Biggest drop ever for an album that debuted at number one. Second biggest drop ever after Bon Jovi (1-169 for This House Is Not For Sale). Both because of the added concert ticket bundles.

Target & Walmart Help Propel Vinyl Album Sales to Blockbuster Week
    12/2/2019 by Keith Caulfield

Vinyl album sales in the U.S. surged pass the half-million mark last week, scoring the second-largest week for vinyl in 2019.

According to Nielsen Music, 544,000 vinyl albums were sold in the U.S. in the week ending Nov. 28 (up a big 60% compared to the previous week’s tally of 340,000). The 544,000 haul is the second-biggest week for the format this year, behind only the 827,000 sold during Record Store Day week (week ending April 18).

To compare, in 2018, during the tracking week that ended with Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 22, 2018), there were 355,000 vinyl albums sold. And, in the week ending with Thanksgiving Day in 2017 (Nov. 23, 2017), there were 331,000 vinyl LPs sold.

The gain in vinyl sales in the tracking week ending Nov. 28, 2019 is largely owed to sale pricing and promotion by Target and Walmart. Starting on Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 28, the final day of the tracking week), all vinyl albums in Walmart stores were discounted to $15, while Target offered a key selection of vinyl LPs for just $15. Both offers were advertised in each company’s widely-read weekly circular advertisements touting in-store promotions and deals for Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday (Nov. 29).

Nielsen reports that 42% of all vinyl albums sold in the week ending Nov. 28 were purchased through mass merchant stores, of which Target and Walmart are both categorized. Comparably, in the eight weeks previous, mass merchants would normally account for anywhere between 6% to 15% of a week’s overall vinyl album sales. (Traditionally, the bulk of vinyl LP sales in a week will come from online retailers such as Amazon, and independent or non-traditional record stores.)

Among the titles touted in Target’s ad: The Beatles’ Abbey Road, Billie Eilish’s When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, Ariana Grande’s Thank U, Next and Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black. As for Walmart, their ad highlighted three titles: Abbey Road, Queen’s Greatest Hits and a deluxe edition of the Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1 soundtrack.

Sales of vinyl albums at both Target and Walmart were also enhanced by how they also carry exclusive variants of some titles. For example, Target has a glow-in-the-dark green vinyl edition of When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? which was included in the $15 promotion.

The top five selling vinyl albums in the week ending Nov. 28 were:

    1. When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? (20,000; up 345% compared to the previous week’s sales),
    2. Abbey Road (19,000; up 385%),
    3. Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1 (16,000; up 786%),
    4. Queen’s Greatest Hits (14,000; up 563%) and
    5. Prince and The Revolution’s Purple Rain soundtrack (8,000; up 584%).

For sales and charting purposes, all versions and variants of an album are generally combined together for one overall sales sum and chart position.

Both Target and Walmart’s $15 sale pricing lasted in-stores through Friday, Nov. 29, while supplies lasted. Some of the discounted LPs were still priced at $15 online at Target.com and Walmart.com by Monday (Dec. 2). In turn, we should see another big week for vinyl sales in the week ending Dec. 5, as that week will include Black Friday (Nov. 29) along with the very busy post-Thanksgiving shopping weekend, along with Cyber Monday (Dec. 2).

Lizzo, Post Malone, Taylor Swift, Shania Twain & More Get AMAs Boost on Album Charts
    12/2/2019 by Keith Caulfield

Performances on the 2019 American Music Awards aid an array of acts.

Acts such as Lizzo, Post Malone and Shania Twain surge on Billboard’s album charts in the wake of their respective performances at the 2019 American Music Awards. The Nov. 24 ABC TV broadcast housed performances from a galaxy of stars, with a number of notable titles seeing gains on Billboard charts as a result.

Post Malone took the stage to perform a medley of his current Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit “Circles” and another track, “Take What You Want,” and the album that houses both tracks, Hollywood’s Bleeding, gets a 6% boost in total equivalent album units earned in the week ending Nov. 28 (73,000), according to Nielsen Music. The album shifts 3-4 on the Billboard 200 dated Dec. 7, pushed down despite its gain thanks to a pair of debuts above the set. (The Dec. 7-dated charts will be posted to Billboard's websites on Dec. 3.)

Lizzo’s Cuz I Love You rallies 25-22 on the Billboard 200 with 22,000 units earned (up 22%) following her performance of the album’s “Jerome” on the AMAs.

Jonas Brothers, who performed “Only Human,” from their Happiness Begins album, see the album get a gain of 6% in units earned (rising to 13,000), as the album moves 53-54.

Taylor Swift, who performed a medley of hits, has a pair of albums on the Billboard 200 that post increases: 1989 (135-109 with 8,000 units; up 24%) and reputation (163-156 with 7,000 units; up 12%).

Shania Twain’s best-of collection, Greatest Hits, re-enters the Top Country Albums chart at No. 36 with 4,000 units (up 41%) following her show-closing hits medley.

