Btw Dane, how much they charge the price for each metallica CD? I read in other forum, AC/DC reduced the price(sold at $8.99-10.99), and it help their catalogue sold very well after 2003.
I don't live in the US, so I might not be the right person to ask.

But I see that Amazon.com does indeed have the regular AC/DC albums available between $8.49 - 10.99. Maybe Amazon have been forced to lower their prices too because Wal-Mart is running an AC/DC campaign at the moment. They have most titles at either $7 or $9. "Back In Black" is $9.72 though. (who wouldn't want all of them then )

At Amazon.com you can also get "Metallica" for $8.99 and AJFA for $9.99, but KEA, MOP and RTL are all at $12.99. :-?
("Death Magnetic" is at $9.99 too btw)

I check metallica sales in europe, but certification date is very old, I don't know either the sales is low or the lazyness of record company.

Some resources told Black album is sold 22 M worldwide, is that true?in 1996 billboard says that the album sold 5 M outside USA, so if we combine with the US sales,15 M, 22 M seems reasonable.
But I don't know, maybe somebody could help with this data?
Too bad that we couldn't use IFPI report for europe sales, I am sure that black sold at least the same level as load (2 M), maybe more considering the album reputation.

what makes me questioning is Reload, somesource said sold 12 M worldwide,I don't know how this could be possible. It could be hoax, but still I am confused, why Reload?Load would be make sense, 5 M USA, 2 M Europe, plus 5 million from the rest of the world, although I couldn't imagine from where.

Yes, that is a problem for just about any artist. We might be frustrated that US certs are sometimes behind, but in the rest of the world it's really much, much worse.

Edu have done a great job trying to gather confirmed information on the biggest selling albums (incl. "The Black Album"):

Edu is missing information from the Scandinavian countries, where Metallica is huge (here in Denmark they're considered half-Danish because of Lars Ulrich), also the certs from the UK, Germany, France, Canada and others are very old.

        I'd say 22M worldwide is a minimum!

I've got this info from metalsludgescan

              1st week Metallica "S & M" 471,126
              2nd week Metalica "S&M" 202,345
              3rd week Metallica "S&M" 252,757

in mid 2000, S&M still sold 130 K,I think it's quite steady, and what's surprised me, at that time 100 K sold/week is below top 10 in Billboard 200, compared to now, it could be in top 5 or 3,market power is so decline

St Anger sold 418000 in 1st week, and 1,2 M at the end of July, with 37 K sold, it's decline very fast

Now, take a look at Death Magnetic
              1st week 490,000
              2nd week 337,000
              3rd week 120,000 (estimation)

Those three album has almost similar, first three week total sold, arround 900 K, but S&M and St Anger has difference story after that.

              How about Death Magnetic?

How come 30 million in Europe is bad?. That´s a huge mark for Led Zeppelin.

Considering their reputation in US, that's low.especially because their come from europe. Dire strait sold more than 50 M, in europe.

Yes, but that´s the same for most acts. Except for The Beatles and Michael Jackson, most acts had strong markets and other ones where they weren´t that big when compared. For instance, look at Elvis Presley and comparr his USA sales to the ones achieved in mainland Europe. Or Queen that were mega huge in Europe, while in USA their popularity wasn´t that big compared to other parts.

                      Look at this list :
All Time Best Selling Act In Europe

                      Rank // Year 1rst Album/Last Album / Artist / Total sales
                      1 // 1963 1970 Beatles - 92,500,000
                      2 // 1973 1995 Queen - 80,050,000
                      3 // 1983 2005 Madonna - 73,040,000
                      4 // 1979 2001 Michael Jackson - 70,200,000
                      5 // 1967 1994 Pink Floyd - 69,900,000
                      6 // 1980 2004 U2 - 59,300,000
                      7 // 1980 2004 Phil Collins - 55,200,000
                      8 // 1964 2005 Rolling Stones - 53,800,000
                      9 // 1969 2006 Elton John - 52,600,000
                      10 // 1973 1982 ABBA - 52,300,000
                      10 // 1978 1991 Dire Straits - 52,300,000
                      12 // 1990 2003 Celine Dion - 50,900,000

If an artist origin from europe, particulary UK and they reach big success in US,mostly in europe there are big too.Example Pink Floyd, U2,Elton John, Rolling Stones. But You can't think the opposite,If an artist is best selling in europe, there is no guarante that you will success in US,example queen and Dire Strait.
Elvis is USA, his origin, see the different?so does garth brooke.

Led Zeppelin is anomaly, with their massive sales in US, of course we would think that they have the same power in europe, their homeland. But according to that list,They didn't.

MJ have a very good work here, to me the sales number is reasonable, not to high or to low.
But I wonder how could he collect all the data?

All figures are my estimates. I used certifications, sales data and chart runs. I have the chance of noting easily undercertified albums in each country since I looked for runs/certifications of almost all artists, which is more than useful to estimate properly all albums. I last updated those figures about 1 year ago, which isn't irrevelant when it is about such a catalog seller as Metallica. They sold loads of copies in Finland last year for example.

                                        Certifed 1xp by the RIAA.

Metallica on the Catalog chart is still at 14xp.

It's doubtful they will re-certify any albums.
