Swings which debuted at #2 there probably sold 5k in the first week.

Like he said, just a fun little game and definitely not an exact science, but it does give a nice sense of proportion. Robbie has been massively popular here.

Your 5k would equal about 100k in the US, so his guess is not that far of from his in a way.

I also definitely think Swings opened quite a bit lower (perhaps even only half as much) than Take The Crown, which is a huge shame but I guess unavoidable, considering how huge Candy was here, and how tiny (almost non-existant on the charts) Go Gentle was. Still hope he does promo.

I've always been dubious about extrapolating sales based on population size alone - especially for a country like the Netherlands, where the music industry has always outperformed reasonable expectations.

Oh yes, I agree. Based solely on population numbers the French and UK markets should be comparable, and the German market the dominant European one, which is obviously not the case.

But as Timmy says, it's just a fun little game. And, IIRC, recent IFPI report showed that the US and Netherlands markets are very comparable where album sales are compared to population figures. Not too sure though.

^ Whoops, looks like I was wrong.

Seems that, comparative to the country's respective sizes, music sales are much lower here than in the US, but performance rights are far more important here. Is that correct, or did I misread the charts?

@Wayne, I am a highschool student from Hong Kong, currently I am working on my extended esssay for IB on the Hong Kong music industry. I realise the type of informations you have posted about netherland and US would be useful if there are the ones about Hong Kong... It is unaffordable for me to order the report from IFPI, I wonder if you have more information about Hong Kong Music industry that can provide to me especially 2012, 2013 and 2014 Thanks

    U.K. sales:

As of 7 March 2015, Madonna is the century's 12th biggest seller, behind Robbie Williams (15,464,202), Coldplay (11,955,164), Westlife (11,871,186), Take That (11,388,271), Michael Buble (10,084,185), Eminem (9,844,245), Rod Stewart (9,353,186), Michael Jackson (9,243,018), The Beatles (8,834,981) and Oasis (7,894,460). Totals include interview albums. It would arguably be as valid to add some Take That sales to Williams' tally, to credit Eminem's D12 duties, to add more than a million to The Beatles tally to arrive at a higher figure for Paul McCartney, and so on. I have not done this, although if an album has a joint credit (Michael Jackson and The Jacksons, Rod Stewart & The Faces being the most obvious examples) full sales have been added. There is no definitive way of doing this and, hey, it's just for fun.

wow sales this century still don't include his debut (1997) and his second album I've been expecting you, both of which have sold well over 2m copies as well.

he single handedly has no flop albums (1997-2013)...

seriously... Rudebox sold half a million copies.. it may be a underperformance.. but it's not a flop.

    even this decade:

    2010 - 717,444 - IAOOC
    2012 - 519,585 - TTC
    2013 - 733,959 - SBW

truly remarkable.. but hey, nothing beats his 6 almost consecutive 2m sellers. Only a live album broke the streak which in itself sold 635k. like wtf.

    Music Week: 19,309,265 albums sold.

Robbie is now under Columbia Records UK (Sony Music UK) for his next album, we'll see how it goes sales-wise and if promo changes.

    1999 - 1,0m - The Ego has Landed
