    Well, here it is.

The next best thing to having the actual charts, have them virtualy.

    Okay.

    GROUND RULES

Numero Uno (One, to you and me)

I will post what I have. More than that I can not say.

    Numero 2

    Charts Currently In My Database

    Sheet Music Charts
    07-Jan-1952 to 08-Nov-1952
These are taken from Polyhex Website and are all Top 10’s

    NME Singles Charts
Classed as Official (before 05-Mar-60) and Unofficial (after)
My way of thinking is that NME was the most accurate (evidence to support this will NOT be forthcoming) but the compilers of British Hit Singles skipped over this fact and went for the Top 50. (rant over)

    15-Nov-1952 to 27-Dec-1969

Thanks to Vicky Williams and Wormer_UK for these.

Record Retailer / Music Week Singles Charts
    12-Mar-1960 to 07-Feb-2004
    Top 50 (1960 to 1978)
    Top 75 (1978 to 2004)

From 1983 a Top 100 (not posted) and from 1994 a Top 200 (not posted)*

    * not strictly true . . .

    Record Retailer EP Charts
    12-Mar-1960 to 16-Dec-1967
    Top 10, Top 15, Top 20 then back to a Top 10.
    I have all of these.

    Thought this might help.

Below I am posting the singles charts (and the EP Charts by 1960). I'll start another thread for album charts when and if I get them all.

Okay - seeing as kingofskiffle has started this thread - can I add to it?

Here's a few points from me...

    1) I too have things I have, and things I want...

    I have...
    • All top 40 UK singles charts from the first chart to today
    • All top 50 singles charts from sometime in the mid 70s (can't remember when)
    • All top 75 charts from 1994 onwards - apart from some re-releases in the period 1994-1998

    I want...
    • The rest of the UK singles chart - i.e. numbers 41-50 for the time before I have a top 50 singles chart (I will find out when this date is later) and all the Nos 51-75 from the start to 1993.

My reason for wanting them? https://www.ukmix.org/articles/charts

It's a great list that myself and Tom (eamezey) created, but we're short on a few of the lower positions.

Now.... onto the second thing I have to say...

Can we please make this topic the official thread for anyone asking for historical chart data?

Therefore, allowing that - people who start other threads requesting data will have that thread deleted and assuming I'm feeling generous (which I might not always feel) I'll post their request myself in here ;-)

There, that's not too much to ask, is it

Feel free! I just want to share what I have, hence I start it. I would like to get something out of it (like, what I''m missing) but I don't mind if I don't.

kingofskiffle- What a wonderful resource to be added. It's very kind of you to share your hard work with everyone.

I am not after a chart but after the answer to a question which seems most relevant to put here although it pertains to Hanboo's information as well. Do you know what the "Official" Charts were at any given time? By that, I suppose I mean those that the BBC used since 1967(?)or whenever they started broadcasting the charts. Were there any "official" charts until the company with that name turned up?
I know music. Music has notes. This is noise.

The First Music chart was NME in 52. That was not, then, oifficial. SHeet Music CHarts where. After 1960 and before 1969 every music paper had a chart. The 'Official' one, so called, because everyone refes to it as such weas the Record Retailer chart, began in March 1960. However, they where never that accurate as they sampled less shops than NME. In the 60's (have asked Dad and he should know) the official chart was NME - without a shadow of a doudt.

In 1969 the BBC wanted there own chart (before this and after 1958 they compiled ther pown by averaging three pop papers - NME, Melody Maker and another whos name escapes me at present). They got together and paid for an official chart, compiled by the Offica Of Statistics in the UK. Since then the chart's name and compiler has changed, but since 1969 the official chart has been the Music Week one - Simply because it added up record sales and nothing else.

Is that Official? Technicaly yes, but what about today? I don't know, really.

I want the NME charts from the 60's so I can make a comparison of whats official and whats not. And so I can run queries to compare a chart of any given week with the 'official' one.

    Hope that answers the question!

Well, here's the first chart post.

I have been fiddelling with the formatting a little at home and I like the way this should look.

    Hope you all like it.

But, before I do, a few thank yous. Most of the charts I have I found myself on the Internet in sites now gone (dotmusic) or sites which update weekly (Hi, Charter!) I would like to thank Polyhex, Hanboo and Vicky Williams, late of Dotmusic (all of whom are here, although Vicky is in a different guise).

Vicky, in particular, deserves a mention, cos she posted all these on Dotmusic. I just copied.

Hanboo and Polyhex both helped me with the formating of my Access2000 query and report to get the data posted in the right form. So, a huge thank you to you both. I, as I have said before elsewhere, have no knowledge of HTML, beyond the really basic stuff. So, thanks guys!

I will always credit the people who gave me the charts (If I can A) remember and B) knew in the first place)

    CORRECTIONS

I will correct any and all errors spotted and then re-post.

