That used to really irritate me when I missed something. They always said the charts were published in the Sunday World but they didn't carry them in the NI edition. Didn't stop me going into the nearest newsagent to check in case they had started printing it every time it happened though!

BTW I've discovere a box of blank tapes from the first half of the 90s - there's quite a few and its all stuff taped off the radio. Hopefully I'll get a chance to search through some of them at the weekend and who knows, maybe even find some of the missing countdowns!

Ne 28 En Vogue - My Lovin'
    25 29 Def Leppard - Let's Get Rocked
    Ne 30 Shakespear's Sister - I Don't Care

The above chart was announced on-air on 24th May. The chart
announced on the show on 31st May was the first "official" chart
compiled by Gallup. When counting down the Gallup chart the last weeks
position figures used didn't match those announced on 24th May so I
presume they were taking them from a test chart. The chart I am posting
uses the on-air positions from 24th May and where appropriate I have
included the test chart positions in brackets after the song titles. To
explain I'll give you the first Gallup Top 3.

    06 01 Guns n Roses - Knockin' On Heavens Door (02)
    02 02 Linda Martin - Why Me? (01)
    Ne 03 Kriss Kross - Jump (13)

Ignoring the test chart Guns n Roses climbed from 6 (on-air 24th May) to
1 (on-air 31st May) though they were announced as climbing 1 place to
number 1. Linda Martin was the real loser in this as on both on-air
countdowns she was at number 2 - had the 24th May test chart been for
real she would have actually had a number 1. On-air Kriss Kross
appeared to enter at 3 on the 31st May though they had actually entered
at 13 on the test chart and were announced as climbing 10 places on 31st
    May

Linda Martin is listed as reaching number one on the irishcharts website. The date that she reached number one is 18/5/92 (a Monday) according to the searchlist of number ones. The dates for this list don't seem to match the dates that records are listed as entering the charts. For example Kris Kross is listed as entering on 21/5/92 (a Thursday). Linda Martin entered on 9/5/92 (a Saturday) it says. Obviously with the changeover the chart dates changed to a Thursday from a Saturday. Another example Ugly Kid Joe entered on 14/5/92 (a Thursday and the first one listed) so this must be the first Gallup chart used - the chart that Shakyfan has posted as 25/5/92 must not be recognised by the website as the 14/5/92 on the website corresponds to 25/5/92 in Shakyfan's dates and it's the "Linda Martin" chart. After saying all this, all of the number ones from that period are listed as reaching the top on Monday!!! Bizarre eh?

I have realised now what I was doing - the show switched from Sunday to Saturday somewhere around September 1991 but the way my spreadsheet is set up it adds on a week for each new column and I forgot to amend it at the relevant point. I only realised when I was typing up the charts for the end of May 92.
The first Saturday chart show was actually on Saturday 1st June 1991 (12 noon - 2pm) - although I'm not sure at exactly what point the format changed, so that the album chart was featured in the first hour and the singles only in the second hour. Maybe this change is what happened "somewhere around September 1991" - I'm fairly certain that by the end of that month I was only tuning in from 1pm for the singles chart.

The show had been in several different time slots on Sunday since it moved to the newly-started Radio 2 on 1st June 1979, airing from 2pm to 4pm. I'm not sure when it shifted to 1pm-3pm, but it was in that slot by 1987, and remained there until Sunday 23rd October 1988, from which date its new time was 1.30pm - 3.30pm.

It returned to 1pm - 3pm from Sunday 11th June 1989, but only for fourteen weeks, going back to 1.30pm - 3.30pm from Sunday 17th September 1989 and for a further year. Strangely, it was back to 1pm - 3pm for one week only on Sunday 16th September 1990, then it moved to 9.30am - 11.30am from Sunday 23rd 1990 until the end of May 1991.

Something I had completely forgotten until today was that for at least two years, from May 1988 and for sponsorship reasons, the programme was renamed "The Pepsi Chart Show".

Incidentally, how long did it take for the coverage of the album chart to be dropped and for the full two hours to be restored to the singles?

    22 to 30 unknown!
The Forget Me Nots spent 2 weeks on the chart and peaked at #24. The second week is most likely the week of July 7th.

