    Number one twenty-seven years ago: FOR EVERYONE Wind
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    A year ago saw the very first appearance in the breakers of Lana Del Rey with the Chartbuster “Video Games” - now, among twenty-eight hits moving downwards, a six place slide to number 39 in its twelfth month in the top forty means that it is both the fastest faller and the longest laster. However, that same singer is now equally as close again to the top of the chart as the bottom, as “Summertime Sadness” is this month’s Rapid Riser, racing up twenty-six places to number two and becoming her fourth consecutive top five single. Just below that, another of just seven climbers is “She Wolf (Falling To Pieces)”, giving David Guetta a sixth top five hit - and his second featuring Sia. Both of these major movers were strong contenders to become my 199th number one this month - but it’s October’s highest new entry that ultimately advances eight places to pole position for Swedish House Mafia, the instrumental “Greyhound”. And not many more lyrics are to be found on the highest of five new entries, as Klangkarussell arrive at number six with last month’s Chartbuster - “Sonnentanz”. Another chart debut this time comes from Gossip - who, although they have never impressed me with any of their previous (and much more successful) hits, finally enter at 40 with “Move In The Right Direction”. But the other three newcomers are all by acts who have recently topped my chart. Avicii has already followed up “Collide / Fade Into Darkness / Penguin” with a number three hit “Levels”, and Katie Melua has taken “The Bit That I Don’t Get” to number eighteen since “Better Than A Dream” became her first number one - while Fun have already beaten off all challengers twice, with “We Are Young” and “Some Nights”. Could “Carry On” go all the way too? At the moment, it has the furthest to climb, entering only at 37 - with "Silhouettes" three places higher at 34, and "The Walls Of The World" ahead of both, at 25.
    In recent years, Malcolm McLaren, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and Donna Summer have all occupied the bottom four (or more) positions in my top forty breakers simultaneously - and this month Kylie Minogue does likewise. Thankfully, however, it’s not because she has died - in contrast, she celebrates twenty-five years in the music business by re-recording some of her greatest successes. Four of those, all former top ten hits in my chart, could now be on the way there again - “All The Lovers”, “Better The Devil You Know”, “Locomotion” and “Where The Wild Roses Grow”. Just above them is one of only two acts making their first appearance in the breakers this time - Cedric Gervais, with the recent quirky minor UK hit about “Molly” - as the majority of the nine new potential future successes of this month are much more familiar names. Django Django reached number two in September with “Default”, and now follow that up with “Hail Bop” - while, with three breakers already, Train add another track from their latest album, the upcoming single “Bruises”. This has nothing except the title in common with my former number one from Chairlift - and, while we’re on the subject of number ones..... well, both Carly Rae Jepsen and Owl City have been there in the UK and elsewhere - and now they’re together on “Good Time”. So have the Pet Shop Boys - many, many times over, although their one and only number one in my chart was “Losing My Mind”, the B-side of their single “Jealousy”. Their latest offering, “Leaving”, just missed the top forty in the UK, but could give them their nineteenth hit in my chart. The German brothers Paul and Fritz Kalkbrenner also went to number one in my top forty with “Sky And Sand”, which has since become the most-charted single ever in their homeland. The main instrumentalist, Paul, has followed this up with “Azure” and “Gutes Nitzwerk”, and could still be about to make “Das Gezabel” his fourth success, while the vocalist Fritz now debuts in the breakers with solo single “Get A Life”. Lana Del Rey also topped my chart with “Video Games”, and her new breaker this month is “Blue Velvet” - while, although Jessie Ware has already toppled four places with “Wildest Moments” after crashing straight in at the top last time, a further single from her album “Devotion” is the second strongest new breaker - “Night Light”.
