Let's look at global sales for What's the Story Morning Glory.

    English Speaking Countries
    4,800,000 UK (inc music club)
    4,000,000 USA
    800,000 Canada
    540,000 Australia
    105,000 New Zealand
    320,000? Ireland (guestimate)

    about 10.6m sales

    Europe
    300,000 France
    250, 000 Germany
    50,0000 Netherlands
    25,000 Finland
625,000 from these 4 countries. As they represent about 50% of Mainland Europe's sales about 1.3 m in Mainland Europe.

The IPFI say 6m in Europe - but that would include the massive UK sales.

    Asia/Rest of World
108,000 in Japan. The whole of Asia and therest of the world? 500,000?

    Total 12.4m

Even if this is a bit low i can't see sales of more than 15 million. Outside English speaking countries sales aren't that great.

Most of those figures are very old. In the US, it scanned around 1 million copies since it was certified 4xPlatinum, it is around 5 million now.
The same goes for Europe, it is not hard to point out 1 million sales since the last European award of 6xPlatinum.
About Asia, I'm 100% sure it sold more than 500k in Japan alone.

    MJ Dangerous

The figures may be old but they are official/checkable. Unfortunately, they are all I can go own.

By the way, why do you over-use the quote facility? You replied staright after my post and did so by quoting all my post. The net result is that if you scroll down threads a lot of what you see is repetion of people quoting each other!

Johnnyboy you are not referring to official/checkable figures only, your figures for Ireland, Asia, Mainland Europe and Worldwide are all estimates.

When you say "I can't see sales of more than 15 million" you do not speak about only checkable figures obviously.

In most, 5m in the US for example is checkable data - just check the combo RIAA/Soundscan.

If you want to post only certifications, then always add dates, because they are as meaningfull as the certification itself.

    (What´s the story) Morning glory
ifpi 6 platinum award is from 1997
uk 13 platinum award is fron oct 1997

so in my opinion it must be around 8 million in Europe, another 8 in America (more than five in USA, nearly one in Canada, and the rest in Mexico, Brazil and Argentina) and another 2 million between Asia and Australia.

    MJ Dangerous

I don't mind if you say global sales are 16m....it is one of my Top 3 favourite albums of all time anyway!

By the way, where do you get all your sales information from? Are the figures you quoted above real sales or your estimates? how can you get 'inside knowledge' of sales from so many countries?

On calculating European sales i know how you explained how you adjust your formula for acts such as Oasis.
Howver, UK sales figures are generally, not occassionally, out of step with the rest of Europe. wouldn't it better to exclude the UK from your formula altogether.

Example; the 9 remaining european countries x1.3 for a pan European result + UK sales.

I agree with those Latin American results being rubbish. Often you get these unbelielable sales figures quoted for South America which are just made up!

Just a question for the USA sales isn't 5million a bit too much? or is that a shipment sale?

i mean around 2005-2006 i read that MG had scaned about 3.85m-4m in the usa ?

and for canada 1.2m ? hasn't it shipped 800,000 or is it out of date and is due for another award?

    thanks

Who said they were ? I estimate most of them from certifications + known informations. I already explained it one zillion times in the forum. All figures are based on solid arguments.
You should check infos more carefully, we can contradict your estimates in no time. For example, WTSMG was at 4m in UK+IR by late 1997.
It was certified 6xP in Europe during the year 1997, so even assuming that the award came out at the end of the year (since it was 5xP in July 96, it was certainly over 6m by early/mid 97 already), this means that it sold at least 2m in Europe by 1997. No way it sold 2m by now.
In Canada too, it sold 800k by mid97, it just can't be at 800k 11 years later.

Doves, ALL figures are always about shipment. To think that we are estimating "real sales" is an utopy. WTSMG sold cleary a lot by music clubs. The album sold 2.6 million copies according to Soundscan in 96, in 95 it sold 200k at much (charted 3 months from #70 to #155), so by the end of 96, it sold 2.8 million according to soundscan. Consequently, it sold between 2.5m and 2.6m when it was certified 4xPlatinum in November 1996.

By now, it is at least at 3.7m as far as I remember, so it sold well over 1m copies since it was certified 4xPlatinum. Five million exactly is a conservative estimate.

Who said they were ? I estimate most of them from certifications + known informations.
Thanks for that explanation. We know now that the figures you quote are YOUR estimates. You should say that. People might not have read a thread where you explained this!

i do know that oasis album sales have not been updated for sometime now.the uk sales must be higher than what people are sayin ,i remember way at its peak it had shifted over 3.5 mill copies an since then its been a strong seller an in 2005 the sales went up again by around 200 000,the sales of this album are huge,i know people say you shouldnt listen to noel when he states sales an stuff but he openly admits when an album has undersold.so i think hes tellin the truth when he said around 23 million had been sold,an dont forget this was a huge huge album.

"The album is the first in a new pact between the band's Big Brother imprint and Sony BMG, struck last week. It's the follow-up to 2005's "Don't Believe the Truth," which has sold 201,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan."

In the UK, today's 'Sun' says that Coldplay are
the first UK Act to Top the UK, & USA, Singles &
Albums Charts, in the same Week, since Rod Stewart
in 1971. That The Beatles, (twice in 1964), are
the only other UK Act to manage it - plus Davy
Jones, in 1966, as part of The Monkees. (He was British too).
Only about 7 Acts have managed it over all.

The reason I mention it in an OASIS Thread, is
because 'The Sun' also repeats the old nonsense
that, 'Oasis never made it in the USA'.

It is claimed many times by UK 'Papers - because
none of their Journalists do any research. They just
see that one UK Journalist said it several Years
ago, & then they copy off that - and each other
    - even though their claim has no basis in reality.

    After Glastonbury 2008

"The star has helped Oasis's Wonderwall return to the charts after he mockingly opened his set with the 1995 single, mid-week figures also suggest.

    Huge exposure

Jay-Z chose to cover an Oasis track after Noel Gallagher told the BBC that he was "wrong" for the three-day Somerset festival.

The original version has experienced a huge sales boost, with the single challenging for a place in the Top 100.

What's The Story (Morning Glory), the album it originally appeared on, has seen sales increase of over 200%, while their compilation Stop the Clocks has had a week on week increase of over 140%. "

    THANKS JAY

YOUR WELCOME TO COVER OASIS ANY TIME