Also INCOGNITO featuring JOCELYN BROWN entered the week of July 7th and spent 2 weeks on the chart peaking at #25.

I'll be posting the next charts later.

BTW Although there is a gap in my files over the last few months of 1990 I believe the album chart countdowns began in September of that year as the earliest sheets I have after that - from November - have both singles and albums. This wasn't the first time the album chart was broadcast - I remember listening to a show around 1988/89 which counted down the Top 30 on a Sunday evening - possibly presented by one of the people who used to stand in for Larry on the singles chart show.

Oh and I believe the reason for the changes on Sundays between 1 and 1:30 was because they had to allow for the Beatbox show which was a simulcast with RTE2 TV.

    1st February 1993

I need some clarification on this one. The LW column is based on
what I have on the previous weeks chart but there are a couple of lower
positions where my written copy shows something different. Those
affected are listed at the end

01 01 Chris Moore - Life Without You
    03 02 2 Unlimited - No Limit
02 03 Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You
    04 04 Snap - Exterminate
    05 05 Faith No More - I'm Easy
    11 06 Sister Sledge - We Are Family '93
    25 07 Duran Duran - Ordinary World
    Ne 08 Undercover - I Wanna Stay With U
    09 09 Arrested Development - Mr Wendal
    06 10 Frank & Walters - After All

07 11 Take That - Could It Be Magic?
Ne 12 Usura - Open Your Mind
13 13 West End ft Sybil - Love I Lost
08 14 Michael Jackson - Heal The World
18 15 Bon Jovi - Bed of Roses
    10 16 Sultans of Ping FC - U Talk 2 Much
    12 17 SOUL System - Lovely Day
30 18 En Vogue - Give It Up
    22 19 Peter Gabriel - Steam
    14 20 Prodigy - Out of Space

    15 21 Charles & Eddie - Would I Lie To You?
    27 22 Cult - She Sells Sanctuary
Re 23 Heights - How Do You Talk To An Angel
Ne 24 Def Leppard - Heaven Is
    20 25 Shamen - Phorever People
    19 26 Lemonheads - Mrs Robinson
    16 27 Boney M - Megamix
Ne 28 Paul McCartney - Hope of Deliverance
    Ne 29 Leila K - Open Sesame
    Ne 30 Lulu - Independence

    Discrepancies

23 The Heights - How Do You Talk To An Angel.

Whoever was doing the chart rundown that week seems to have said that it
climbed 9 places. Can any of you confirm this or have I just written it
    down wrong?

28 Paul McCartney - Hope of Deliverance
    29 Leila K - Open Sesame

I have written these down as climbing 2 places (Paul McCartney) and 1
place (Leila K) - one of these is obviously wrong but they both seem to
    be new entries.

A couple of minor corrections/additions for 1992/93. The Manic Street Preachers hit from September 1992 is actually a double-a side with Fatima Mansions version of "Everything I Do (I Do It For You)"

From October 1992 Simple Minds "Love Song" was a double-a side with "Alive And Kicking"

    On 25th January 1993
Paul McCartney with "Hope Of Deliverance" was #31
The Beloved were #36 with "Sweet Harmony"
Leila K was #39 with "Open Sesame"
and the Heights were #41 with "How Do You Talk To An Angel"

Alas they're the only positions outside the top 30 that I have for the whole of 1993

Your spreadsheet may be doing strange things with dates again.......!

Was the Chris Moore single officially a double A-side? I have "This Time" listed as the title that was played more frequently on the German broadcasts of the Europarade on SR1 (on the first of which, incidentally, I recall that the presenter read out at considerable length details of the tragic circumstances relating to the release of this record, presumably translating from the sleeve notes). And it's also "This Time" that appears on my notes of the Irish charts for this period (source unknown, top tens only) ?

    Bloody Excel!

Now you mention it I'm 99% sure the Chris Moore single was a double a side. I actually have it on casette somewhere so I can check if I ever find the tape. I had it listed as Life Without You as thats the one I heard moe often on 2FM!

yes, it was a double a-side single as life without you / this time. i remember she was a limerick woman that had died and she'd written these two songs and recorded them, and her mother rang the gerry ryan show saying it was her dream to have them released, and the rest as they say is hysteria.