    Several of the artists mentioned so far weren’t even born back in 1978, when the song “Dancing In The City” was a number one hit in Australia. It also reached the top three in the UK for its writers and performers, the pop/rock duo Marshall/Hain, consisting (logically enough) of keyboard player Julian Marshall and bass player/vocalist Kit Hain. They have long since parted company - the former becoming a member of the Flying Lizards, and the latter, now 55, concentrating more on songwriting, for an varied and impressive range of other acts. And it’s one of her more recent compositions that now becomes the new Chartbuster - sung by a 21-year-old former “Idool 2011” contestant who had major chart success in her homeland, Belgium, with the cover version of Robyn’s track “Dancing On My Own” she had sung on that reality show. Further hits have followed for her there - and my Record of the Month for November 2012 is the latest single from “Flamingo”, the debut album by Kato Callebaut - “Suits You Well”.
    Great top 4 & nice new entries for Fun and Gossip.
    I also like the retro number ones from Alizée and Dutch Eurodance group 2 Brothers On the 4th Floor (I remember their other big single, "Never Alone", as well).
    Your Top4 is absolutely flawless, especially your current #1. Personally, I think that "Greyhound" is the best single by Swedish House Mafia and it will make a re-entry in my chart as well, since I bought ther album "Until Now".
    However, I'm also glad to see "Some Nights", "Summertime Sadness" being so high on your chart and it's amazing that "Girl Gone Wild" is on your chart as well!
    Thanks for the comments - especially those that provided inspiration for a couple of short bonus features this month!
    Both of these acts are among my favourites of all time (number 37 and number 9 respectively in my top 100 artists at the moment), but I haven't previously done separate features on either of them. So let's rectify that!
    Coming up later this month, a similar (but longer!) feature covering the Pet Shop Boys.....and, right now, a look back at all nine successes in my chart, plus three other singles I bought, by the group who had some big hits in their homeland and elsewhere two decades ago:
    I always thought that the "2 Brothers On The 4th Floor" were a two hit wonder but according to Wikipedia they had 9 top 10 singles in the Netherlands.
    Wikipedia actually under-rates them, if that's what it says - even more incredibly, they had eleven top ten hits in their homeland!
    From my list above, "Heaven Is Here" was the only flop, grinding to a halt at number five in the Tipparade - but the other eleven all reached the top ten in the Netherlands. "Dreams" was the only number one, but "Never Alone" stayed in the chart the longest (19 weeks), peaking at number two.
    You're right, the English version of the Wikipedia article lists 9 Dutch top 10 singles but the Dutch version has 11 top 10 hits. I had no idea that they were that successful in their home country.
    Well, here it is now! While it was a little difficult to spread out all the 2 Brothers on the 4th Floor tracks over a full hour (I needed to include several extended versions), today's trip back in time was much easier. All the Pet Shop Boys songs I have ever liked fitted snugly into exactly two hours - largely because there are thirty of them, and most are pretty close to four minutes in length!
    In terms of their performance in my chart and breakers over the years, these can be broken down as follows:
    - eighteen tracks reached my monthly top forty - a total only ever beaten by Madonna, Brendan Shine, Nicole and BZN
    - one track also counts as a hit, because it peaked at number 41 during the period in which my chart was a top fifty
    - eight have ground to a halt in the breakers, falling short of a chart placing (but often staying around much longer than some of the hits)
    - one is "assumed" to have reached a peak below the chart (70) because, although I bought it at the time, it didn't chart....and there wasn't any extended chart or breakers to indicate how close it actually got!
    - one more recent release is included despite not even reaching the breakers, and therefore not achieving a peak position as low as 125.
    - and, of course, the reason for this celebration is the arrival of their latest breaker from 2012 - this month's number 112, and towards the bottom of this list. It will almost certainly improve on that peak in the months ahead!
    Overall, the duo have had mixed fortunes in my charts over the years - sometimes, even their bigger successes in the UK and elsewhere haven't impressed me at all. They tended to perform best in the 1990s - from which there are fourteen tracks (all but one a hit) and least well in the current century, when only two breakers out of ten have so far gone on to enter the top forty. That leaves just six tracks from the 1980s - including two that are in my top hundred of all time. They're both from the same year, and probably not at all difficult to guess! Here, then, is the full countdown.....
