Just found out that PHYSICAL GRAFFITI has sold 56,730 copies in the UK this year, it's best sales year almost definitely since 1975 (year of release).

This can be surely be down to HMV, Woolworths etc selling it for 5 and 6, the cheapest it has ever been priced in the UK.

    [quote="zeus555"]Hello,
Only ABBA and Led Zeppelin had 8 Number 1 UK albums in a row.

In the end, ABBA had 9, when 'Gold' made Number 1 in 1992. (And again in 1999)

Led Zep has 9 #1's as well. The DVD hit the top of the charts in 2003.

Yeah but thats #1 in the Music DVD chart, so it is not included in the Album chart. Still 8 #1 Albums i'm afraid.

    US Led Zeppelin Certifications

A number of these are now well overdue

Early Days/Latter Days - 2CD. Has now sold well over 1m so should be Double Platinum as a 2CD set.

How the West Was Won - 3CD. Has sold well over the 667,000 needed for a Double Platinum certification as a 3CD set.

Remasters - 3CD. Sales very likely over 1 million now so should be Triple Platinum.

Just curious seems the self-titled DVD is undercertified(july2003),6 weeks after it was released.
My hunch is the dvd is hitting the double diamond status in US just like it did in Canada.Transalation at least 1,000,000 units shipped, being a two disc package that would be 2,000,000 units.

The 2 CD copy was sold primarily outside of North America at the same time that the 4 CD box set was issued.
The release was felt to be necessary as it was believed a 4 CD Package would not sell well outside of North America

The 3 CD set(which includes a disc containing interviews) was marketed in North Ameria first via television infomercial then through retailers. I have 3 CD package myself
I know the 2CD package is only available in Canada as an import and I am sure the same applies to the USA

Well done for clearing that up Classicrock.

Yes I got the 3CD version - good interview disc.

The 2CD was released outside the US in 1990. You were right about the box set not selling so well in the rest of the world. In the US it is the biggest selling box set ever (of 4CD's or more) shipping over 2,750,000 copies.

Finally Remasters got released in the US in 1992 and sold via Television. That was a big marketing campaign and sales must have been huge. Officially the album has only shipped 667,000 copies. Seems way too low. The Early Days/Latter Days 2CD set (with less tracks!) has shifted over 1 million in just a few years with very little promotion.

Even if we had a soundscan figure for remasters it wouldn't be that helpful as the big sales were via that mail-order campaign and probably outside of soundscan in 1992.

I don't think the DVD has sold 1 million just yet. There was a website that gave regular updates on it's sales. The last of these was October 2004 when it had reached 702,000. Sales had been slowing down a lot so perhaps around 800,000 by now. The biggest selling CD of it's kind. I have a list of the biggest selling DVD's of 2 or more Discs at

    Hello,
I do not own any Led Zeppelin Albums, but I have heard several of their Tracks on the Radio over the Decades.

When they met ABBA, in the late 1970's - to record at ABBA's Polar Studios, both Acts said that they mutually respected each other.

Because ABBA were Experts at Pop, & Led Zeppelin were Experts at Rock.

I do wish they had all Recorded a Single together!

It could have been called 'Love Everyone (But Kill The Rich!)', or something.

It could have been a 1979 Christmas Number 1.

    Colin

If anyone could provide more or less complete chart histories of Zep albums in any other countries(Germany,Italy,France,Canada etc),it would be appreciated. The swedish and finish chart info, for example,I think is too incomplete to post yet.

Funny, I am having diffculites with the offical Canadian chart info on Zep even though i know they are impressive here(many number 1 albums as i recall).

Just a side note: Did not realize how big Zep 2 was in Europe until this thread came along. The chart run on this album was impressive, must be way undercertified there. Even Zep 3 chart run in some countries was impressive.

Yeah LED ZEP II had a fantastic run especially in the UK. 69/70 were the years that hard rock really kicked off in the UK, great runs from Deep Purple in Rock, Black Sabbath Paranoid etc.

Found this info below regarding UK certification of II on sale at eil.com, as it is for sales of more than 900,000 it could easily be as high as 1,199,999. I don't know when the award is from, as there is no mention of Led Zep II being certified on the BPI website (due to pre 73 ruling?) I think it is from mid 90's, so II has sold about 200,000-250,000 since then and maybe eligable for 4x platinum by now, which I'd imagine to be true.

LED ZEPPELIN Led Zeppelin II (Official UK BPI Certified triple platinum CD award presented to East West Records for sales in the UK of more than 900,000 copies of the 1969 album, superb black background with silver mount highlighting 3 CD's and the sleeve artwork above silver dedication plaque, framed and glazed. Size - 25" x 16". A truly stunning item!) ** Complete With Certificate Of Authenticity **.

With regards to this Pre 1973 ruling in UK,does that mean sales of Zep 1V prior to 1973 were not accounted for? I think the 5times platinum is on on the "low" side for group of that stature?Or maybe the Remasters,Early/Latter Days or just Early days by itself are just cannabalizing sales?

I'm not too sure about the LED ZEP IV 2004 5* platinum certification, I mean the BPI says that it only certifies albums from 1973 onwards, so how could LED ZEP IV be eligible? Or on the other hand, are these, possibly only sales of the album from 1973 onwards, if so it would easily have passed 2M sales.

Having said that Led Zeppelin are not that huge a band in the UK as they are in the states or Canada. Don't get me wrong the are still very popular but nowhere near as popular as Queen, The Beatles, even Oasis have sold a lot more albums in the UK than Led Zep.

Although nearly all of there LP's got to No.1 not many sold that well or stayed at No.1 or in the charts for that long. The only album after IV to hit 2* platinum is Physical Graffiti and that was only a few months ago.
