Do these figures include download sales?

^ Nope. ORICON still refuses to add digital sales onto any of their charts.

    Wonder why that is?
That makes it real tough to determine what the sales really are for some of the artists on the chart.
Even Van Halen for example. They did fairly well there.
If they had a significant amount of download sales they must be pretty close to gold record status.

Japan is an odd case, IMO. For a country that's so often at the forefront of technological advancement, they are very reticent when it comes to implementing new rules such as these.

Anyway, I wouldn't expect too much... in 2010 digital album sales made up less than or around 10% of all album sales. The figure may have improved, but it's nowhere near what it is in the US or the UK...

Still, I would LOVE for them to be added. However small, sales are sales, and I have a feeling some albums would benefit A LOT.

^ Those download sales figures are VERY interesting!

Over 3 million for Che'Nelle... yet she's only certified for about a third of that, if even as much.

Just goes to show that having to just rely on certification can cause you to have a completely wrong picture of the industry. I'm sure quite a few songs sold a lot more copies than we would guess from their lack of certs, or the few measly Gold certs they do get.

    AKB's video sales are insane!

(Although it should be noted that Arashi's latest DVD alone sold 632k in the first week...)

It's still annoying that Japanese digital sales are kept so secretive, especially considering the fact that Japan is the second biggest music market in the world. If Gaon in Korea feel proud of displaying weekly digital sales, then so should RIAJ (Even though digital sales aren't as high as in the mid-2000's).

How much did Namie Amuro's "Love Story" sell last year?

It's certified 3 x Platinum (750,000+) for ringtone sales and 2 x Platinum (500,000) for full song downloads. No way those are ALL her sales though. These certifications are slow, cumbersome and highly annoying.

But yeah, sales are still decreasing, but full song sales are still higher than they were in the heyday of 2005 and 2006 when it wasn't unlikely for a song to be 2 x million or more in ringtones but only Gold in full songs, where these days it's more equal.

Even if the market has shrunk, however, sales should still be substantial!

Domo arigato, Nackar. "Love Story" is probably just under or around the 2 million mark in all three combined formats (Full Song, Ringtone, and PC).