    "It's A Sin" and "Always On My Mind" are also my two favourite PSB songs. "Se A Vida E", "Suburbia" and "Can You Forgive Her" are great as well. Quite surprised that neither "Being Boring" nor "Domino Dancing" have charted.
    In my very first monthly chart, back in August 1979, the number one was “One Day At A Time” by Gloria - and now, in the four hundredth, “Sonnentanz” by Klangkarussell becomes the latest, and the two hundredth, to reach pole position. The instrumental that is currently in the top five in Switzerland and Germany as well as their homeland, Austria, for Tobias Rieser and Adrian Held climbs five places from its number six debut in November, having been October’s Chartbuster, and is the record-breaking eleventh number one of this year. Just one track held the top spot for two months in 2012 - Wiegel, Meirmans and Snitker with “Nova Zembla” - although Fun hit the top twice, with “We Are Young” in June and “Some Nights” in September. Both of these tracks are still in my top ten - indeed, “We Are Young” is the first hit since Haiducii’s “Dragostea Din Tei” in 2004 to remain there for as long as six months after being at the top. It has slid downwards so slowly that it has so far only reached number eight. With “Some Nights” also down one place at six, the American group came very close to having three hits in adjacent positions, as their third is this month’s Rapid Riser. “Carry On” races up thirty-two places to number five, and must be a strong contender for the first number one of 2013. That’s one of nine climbers this month - another of which is Katie Melua’s “The Walls Of The World”. Up seven places at number 18, this is now just above the other two successes from her latest album - “The Bit That I Don’t Get” at 20, and the former number one and former Chartbuster “Better Than A Dream” at 19. Among twenty-five other tracks moving downwards are former Chartbusters by Joan Franka and Barbara Dex - who have the fastest faller and longest laster respectively. “You And Me” dives thirteen places to 39, while “Before” shuffles down three at 30, having spent a whole year inside the top forty.
    That leaves room for four new entries this time. November’s Chartbuster from Kato, “Suits You Well”, debuts at number 15 - which has recently become a popular position for Chartbusters to enter at. It’s the sixth to appear there in 2012! It’s the first success for the 21-year-old Belgian - but the other three newcomers are all for acts who also still feature in my current top ten. Django Django are down one place at ten with “Default”, and follow that up with “Hail Bop” at 40.....Jessie Ware is down one at six with October’s number one “Wildest Moments”, and “Night Light” is brand new at 34.....and Lana Del Rey falls from two to three with “Summertime Sadness”, but has the highest new entry at 13 with “Blue Velvet”. She also has one of this month’s six new breakers with “Ride” - but these are outnumbered by former hits and breakers by Kylie Minogue, mostly tracks re-recorded for her recent album “The Abbey Road Sessions”. Joining her latest (but smallest) UK hit “Timebomb” and the four former major successes that returned last month are “I Should Be So Lucky”, “Never Too Late” and “On A Night Like This”, giving her an unprecedented eight simultaneous breakers - although none are actually in the top 100. Nor is a new potential hit for the Killers, “Here With Me”, or a possible first hit for the Swedish but occasionally London-based electropop duo Icona Pop, with “I Love It”. Years ago, I don’t imagine that I ever thought I would buy a single including lyrics such as “I threw your sh!t into a bag and pushed it down the stairs” - but I guess there’s a first time for everything!
    It has been quite some time since a Christmas-related release has entered my top forty - however, one that may do next month is from another duo. It’s a collaboration between Tom Smith of the Editors and Andy Burrows of Razorlight - “When The Thames Froze”. Meanwhile, in the most closely-contested battle for Chartbuster for some time, the Russian singer who was at number one in August with “Don’t Leave Me (Ne Me Quitte Pas)” narrowly misses out, but makes such a high debut in the breakers that a new entry in January is virtually certain for Regina Spektor with “How”. But guaranteed to get a new hit then is a 44-year-old Canadian singer who has already had nine solo top forty entries - and also impressed me with several other recordings, some performed together with other artists. Her first success was with the song which brought her victory in the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest, “Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi” - and her latest was over nine years ago, “I’m Alive”. Most of the others were in English - but now she returns to singing in French. My Record of the Month for December 2012 is Celine Dion, with “Le Miracle”.