Many performers on the show sang tunes that are not yet available on albums, including A Great Big World and Christina Aguilera’s “Fall on Me,” Dua Lipa’s “Don’t Start Now,” Halsey’s “Graveyard,” Kesha’s “Raising Hell,” featuring Big Freedia, and Selena Gomez’s “Look at Her Now” and “Lose You to Love Me.”

Notably, the combined songs performed on the show, across all performances (and discounting any brand new-to-market tracks), tallied a 4% gain in on-demand streams on Nov. 24-26, as compared to the three days prior to the show (Nov. 21-23). All told, the performed tunes earned 73.4 million on-demand streams on Nov. 24-26 versus 70.3 million on Nov. 21-23.

    Catalog Albums/Billboard 200 Chart Update – December 7, 2019

Queen’s Greatest Hits Reaches Half of 2019 at #1; The Long And Winding ‘Road’

Queen’s Greatest Hits returns to #1 for the 26th time this year on the Catalog chart, and 30 weeks overall. It’s the second straight week an album reached 30 weeks at #1, with Michael Buble’s Christmas checking in last week. Queen’s Greatest Hits becomes the second album of the decade to spend half of a calendar year at the top spot, with Adele’s 19 topping the chart for 27 weeks in 2011… The Beatles’ Abbey Road returns to the #2 spot and also remains in the lead on Catalog Sales for the 7th time this year (9th overall). It’s the leader on the chart among Beatles reissues with respect to weeks at #1.

On the Billboard 200, Queen’s Greatest Hits takes #14, with The Beatles and Michael Buble (who settles for #3 Catalog this week) also in the top 20. In leading the Catalog Sales chart, The Beatles’ Abbey Road climbs to #6 Album Sales, with Queen not far behind rising 26-8. A third spot in the top 10 goes to another Catalog album, Guardians Of The Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1, which at #7 reaches its highest position while a Catalog album… The total number of top 10 appearances on Top Album Sales for Catalog albums this year is now 28, just one off the record set in 2016. (Records are only kept since the Sales chart was established as distinct from the BB200 in late 2014.)

Christmas by the numbers: Christmas begins to takes off this week. The Catalog chart number jumps from 6 to 17, with two albums debuting, one returning for the first time in 2019, eight returning that charted in January 2019, and no dropouts… Seven Christmas albums return to the BB200, two for the first time this year, and one drops out to provide a net gain of six, from 13 to 19 albums… It was a very odd week on Catalog Sales, though, as the Christmas number there drops a bit. The chart featured no Christmas debuts, one returning Christmas album (last seen on the chart in 1996; see Wandering Stars below), and six Christmas albums dropping out, bringing the number of Christmas albums on the CS tally from 25 down to 20.

    MIG’S MILESTONES
The Carpenters, Christmas Portrait – #199 BB200 – Week #50 in the top 200 albums(*) as a Catalog album for this 1978 release.
    Rumours, Fleetwood Mac – #27 Cat, #98 BB200, #31 CS – 350 weeks overall in the top 200 albums(*); another 1970s release (1977).
2Pac, Greatest Hits – #36 Cat, #113 BB200 – With its 2224th week on the chart since 2012, the album reaches 300 total on the BB200.
Rihanna, ANTI – #177 BB200 – 200 weeks on the BB200 total; this early 2016 release has been on the chart every week since its debut except the first of this year.
The Notorious B.I.G., Greatest Hits – #178 BB200 – Spent only 9 weeks on the Comprehensive chart in its original run (2007), yet reaches 200 weeks in the top 200(*) this week.
    Drake, Views – #30 Cat, #105 BB200 – 50th week on the Catalog chart.
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Greatest Hits – #33 Cat, #108 BB200, #49 CS – Up to 750 weeks on the Catalog Sales chart.
    Nirvana, Nevermind – #170 BB200, #47 CS – 200th week on Catalog Sales.
(*) = Total includes Comprehensive chart weeks from late 2003 – late 2009.

    NEW ON THE CHARTS
John Legend, A Legendary Christmas – #11 Cat – Debuts on the Catalog chart after re-entering the BB200 last week; it’s also #52 BB200 and #16 CS this week.
Brenda Lee, Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree: The Decca Christmas Recordings – #35 Cat, #112 BB200 – First week on the Catalog chart for an album that spent a couple of weeks on the BB200 in the 2017-18 season, and returns to the BB200 for the first time since then. As you are no doubt aware, this album’s success derives almost entirely from the title track.
Frank Sinatra, Icon: Frank Sinatra – #194 BB200, #9 CS – This 2013 release reaches the BB200 for the first time and debuts in the CS top 10 to become Sinatra’s 28th entry on that chart (including one with Count Basie and another with Dean Martin & Sammy Davis Jr.).
Nine Inch Nails, With Teeth – #34 CS – First entry for this 2005 #1 album. It’s only the fourth NIN album on this chart, and their first appearance since 2010 when Pretty Hate Machine (#1 and 174 weeks on chart) was last on.

