This Week's Billboard News and Charts

As many of you are aware billboard subscription charts have been changed in line with their non-subscription charts, really hard to read and very difficult to put into what many would consider a classic chart format. Previously I was able to copy, format and post a chart in 40 seconds. I have looked at the new lay out and haven't managed to get it in any reasonable format in under 10 minutes. Obviously prohibitive to post more than a couple of charts.

At the moment all billboard charts are available to everyone, not sure how long this will last so maybe not necessary to continue with this thread.

If I can come up with something that will make it easy to put charts into a readable format OR if anyone can produce one for me I will look at it.

I am going on holiday for a couple of weeks (Nashville here I come ) so will look again when I get back. Maybe after 6 years of running this thread and a further 6 years contributing it is time to step aside.

Any thoughts or ideas please let me know.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    Just for you

Please, if possible: could you check if they updated the dance club songs breakouts from 11/05/2019 and 20/07/2019...

The original threads are missing some positions....

One option I have found is to download the pages using Chrome and a add-on called "Simple Mass Downloader". As all the links always follow the same format that means that a template can be found and then all can be grabbed in a few seconds.

I then open the html files in excel with a right click option on windows to get the date in a table. An example is below for the Cast Albums chart (Purely as an example of the process I use).

    Code:
Two Weeks Ago	Last Week	this Week Certification RIAA	Pos Peak.	Weeks On Chart
    --	--	1	#1 1 wks 1	1
    			Hadestown
    			Original Broadway Cast Recording
    			Sing It Again
Now this is not very good to read, but can be copied into a template in Excel to ensure that it's formatted correctly.

    This then forms the following.

    Code:
this Week	Last Week	Two Weeks Ago	Weeks On Chart	Title	Artist	Imprint, Label

1	--	--	1	#1 1 wks	Hadestown	Original Broadway Cast Recording	Sing It Again
0	0	0	0	Hadestown	Original Broadway Cast Recording	Sing It Again
0	0	0	0	Original Broadway Cast Recording	Sing It Again	Hamilton: An American Musical
Filtering the excel to remove the zeros in the this week column gives

this Week Last Week Two Weeks Ago Weeks On Chart Title Artist Imprint, Label
1 -- -- 1 #1 1 wks Hadestown Original Broadway Cast Recording Sing It Again
2 1 1 201 Hamilton: An American Musical Original Broadway Cast Recording Atlantic, Hamilton Uptown
3 2 2 710 Wicked Original Broadway Cast Recording Verve, Decca Broadway
4 4 3 130 Dear Evan Hansen Original Broadway Cast Recording Atlantic, Autumn Smile Broadway Limited Liability
5 3 9 8 Beetlejuice Original Broadway Cast Recording Ghostlight
6 6 4 112 Come From Away: A New Musical Original Broadway Cast Recording Molly, The Musical Compnay
7 8 5 649 The Lion King Original Broadway Cast Recording Walt Disney
8 10 6 15 SIX: The Musical The Studio Cast Recording Historemix, 6ix
9 11 -- 19 Hadestown: The Myth. The Musical. Live Original Cast Recording Parlophone
    10 -- -- 1 Co-Op (EP) Original Cast Lakeshore
11 9 7 17 Ain't Too Proud: The Life And Times Of The Temptations Original Broadway Cast Recording Motown
12 15 13 57 Mean Girls Original Broadway Cast Recording Atlantic
13 12 14 409 The Book Of Mormon Original Broadway Cast Recording Ghostlight
14 -- 12 19 The Prom Original Broadway Cast Recording Masterworks Broadway
15 14 10 562 The Phantom Of The Opera Original London Cast Recording Polydor, Really Useful

Which looks very like the below from @BrainDamageII

    The Billboard 200

TW LW 2W WOC Title Artist ( Peak ) Imprint | label
    1 Hot Shot Debut 1 The Search ‒ NF ( 1 ) Capitol | NF Real Music
2 New 1 The Big Day ‒ Chance The Rapper ( 2 ) Chance The Rapper
    3 1 1 3 No.6 Collaborations Project ‒ Ed Sheeran ( 1 ) Atlantic | AG
    4 3 2 18 When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? ‒ Billie Eilish ( 1 ) Darkroom/Interscope | IGA

Process does take slightly longer than 45 seconds... more like 50... but with practice and the right templates all set up...

    Just my thoughts.

Figured Lonnie would come up with a "quicker" method. Was wondering, if you were to use your process with the Bubbling Under chart...does your Excel look something like this one:

I would imagine so. I haven’t actually done it, but yes thats what should appear.

Some people post lovely tables here and I can’t figure out how to do that so it is always entirely possible there is a simple way to simply copy the existing table from the HTML and paste that.

Far prefer simple text charts to look at than Billboards one's with graphics, picture icons and drop downs.
I'm not that well up on Excel only use it from time to time.
The chart examples above look fine.

I don't known if you were copying the source files or highlighting the text and graphics and pasting into excel.
Then would not know how to format to get the text results shown above.

Could you please explain with simply step by step instructions how to do this.

Could you start with one of the missing charts from this week such a Top Country Albums

I've made a simple webapp that can convert any chart from billboard to the text format (similar to what was posted in this thread by BrainDamageII) or old biz layout (incomplete at this moment, e.g. missing gain highlights and bullets, but can be updated in the future).

    Link to app: https://wutang4ever.github.io/bbbchart/

Usage: copy and paste link for any billboard chart (e.g. https://www.billboard.com/charts/bil...200/2019-08-03 ) .

Any comments and suggestions are welcome. I'll be able to update the code to change the format if needed. If you encounter any error, please post here. If app suddenly stops working (it might), also post here.

Hope it's helpful and you can enjoy it.

I have been testing it myself, and have already noticed some issues, so at this point I strongly urge you to spot check the output and report all bugs here so I can fix them.

    The app works great!

A possible addition: a button to copy the plain text table to clipboard.

Worked great for me also. Looking good for the future of this thread!
A possible addition: output in a spreadsheet but beggars can't be picky!!

I added Excel export. It's unstyled, but if you suggest which styling you prefer I could add later.

Also, the issue that I mentioned finding yesterday, for now I only saw it for Alternative chart - for example https://www.billboard.com/charts/alt...ngs/2019-07-13 , - is with incorrect peak positions for places 39 and 40. It's still not fixed, I will fix it some time later. Logging here, so that all found issues are in one place.

So far I am amazed at all this. I grew up in the age when calculators were just being introduced!!!

For me it would be great if the excel file had the chart title at the top and maybe the date. Otherwise, just fantastic.

I do believe Billboard will put some charts in subscription. Just showing my stupidity here but I guess even if I can see the chart through subscription this app won't work

Have posted a couple of last weeks missing charts in that thread, works so well. Will try and update other missing ones in time.

Just noticed, its my 12th UKmix birthday

It's still not fixed, I will fix it some time later. Logging here, so that all found issues are in one place.
I created the Excel for the Bubbling Under Hot 100 and noticed that the peak position for all the new entries were not listed. Similar issue for the "Get Text" and "Get Biz Layout" options. These positions are listed on the original on-line chart. For the excel would it be possible to add a column for songwriters and relocate the "Peak" column so it's not between the ARTIST and LABEL columns? Also chart name at the top would be a great addition.

Just wondering what billboard intends to do with their subscription site. Not looking like there will be anything there that is not on the free site - so what would subscribers be paying for? Doesn't seem like Billboard is even communicating with their subscribers about changes and the future.

Yeah. Waiting to hear from them, too. I'll probably cancel my subscription if the archives remain to be laid open.