    I generally buy singles whenever possible - but, as the only two copies of "Le Miracle" as a single on ebay are currently priced at several hundreds of pounds each (presumably they are very rare!) I bought the album instead (£7.19 from WOWHD, formerly CD WOW). I think the only other track I have heard is "Parler A Mon Pere" - both were featured in the Swiss chart show on DRS-3 Radio in recent weeks.
    I noticed that, when I was collecting in the top fives for the most recent UKmixParade! Unfortunately, it didn't make an entry - as your chart for that week wasn't posted until after the beginning of the next one, and later that week it was back down to number three.....
    Thanks! When I first started, I think I considered doing it weekly, but realised that it would be annoying if I had to miss a week from time to time due to study, or later work, commitments or other reasons - and that the limited number of records I was buying meant that it probably wouldn't change much from week to week anyway. Monthly meant there would be no gaps!
    Recently, I have been giving some thought as to whether, at this point (the end of 2012 / four hundred months) I should change the format, rules or methodology of my charts at all. One option I even considered was stopping entirely - as I suspected that it would be becoming more difficult / impossible to source the tracks I liked on physical formats - vinyl ideally, or at least CD - and this problem is likely to worsen as time goes on!
    The quality of new music is, arguably, also on the decline - which has meant that there is a chance that in some months there will be very few new breakers. Although the eligibility of old hits and former breakers to return has enabled some newer releases not to hang around for quite so long, I thought about reducing the length of the chart and/or the breakers. On the other hand, the existing approach has worked well enough without change since the beginning of 1994 - when I allowed tracks that were available on CD only, not on vinyl, to enter the top forty for the first time, subject to slight restrictions on position and movement. But, since then, less than a hundred have charted on CD only.....so I think I have decided to retain the current format and rules for the foreseeable future.
    Previously, I have revealed more of my favourites from decades gone by - posting top hundreds of each year up to and including 2009, and I've also combined several of these into charts of five-year periods. All of these can be found earlier in this thread - and there's a full index in the very first post! However, up until now, I have avoided posting any kind of "all-time" chart - mainly as it would only ever be up-to-date for one month, as the points scored by each track in each new month's top forty would gradually move them upwards, as everything else slides slowly downwards to accommodate them!
    December, though, is traditionally a month for lengthier countdowns here in the Personal Charts forum - and, to celebrate reaching this four-hundred charts landmark, just this once, I'm going to gradually count down my top four hundred of all time throughout the month. I've worked out that I need to set aside an hour a day to have a reasonable chance of getting to the end without delaying the first new chart of 2013 - which hopefully I can fit around other commitments such as work (which, all being well, I expect to do for just one day in December) and the UKmixParade of 2012, for which I need to start combining well over three thousand top fives in about a week's time! So I plan to post a new instalment at midnight every day if at all possible - starting now!
    I can reveal in advance that the top 400 includes one track from 1966, one from 1968, and at least one track from every year from 1971 to 2012.....and, although I'm unfortunately not going to have time to include the full chart-runs, I'm noting as usual for each one their peak position, the total number of months they spent in my top forty, and their place in the appropriate annual chart (so it can be seen even from an early stage how many hits are still to come from each year!)
    So, let's make a start - and, as there are some unusually long tracks right at the bottom of the top 400 (two are close to five and a half minutes each!) this initial hour covers just the first fifteen hits - a typical mix of the very well known and the almost completely unknown! ( Although, as I've mentioned before, almost all have been sales successes somewhere! )
