I am interested in trying to determine Paul McCartney's worldwide sales solo, with the Beatles and with the Wings? He has to be the best-selling artist worldwide when considering all of his work, right?

Paul´s work after the Beatles is undercertified everywhere, i´ve got certifications from lot of countries but they are so low in certifications levels.
It´s obvious that if the Beatles are the best sellers round the world if you add Paul´s sales they will be higher than any other artist.

One reason I've not posted this before is that most of the certifications are so old. The total of these certs is 24,000,000.

There has to be one or two titles that could be updated.

    Soundscan total march 1991 to january 2006 - 7,200,000

The DVD, Back in the USA has scanned 291,000.

Quite right Miguel. The certifications everywhere seem to be either really old - or there's no certification at all. Anyway, here are the UK ones.

Many old certifications - or none if pre-1973. Also no multi-platinum for pre-1980 releases as usual. Would bet money that Band on the Run is 600 or 900k.

Anyway, total of these certs is 4,420,000.

From end of year sales charts he has sold over 2m during the years 1984-2004.

Basil, here's a little Soundscan information for you

    link http://www.madonnanation.com/forums/ind ... opic=5999#

    Flaming Pue - 674,000
    Run Devil Run - 232,000
Driving Rain - 400,000.... article is probably in the past month so I doubt any of the titles are more than 1k higher now.

too bad "Wings Greatest" is now out of print, that's a title I think could possibly be a bit higher than 1x. Venus And Mars spent over a year and a half on the charts and was a #1 album, as was Wings At The Speed Of Sound (#1 for 7 or 8 weeks), both should be recertified.

Thanks NothingFails. I might ask Hanboo if he has a soundscan total.

Canadian certs are patchy (and old) - the "total" is 1,250,000. They did certify his first 3 albums, though, unlike the UK.

Thanks for the information. Frustrating that the certifications are out-of-date or missing though.

Very frustrating. In Canada they didn't certify "Band on the Run" - this is surely a joke. His biggest selling album!

Mind you, they certified various Streisand albums, but not "Guilty" - another joke.

Same with Led Zeppelin and others. The cria is worse than the bpi!

I´ve read somewhere that Wings over America (spent 88 weeks on charts) sold 4 million records, if this is truth it should be 12 platinum

No need to ask, here is his SS total: 6.7 million.
It includes most of the Wings albums, but not all (e.g. "Back to the egg" is missing).
Biggest seller is "Wingspan", which moved about 1,027,000 copies.

It's possible that SS keeps tab of a separate Wings section, I'll try to get hold of that.

I think Band on the run is his best seller, i ´ve read in Peter Brown´s book about The Beatles that the album sold 6M round the world, also i´ve a book (spanish one) that said that in 1975 Paul recieved an award for sales of 500.000 records in England of Band on the run.
But the real sales we have are:

    Certifications are
    USA 3.000.000
    UK 300.000
    France 100.000

    Sales known
    Japan 118.000 + 7000(25th anniversary)

Thank you Hanboo. It's like the 2Pac situation - same artist under different names. Is it a similar problem with John Lennon - Plastic One Band - John & Yoko and so on?

Wingspan definately should be certified double-platinum then.

One problem is that currently over half the McCartney collection is out of print domestically, even though imports are easily found, this includes smash albums like London Town, Venus & Mars and At The Speed Of Sound. I dunno if EMI is holding out to reissue them one of these days or what, but a lot of the catalog is now deleted in America.

Do you have Soundscan numbers for either Band On The Run or Tug Of War? Those are my fave albums of his that are still available in the US domestically

that one's a REAL shocker. Despite "Say Say Say" being a #1 in the US, Pipes Of Peace was McCartney's lowest selling album period up to that point in 1983, yet in the UK, it outsold Tug Of War, Back To The Egg and London Town, all of which are regarded as far superior albums.

The Pipes of Peace came out in November and the title track was a UK Number One over Christmas. This single wasn't even released in the US.

Paul's UK and US singles were often different and when they were the same their chart performances could very widely - Mull of Kintyre for instance, the Americans really didn't like that one (nor did I).

Hanboo has provided a whole bunch of soundscan data which I've now put on the list of US album sales. Third Post, Page One.

    Hi and welcome Pajorige.

You're in luck. Hanboo has recently posted soundscan figures for Paul and I've just added them here - see Third Post on this page.

Is it true that Mull Of Kintyre is still the best selling single in the UK who's sales have not been boosted by an event of some kind? For example, Elton's Candle In The Wind 1997 disc obviously sold well because of Princess Di's sad death, Bohemian Rapsody was a hit all over again in 1991 because of Mercury's sad passing, and Band Aid 1984 was a big hit because of the Ethopia famine.

I reckon Mull of Kintyre could be construed as the UK's biggest selling single in terms of its sales not being boosted by other events - the genuine UK number one, if you like!!
They did not sell many, but they were one of the best - God save the Kinks!

"Mull of Kintyre" was the best selling in UK for 7 years...1977/1984.
The "Band aid" broke the record.
I heard that "Mull" was now the 4th all time best selling single in UK...
More than 2.5 millions sales if i'm correct.