The aim of this is to share what I have and to correct what I have. I currently have 142,577 chart positions in my database. That leads, inevitably, to errors. So, NO MATTER HOW SMALL THE ERROR MAY SEEM TO YOU, I'd like to know about it!

They will be corrected and the post re-posted.

    And now, for the charts . . . .

I have decided that I'll post all the Singles Charts here, from 15-November-1952 to 28-December-2003

I won't post any later than that, because Hanboo has his Chart Analysis from then on posted here.

This will happen over the next year or so as I have 1952 to 1964 in the database and 1965 to 1969 to add in. After that, I have only Top 40's, but I'll post these if nothing else turns up. It should, so don't worry!

When I finish, I'll post the Album Charts for the same period. Might start a different thread for that, as that will be in 2005.

Until then, heres the first. I'll do them by year, with the exception of the first one (1952 being so short a year, chart wise)

The charts used are the NME singles Charts (1952 to 1960)

Thank you to Vicky Williams for these, by the way.

Any problems / Comments / Etc, please post below before OCC find out and shut the thread down!

    Thanks for doing this!

Don't worry about OCC, at least for the charts of the early years as the NME charts are not owned in any shape or form by the OCC and I promise you they can't do a thing to stop you posting them.

It's highly debatable whether OCC could stop you posting the Record Retailer / Music Week charts from before February 1994 as both they and their predecessor, CIN did not exist. I assume it depends on whether OCC holds the rights to charts compiled before OCC/CIN were formed?

My thoughts are: go ahead and put the charts up!

Thought I'd add a little commentary to the charts I post. May be of interest, may not . . . If not, then don't read it!

    1952

The First Chart Of Them All.
It was in the 1940's that the first chart was compiled in Britain and that was for sales of Sheet music. America had them far earlier, but I don't really know the dates, and this is for British Charts, so I'll stick to them. In 1952 on the 14th of November issue the recently restyled 'New Musical Express', as apposed to 'Musical Express', printed it's first chart. The reason was to win a ratings war with 'Melody Maker' who, the same week, celebrated its 1000 issue. And that is why the chart was started on 14-Nov-52.

The first chart listed 78RPM records and had the current sheet music number 1 as it's number 1 on sales. The staff of N.M.E. where told to ring around various London based music shops to prepare the first chart. Of course, in later years the chart compilation was contracted out when the volume of shops increased above one hundred (around 1960).

But history was made and, after a relatively slow start, public interest picked upon the new chart when, in 1955, a man from America said 'One, Two, Three O'clock, Four O'clock Rock'. But that is for a later year.

MOST WEEKS ON CHART - ARTISTS - 1952
NOTE - My database dose not differentiate between different artists. If, for example, the credit is 'Vera Lynn featuring Lonnie Donegan' then this is a separate act and is treated accordingly.

NO - FIRST DATE THIS PERIOD - WKS - ARTIST
SEVEN CHARTS IN TOTAL FOR YEAR
    01 - 15-11-52 - 10 - Vera Lynn
    02 - 15-11-52 - 09 - Bing Crosby
    02 - 15-11-52 - 09 - Nat 'King' Cole
    02 - 15-11-52 - 09 - Jo Stafford
    05 - 15-11-52 - 08 - Al Martino
    06 - 15-11-52 - 07 - Rosemary Clooney
    06 - 15-11-52 - 07 - Mario Lanza
    06 - 15-11-52 - 07 - Frankie Laine
    06 - 15-11-52 - 07 - Guy Mitchell
    10 - 15-11-52 - 06 - Doris Day and Frankie Laine

    1953

The year contains the longest run at number 1 ever. Well, until 24-01-04 at any rate. Frankie Laine's I Believe spent 18 weeks at number 1 in a run of 9, then 6 and then 3 weeks at the top spot. In all he had 27 weeks at number 1 this year.

Other than that not much happened this year. Other than a little man from Glasgow made ready to make a record to change the course of popular music. But that's a story for 1954 . . .

MOST WEEKS ON CHART - ARTISTS - 1953

NO - FIRST DATE THIS PERIOD - WKS - ARTIST
FIFTY TWO CHARTS IN TOTAL FOR YEAR
    01 - 21-03-53 - 66 - Frankie Laine

    03 - 03-01-53 - 45 - Eddie Fisher
    04 - 03-01-53 - 39 - Nat 'King' Cole
    05 - 03-01-53 - 34 - Mantovani
    06 - 03-01-53 - 28 - Al Martino
    07 - 23-05-53 - 24 - Frank Chacksfield
    08 - 16-05-53 - 23 - Ron Goodwin
    09 - 23-05-53 - 18 - Eddie Fisher with Sally Sweetland
    09 - 10-01-53 - 18 - Winifred Atwell

    53 - 06-06-53 - 01 - Vera Lynn FOR COMPARISON

And now, onto the charts for 1954. Commentary to follow soon.
