The idea got so obviously borrowed from JakeP Top 100 UK #1s, but I've decided to list some other charts beside the Official UK chart (as an excuse to have a larger pool of songs I might like).
So I've included songs that reached #1 at least in one chart during 2000s (2000-2009) in the following countries: UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Germany, Spain, Italy, France, Netherlands, Belgium (Flanders & Wallonia), Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Austria, Switzerland.
So you might get some pretty unknown #1s here (outside of those specific countries).

If Britney doesn't make your list at least once, I'll report this thread.

I predict a single entry, as you might remember in my JakeP remarks. It's surprising how some of the national charts provided a shelter for my faves.
There might be some troll entries as well.

#100. Vertical Horizon - Everything You Want

    USA Billboard Hot 100 #1
    Year of release: 2000
    Genre: Post-grunge, Alternative Rock

Back when post-grunge bands were still able to score hits. The song in general deals with unrequited love.
The song is pretty much forgotten now, and is the only song on the whole list to score #1 in just the United States (which is quite a feat).

I have never heard of that song before (or, at least, I can't remember it). Sounds very early 2000s indeed.

#99 My Chemical Romance - Welcome To The Black Parade

    Year of release: 2006
    #1 in United Kingdom
    Genre: Alternative Rock, Emo

We've reached peak emo here. Well, at least My Chemical Romance put a Queen-ish make-up on their lead single back in 2006. Still, the very distinguished status of #1 single in the UK official chart felt a bit too much.
The music video looks lavish and expensive though.

It's alright, I don't expect many UKMixers to remember this one.

    #98 Fur Patrol - Lydia

    Year of release: 2000
    Genre: Pop/rock
    #1 in New Zealand

I was always fascinated by NZ scene, the way they made some awesome records on shoestring budget and NZ on air government assistance program, the local nature of their scene, and the lo-fi appeal...everything that strikes a chord with me.
Fur Patrol was a relatively successful female-fronted alternative, pop/rock band in the late 1990s-2000s.
In 2001 their only NZ #1 single, "Lydia", was voted the 19th best New Zealand song of all time by APRA and featured on Nature's Best.
Check out the mid 8 production, especially the overprocessed electric guitar sound in the second part of the song.

I wanted to do the same list with 150-200 songs, but for all years.
My Top 100 UK # 1s already was compiled and I easily can post it on UKMix.
My celebrity crushes : Monika Sedziuviene, Kristina Ivanova (YVA).

Dreamer, you must to visit Lithuania and see/listen a live concert of your YVA strawberries.

you see, if I do a list for all years, I would have to come to some tough decisions and putting several Beatles' and Rolling Stones' classics outside the top 100 which may get my hipster passage revoked

    lol

I almost took "Lydia" for FSC this month but in the end, I prefer(ed) a few other tracks. It's a great tune, though!

    Nice!
I guess it's was a bit too loungy to make it outside New Zealand.

#97 Sabaton - Cliffs of Galipoli

    Year of Release: 2008
    Genre: Power Metal
    #1 in Sweden.

Sabaton's "The Art Of War" album is based on Sun Tzu military treatise and here is the lead single. I am pretty sure that by the late 2000s there was only a handful of countries where a power metal song could have reached #1 in the singles chart.

    #96 Alphabeat - The Spell

    Year of release: 2009
    Genre: Synthpop, Europop
    #1 in Denmark

A catchy slice of danish europop signalled a change of sound & style for the band that didn't really go that well outside Denmark (it barely managed to score a top 20 hit in the UK, but failed to match the "Fascination" success).

#95 Gunther & The Sunshine Girls – Ding Dong Song (You Touch My Tralala)

    Year of release: 2004
    Genre: Europop, Parody
    #1 in Sweden

So bad its fun. Novelty found its way to the #1 spot in Sweden. Well, the concept is kinda cheeky & weird at the same time, while the music video is a little bit NSFW. Doing a stereotypically German/European porn/sleazy persona provided a source for its virality. But it still does sound funny.
Fun fact: The producer of "Ding Dong Song", Anderz Wrethov is also responsible for "Fuego" and multiple Melodifestivalen entries.

    #94 Nizlopi - JCB Song

    Year of release: 2005
    Genre: Folk
#1 in the United Kingdom & Ireland

A heartfelt song dedicated to a dad. Quite a surprising #1, and it was a contender for the UK Christmas Number One as well.

Besides several European countries (Finland, Sweden and Spain), metal music was pushed to the fringe during the 2000s.

    #93 Owl City - Fireflies

    Year of release: 2009
    Genre: Electropop, Synthpop
#1 in USA, Germany, Ireland, Denmark, Sweden, Australia, Netherlands (Single Top 100)

The only reason this song is not as high as it could have been is because it got so overplayed. Initially I thought US #1 is out of reach for this cute little (emo-electronica) song, but suddenly it got traction and overwhelming support.

Aww i love Fireflies but it wasn't until 2010 when the track got released in the UK so didn't qualify for my top 100 of the 00s.

Speaking of which, i'm kinda honoured that my countdown from two years ago has been influential in this regard.

I've been meaning to do a JakeP top 100 UK #2s of the 00s...but i've just not got round to going through all the charts to compile a thorough list of my favourites. One day...

The only downside to using european charts is that i won't know any of those songs. I only really started to take more interest in Australia and Sweden around the turn of this decade tbh.

There'll be something to discover or at least shrug at the fact that a particular song managed to reach the #1 spot in some country.

    #92 Mika – Grace Kelly

    Year of release: 2007
    Genre: Pop, Pop/rock, Glam rock
#1 in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Norway, Italy, Belgium (Wallonia)

Mika's arrival was quite glamourous, with a single so vocally flamboyant and over-the-top it can be compared to some of the poppier Freddie Mercury/Queen songs.

    Great idea for a countdown!

So far I love 'Everything You Want' and 'Fireflies'.