Yep, I can still remember the headlines in the papers that week: Limerick woman knocks Whitney Houston from the top of the charts. And yeah, it was a double A side, but I remember "This Time" as being the one that received most airplay.

I just checked www.irishcharts.ie - I should have thought of doing this earlier! - and, indeed, it is shown there as a double A-side:

Title: THIS TIME / LIFE WITHOUT YOU
    Artist: CHRIS MOORE
    Label: WARNER BROS.
    Date of entry: 21.01.1993
    Highest Placement: 1
    Weeks in the Charts: 10

However, I've just posted another error on the "Fully Searchable" thread, regarding what comes up when you search for the number one during the five weeks in which this single topped the charts.

Without even going there, you can probably guess to which artist this number one is mis-credited.......!

Some possible good news! I was searching for something the other night and discovered a couple of old notebooks and some loose file pages that should have some extra info. A bit of background info...

Back in the late 80s I listened to and followed 4 chart shows - the Radio 1 chart, the rival Network Chart, the Irish chart and a NI chart which was broacast on local commercial station Downtown on Sunday afternoons. Each week I wrote the charts out on loose file pages. In March 1987 for a bit of fun one week I calculated a combined chart using these and a few other charts that were published in various magazines and newspapers. This was done by listing all the songs from those charts on a separate filepage and putting the relevant chart positions in - there was 1 column per chart. I then worked out a points system to find each songs total. This means that in reality I should have 2 copies of each chart from then until the mid 90s when I stopped doing the combined chart. The notebooks I found contain some of the cc worksheets and amongst them are all the charts from July, August, September and October 1990 which I was completely without until now. I'm going to take another look and hopefully I'll be able to find some of the other "missing" charts

I need some clarification on this one. The LW column is based on
what I have on the previous weeks chart but there are a couple of lower
positions where my written copy shows something different. Those
affected are listed at the end

    16 27 Boney M - Megamix
Ne 28 Paul McCartney - Hope of Deliverance
    Ne 29 Leila K - Open Sesame
    Ne 30 Lulu - Independence

    Discrepancies

23 The Heights - How Do You Talk To An Angel.

Whoever was doing the chart rundown that week seems to have said that it
climbed 9 places. Can any of you confirm this or have I just written it
    down wrong?

28 Paul McCartney - Hope of Deliverance
    29 Leila K - Open Sesame

I have written these down as climbing 2 places (Paul McCartney) and 1
place (Leila K) - one of these is obviously wrong but they both seem to
    be new entries.
In case you missed this earlier, Paul McCartney and Leila K were new entries to the top 30 that week but McCartney was #31 the week before and Leila K was #39. The Heights re-entered from #41. The only other position from the previous week that I have is that the Beloved were at #39 and they entered this week at #18. More about that below

Some other amendments for the early part of 1993

The following were all double a-side hits:

"Little Bird/ Love Song For A Vampire" by Annie Lennox
"Mr Wendal/ Revolution" by Arrested Development
"Mrs Robinson/ Being Around" by the Lemonheads
"Yesterdays/ November Rain" by Guns N Roses
"Way In My Brain (Remix)/ Drumbeats" by SL2

On January 11th the #13 should be Boyz II Men "End Of The Road"

En Vogue spent only 1 week on the chart with "Give It Up, Turn It Loose". That was 25th January at #30; for the rest of the chart run that you have for it it should show The Beloved with "Sweet Harmony"

#25 on the 21st of March should be Metallica with "Sad But True"

InXs spent 1 week on the chart with Beautiful Girl. That's the one you have listed as 29th of February, even though it wasn't a leap year in 1993. It was #28 that week. After that, where you have the InXS record listed it should be "She Hits Me" by the Four Of Us

And just to nitpick , The Sultans of Ping FC hit should be spelt "You Talk Too Much"

Oh by the way!! Excel Rocks!!! LOL

Will check everything else out but regarding Sultans of Ping we could both be correct. The front of the CD single has it as "U talk 2 much" though the back cover and CD itself have it your way!

Checked those out and you're right! When typing the spreadsheet up I was using the last week column on the original file page and I had made errors on those! Will correct both posts and spreadsheet later.
