Dane no disrespect here intended, but there is no way Deep Purple are anywhere as big as Led Zeppelin in Europe.

Unfortunately year end charts do not help that much as at that time sales were much lower. For example, made in japan was #6 in austria in 73 but was platinum in 1997 only ... (and it's probably their top catalogue seller with machine head)

Led zeppelin 2 : #4 of 1970 and Gold in 1991 only in austria ...

..just out of curiosity when did Austria start issuing certifications..as I was wondering if it might be around the time the certifications were issued...and if that was the case...was the certifications based on totals sales up to that time or from the year of release...as it would mean it took Zep II that long to reach 20,000 in sales (21 yrs)..I belive Gold in Austria is now 15,000 but stand to be corrected.....Take care

...for example when I look at Switzerland the only certification I see for DP is as follows..and I believe that might be the year certifcations were first issued...and was thinking the same might be for Austria..as the album listed below would be one of the smaller selling of DP`s 18 studio albums , with Joe Lynn Turner doing the vocals...

Artist Title Type Label Award Year

I had originally typed in 25,000 then did a search and came across 20,000 which seemed to be an unusual number...Take care

    That's Ok Cidermaster.
They might not have been bigger than Led Zep in the UK, but I think all these great posts here by gminer and MJ suggests they were bigger in the rest of Europe. Definately in Germany.

..unfortunately I am of the age that I was a teenager in the 70`s and remember very clearly the media using phrases at the time like Purplemania in the UK and Europe...and riots would erupt at Purple concerts in Europe...police were often on hand in full force with water cannons etc....there was a time in the 70`s that Purple and Zep were the two biggest rock bands in the world...one might note the biggest "paid" attendance concert held in the US up to its time was the California Jam...and Purple regularly broke attendance records around the world..and in 1973 Purple was listed as the biggest album selling band for that year...as many will notice that in 1973 Purple had anywhere from 3 to 6 albums in the charts at the same time in pretty well every location that had charts around the world ( in the US there was Machine Head ,Purple Passages (double album, Made in Japan (double album) and Who Do We Think We Are)....Take care
