (1990), and "Can't Let Go" was one of the songs they created. After the release of the single "Emotions," "Can't Let Go" was promoted on both The Arsenio Hall Show in September 1991 and Saturday Night Live in November 1991 when she was the musical guest in the episode which featured Linda Hamilton as the host.

The single's video, directed by Jim Sonzero, features Carey wearing an evening gown and her hair in a bun. Filmed in black and white, the video starts and closes with shots of a rose open and closed respectively. A radio edit of the song was promoted to radio and used for the video instead of the original song, and the edit eliminates the seraphic pre-intro and removes all of Carey's high notes at the song's beginning and end.

The thing about Cant Let Go is that it is one of my favourite songs by MC and that automatically boosts that video. I cant say the video is memorable on its own though.

    2.5/5

In a similar tone, I think the song is sublime and deserved a better video. But still, some shots are really beautiful, with the B&W and shades, thing is that it needed an extra thing. Anyway, I think the video is ok and rate it 3/5

    There's Got To Be A Way: 2.5/5

Like most of her early videos: nothing special.
I did see it back in the day when MTV had a Mariah weekend. I didn't see it on regular basis when it was released as a single though.

    Emotions: 2/5
Never really liked this video. I find the different colours weird.

    Can't Let Go: 2.5/5
I like the way Mariah looks and I love the flowers. All very classy. But as nothing really happens, it gets boring.

Strange. Back then everybody was doing these kind of songs. Janet had an album full of them and was very successful with her Rhythm Nation songs.

Don't know why he stopped working with her, but I believe his name was Patrick McMillan. He did become the leadsinger of Aerial Tribe. Maybe that was the reason to stop working as a background vocalist.

Back in 1991 when I bought the album, You're So Cold was my instant favorite. Love the intro.