WANDERING STARS – Reserved for long-absent albums returning to the charts:
Prince & The Revolution, Purple Rain (Soundtrack) – #19 Cat, #79 BB200, #6 CS – One of several non-Christmas albums to get a big gain this week, it reaches the Catalog chart for the first time in 2019 despite 28 weeks on CS.
Steve Miller Band, Greatest Hits 1974-78 – #24 Cat, #90 BB200, #8 CS – First Catalog week of 2019; it has 46 weeks (all but three) on CS this year.
Elvis Presley, The Classic Christmas Album – #25 Cat, #93 BB200, #23 CS – First Catalog and BB200 weeks of 2019.
Amy Winehouse, Back To Black – #175 BB200 – First top 200 week of 2019. It hasn’t reached the Catalog chart this year, but has 46 CS weeks.
KISS, Destroyer – #180 BB200, #10 CS – First BB200 appearance since 2012 when it returned briefly and reached #58.
Queens Of The Stone Age, Songs For The Deaf – #18 CS – Had only one previous chart week and that was at #1 in 2014. Still has only the one week on Catalog chart.
Meat Loaf, Bat Out Of Hell – #33 CS – This 1978 classic has yet to return to the top 200 albums in Catalog status, but makes its first chart appearance since 2015.
Bing Crosby, Merry Christmas – #45 CS – Last charted in 1996. The original version (probably not identical) reached #1 in the very first year of the Billboard album chart, 1945.

CATALOG NOTES – Parenthetical numbers are weeks in the top 10 followed by 2019 weeks in the top 10:
On Catalog Sales (CS): It’s Christmas, so naturally we have four albums entering the top 10 which include no Christmas albums. These were by Prince & The Revolution, Steve Miller Band, Frank Sinatra (Icon: Frank Sinatra) and KISS, and all have been mentioned above… Sinatra’s album is a top 10 debut; the others enter the top 10 for the first time in 2019, except Steve Miller Band for which this is their second top 10 week of 2019 (but a new high at #8)… The top three albums on this week’s chart are also not holiday related, with Vince Guaraldi Trio’s A Charlie Brown Christmas heading the Christmas charge at #4, down two spots… Queen’s Greatest Hits I II & III: The Platinum Collection leaves the chart for the first time in 63 weeks, thus ending a 63 week span during which Queen had multiple catalog albums on the chart. At the same time, though, their Greatest Hits reaches 60 straight weeks in the top 10, closing in on the record of 86 straight top 10 weeks for the Grease soundtrackABBA’s Gold – Greatest Hits is also a chart casualty, dropping out for the first time this year after a 48 week run.
On Catalog/BB200: Among four top 10 re-entries on Catalog, there are three Christmas albums: Frank Sinatra’s Ultimate Christmas (6/2) at #8, Bing Crosby’s The Best Of Bing Crosby: 20CMTCC (4/1) at #9, and A Christmas Gift For You From Phil Spector (3/2) at #10… Guardians Of The Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1 (19/1) crashes back onto the Catalog chart at #5 and BB200 at #30… Creedence Clearwater Revival’s Chronicle (148/36) leaves the top 10 after 32 straight weeks in the top 10, a record for that album. This leaves Queen’s Greatest Hits with the longest active top 10 run at 18 weeks… Lizzo’s Coconut Oil (EP) leaves the top 10 after a 13 week run… Christmas albums returning to the chart (besides those already listed above) include selections from Gene Autry, Perry Como, Andy Williams, Burl Ives, Kelly Clarkson, Bing Crosby (Christmas Classics) and Dean Martin… Catalog chart dropouts this week include nine albums with runs of 10 weeks or more: SZA’s Ctrl, Michael Jackson’s The Essential Michael Jackson and Ed Sheeran’s x (47 weeks each); NF’s Perception (34); H.E.R.’s H.E.R. (32); Sam Smith’s In The Lonely Hour (18); Frank Ocean’s Blonde (14); Travis Scott’s Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight (13) and Bryson Tiller’s T R A P S O U L (11)… A total of 89 Catalog albums appear on the BB200 this week, up 12 from last week and matching a record set in the first week of 2019. The top 50 of these 89 albums (corresponding to the Catalog chart) include 17 Christmas albums, but strangely, the other 39 include only two Christmas albums: Josh Groban’s Noel (#165) and The Carpenters’ Christmas Portrait (#199)… Eminem’s Curtain Call: The Hits drops out after 153 straight weeks on the BB200… YoungBoy Never Broke Again’s Until Death Call My Name drops from the BB200 after an 82-week run, including five weeks in Catalog status… Five Finger Death Punch’s A Decade Of Destruction leaves the BB200 after 21 straight weeks… Kanye West’s The Life Of Pablo departs after a 12-week run.

TOP CATALOG ALBUMS WITH NO TOP 10 WEEKS IN 2019 / NO TOP 10 WEEKS EVER – Numbers in parentheses are overall chart weeks, overall top 10 weeks, weeks on chart in 2019, overall peak position, 2019 peak position, current position. If the top album with no 2019 top 10 weeks is the same as the album with no top 10 weeks overall, only one is shown:
