I just found out this interesting topic from Billboard ending february 1998...

    Sony Music

    Barbra Streisand
Career album sales over 80 million.

    It means worldwide.

I'd be curious to see the Soundscan data on her pre-SS albums, some like Guilty and Broadway Album, I'd assume have sold considerably more than What About Today or ButterFly, but still, that stuff is always interesting to me, especially for an artist with a catalog as huge as Streisand.

Her RIAA total was about 65M back in 1998, with 15-25M overseas.

Her worldwide album sales are 100 million at the most.

have her worldwide sales been that poor? I know she was a megastar in the UK around the time Guilty and Memories (Love Songs in the UK) were released, but at the same time, she was barely on the charts there in the 60's and 70's and success since those two early 80's records have been sporatic, but I once heard that Guilty alone sold 20 million worldwide, so if she's sold 68 million US alone, adding 15 million to that title would mean that the other 40-someodd Barbra albums out there had to fight for the remaining 17 million. I would've thought she'd be more in the 150 million vicinity, but pre-The Way We Were, she was almost entirely a "local star" and then she started doing better worldwide.

The problem in the UK is that until the early/mid 1970's the album "chart" could be as little as a Top 15. A bit different to the billboard 200.

Still, Barbra Streisand has had 5 number one albums and had her first Top 10 album in 1966.

I haven't bothered to post the certifications because they are so useless. Love Songs was nine weeks at number one and 129 weeks on the chart but is still "platinum".

However looking at each chart run and what certifications there are - plus year end sales from 1985 onwards - it seems her UK sales since 1963 have been over 5 million at least. Could be considerably more but there is simply no way of knowing.

I think the real answer is somewhere between the two.

For the USA, starting with 67.75 definitely shipped, if you go through the whole catalogue with certification dates and chart runs of uncertified albums - plus soundscan data - her complete total of albums sold is around 80 million.

    See

    https://www.ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=&start=0

It must be remembered that not all her releases were on Columbia - for when sony give out "totals".

UK and Canadian sales are over 5 million each.

We will never know sales in Australia/NZ or Europe or Asia or anywhere else. True she didn't start to sell much worldwide until the 1970's - but that still means the past 30 years!

So apart from her 80m in the USA which is 37% of the market, rest of the world album sales are likely 40 to 60 million.

This would give all time worldwide sales of 120 to 140 million. Not the best selling female of all time perhaps, but in the Top 5.

There's no way Barbra sold 120-140 million, which is very close to Madonna's 158.2 million.

And in Japan, she's done poor.

I think the sales evidence on this thread indicatess otherwise. Just sounds like you don't want this to be the case for some reason.

You think she sold 68 million based on certifications, which is in case unbelievable for up to 80 million in total, and also where's the evidence for other 60 million outside of US?

You also think 5 million sales for UK, and also 5 million sales for Canada, but I could only get 2.35 million for Canada based on certifications only, and 5 million sales for Canada in total which is a joke. Where's other 50 million according to your case?

I don't think she sold 68m through certifications, she did - simple.

If an album passed the 500,000 mark 40 years ago and has always been on catalogue, it is logical to assume it may have reached 700,000 or 800,000 by now. If an album charted well and is not certified, it is reasonable to assume it has sold 200,000 or 300,000.

If an album was certified at 1m 30 years ago it could have sold up to 1,950,000 but still only have a platinum shipment.

In Canada not all her albums are certified. Her biggest (non-compilation) chart success was Guilty and this hasn't been certified. The situation in the UK is similarly patchy.

We know from end of year UK sales that see sold somewhere between 2 and 3 million albums since 1985. It is no unreasonable to assume that from 1963 to 1984 - a period that includes number one albums that charted for over a year (Star is Born) - a year and a half (Guilty) and two and a half years (Love Songs), that 5m is a minmum UK sale from 1963 until now.

I don't need to find another 50m. The range I suggest is 120 to 140 million total. So in countries outside the US/UK/Canada, she has sold between 30m and 50m.

For any top artist we can only give a range of worldwide sales showing a minimum possible and a maximum possible.

I'm not a fan of most of these artists including Barbra Streisand. I just deal with the figures we have. It's interesting, particularly on such a large catalogue. You really don't seem to like Barbra Streisand for some reason though.

out of curiosity, what caused My Name Is Barbra, Two... to make the UK top 10 while none of her other 60's albums sold well?

From the looks of it, until the mid-1970's, she was predominantly a US artist only and then around the time of A Star Is Born, she started having actual chart success elsewhere.

Second Hand Rose was a hit single off the album - reached No. 14 and charted for 13 weeks.

As I said above, in the 1960'S the UK album chart could be as little as a Top 15, so many artists albums missed out on a chart placing.

Nelson's Chart Postings are very interesting (thanks Nelson). For some countries there isn't always chart info for the 1960's. Certainly not the proper charts we are used to in most countries today.

So I think there was a little sales activity around the world in the 1960's - the single "People" - Funny Girl soundtrack and so on.

But you are right of course in saying that things really took off outside USA/Canada in 1974 with The Way We Were and then a string of albums (and films) - A Star is Born and so on, peaking with Guilty in 1980. So she's been an "international" Star for around 30 years.

How do you find my estimate of 120 to 140m worldwide sales?

Guilty was released in 1980 and went on to become Barbra Streisand's biggest selling album to date. Written and produced by Barry Gibb, the album went on to sell over 20 million units worldwide and was a seminal album for women everywhere.
Now, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Guilty Barbra once again teams up with Barry Gibb on this new album Guilty Too.

Barry Gibb has composed 9 new songs for the reunion album (he composed all 9 featured on Guilty), and duets with Streisand on 2 tracks. The album features a song written for Guilty, but never recorded before now called Letting Go. The emotional and stunning vocal is a centrepiece of the album.

Another track, (Our Love) Don't Throw It All Away was originally recorded by Andy Gibb. The Dual Disc version features an in-depth interview with Barbra and Barry filmed as they were recording the album. The Dual Disc has four performances captured on the Barbra Streisand Scoring Stage at Columbia Pictures by famed cinematographer Lazlo Kovacs. The filming was done in the state-of-the-art 24p Hi-Definition format.
