Thanks, Benny and JSparksFan - you agree on some of the highlights of this month's chart!

I took a while to get to like "High Hopes" too - I'm now hearing almost as much of the follow-up,
"Hey Look Ma, I Made It", but I'm not really finding that at all impressive.

For this month's first retro chart, it's back to a month in which there were twelve new entries - something
that I don't think has happened in the current century! But it happened occasionally in the earliest years
of my chart - especially when I finally managed to obtain singles or albums including them that had long
eluded me. Thirty-six years ago, when I was eighteen years old, and coming to the end of my first year
at university, it's clear from this chart that I had just found an LP containing two singles from a duo that
I had heard in the Irish charts four years earlier. Indeed, I can remember which record shop that was in -
and, even more miraculously, it is still there today.....

Thanks, Benny - I had discovered the first three in my earliest months of listening to the Europarade, and
felt that they all stood a good chance of belatedly charting in the UK when "Top Of The Pops" did a feature
on that chart and played clips from them. But, as we know, only "Words" turned into a major success here
while "Juliet" and "Puttin' On The Ritz" both fell short of the top 75.....

Now, this month's second retro chart - from when I was twenty-five years old, and was notified of the last
promotion I would ever receive at work! But I was still keeping in touch with the charts of several European
countries, and obtaining quite a few continental singles that were doing well there at the time. plus others
that had previously eluded me. There had also been some very good entries in the Eurovision Song Contest
from that year, twenty-nine years ago. This was the music I was enjoying in June 1990:

Thanks again, Benny - on its way to a peak of number six, that's one of my favourites from Kylie too.
And this Mecano song was about to climb right up to number one, and earn a place in my all-time top 100.

Now, right back to the present - and we're already half way through another year!

Two songs occupy exactly the same positions in my July 2019 chart as they did in June – and they’re right at the top, as “So Am I” by Ava Max stays ahead of “Nothing Breaks Like A Heart” from Mark Ronson featuring Miley Cyrus, and spends a third month at number one. Her former number one, “Sweet But Psycho”, slides two places to number five, the highest of twenty-six hits moving downwards. But none of them take major dives, four sharing the “honour” of fastest faller by declining all of five places each. They’re all “back catalogue” tracks, and include Alisha’s Attic with “Pretender Got My Heart”, dropping from 13 to 18, “Brother” from CCS, going from 28 to 33, and “Nut Rocker” by B Bumble and the Stingers, descending from 34 to 39. Just above the last of those, sinking from 33 to 38, is “The Carnival Is Over” – and the Seekers’ time in my top forty may also soon be over, but they are also the longest laster, spending a fifteenth month in the chart. Meanwhile, five of this month’s eight climbers are in the top ten – “Speechless”, the former number one from Robin Schulz featuring Erika Sirola, moves back up from four to three, and that’s just above “Sweet Violets” by Dinah Shore, up from five to four. “High Hopes” advances three places to six for Panic! At The Disco, and it’s now joined inside the top ten by Henry Mancini with the theme from “Cade’s County” and Ofenbach with “Rock It”, at ten and eight respectively.

Gabriella Cilmi goes up another four places to number seventeen in her seventh month with “Warm This Winter” - while two of May’s new entries are now accelerating, after climbing five places each in June. “Diamond Heart”, by Alan Walker featuring Sophia Somajo, races up ten places to number 25 – but the Rapid Riser is the former Dutch number one from Davina Michelle. “Duurt Te Lang” zooms up from 31 to 19. All of this means that four tracks, all of them former Chartbusters, have dropped out of the top forty – but, of course, the eleven out of fifteen that remain are now joined by a twelfth, as Leonora makes the strongest impact with “Love Is Forever”, straight in at number 16. The Flames, a rockabilly pop band from Mannheim, make a very belated debut with “Everytime” at 35 - while three places higher there is finally a successful follow-up to the single that was number one in my chart in January, February and March 2008! That was “A-A-A-Anthem” – and, eleven years later, Bart Peeters is back with “Kies Mij”. Finally, sneaking in at 40 is Avicii featuring Aloe Blacc, with “S.O.S.”.....

.....and Avicii also has a further potential posthumous hit arriving in the breakers in the form of “Heaven”, which features uncredited vocals by Chris Martin from Coldplay. This surely has a good chance of success – as Avicii, Coldplay and uncredited vocals by Chris Martin have all previously topped my chart, with “Collide/Fade Into Darkness/Penguin”, “Viva La Vida” and Dua Lipa’s “Homesick” respectively. Meanwhile, Hooverphonic have had two previous number ones – “The Night Before” and “Romantic” – and could be on their way to a third with “Looking For Stars”. Madonna has never reached number one in my chart, but three of her twenty-eight hits have peaked at number four. Those were “Celebration”, “GhostTown” and “Take A Bow” – and the 60-year-old now has her thirty-ninth breaker with a track from her recently-released new album that was performed at the Eurovision Song Contest, “Dark Ballet”. But slightly nearer to the top forty - and unluckily missing out on being this month’s Chartbuster for reasons that will shortly be explained - is a 27-year-old contemporary Christian singer and songwriter from Lafayette, Louisiana. Lauren Daigle is currently having unexpected chart success in various Western European countries, especially Belgium and the Netherlands, with “You Say”. Those four relatively recent tracks are joined for the first time in the breakers by six previously overlooked and uncharted songs from much longer ago – 2000, to be precise. Three of them were performed in that year’s Eurovision Song contest – “Fly On The Wings Of Love” was the winner from Denmark for the Olsen Brothers, while “Once In A Lifetime” by Ines and “My Star” from Brainstorm gave both Estonia and Latvia top five finishes, just ahead of the song that was chosen to represent Germany. However, there were three potentially better prospects that were rejected in Germany’s national final – Fancy with “We Can Move A Mountain”, E-Rotic with “Queen Of Light” and A Kind Of Blue with “Bitter Blue”.

According to various online sources, the concept of “unintended consequences” is one of the building blocks of economics – and the “law of unintended consequences”, often cited but rarely defined, is that actions of people (especially government) always have effects that are unanticipated. A fairly memorable recent, and especially amusing, instance of this was probably when the Natural Environment Research Council invited the public to put forward suitable names for a new polar research ship, and discovered that the most popular suggestion was “Boaty McBoatface”. This month, I think it could be argued that the same rule applied to me, as I read a magazine article about, and online discussions of, a television series that aired forty years ago. When I investigated its availability on DVD, the general indications were that the UK release was no longer available, except perhaps at very inflated prices – but there may be alternatives from other countries. An especially cheap one was from Italy, where a “collector’s edition” box set containing the whole 26-episode series was priced at less than five euros. I reasoned that, although the episodes may only be viewable dubbed into Italian, this should still enable me to decide whether an English version was worth seeking out. Although I know little or none of that language, I was already familiar with the show, and the books on which it was based – Enid Blyton’s “The Famous Five”. So, as I suspected, the DVDs were only in Italian – but nevertheless I watched and enjoyed them. Having reached the end, I wouldn’t really say that I had picked up much of the language.....but I had heard, fifty-two times, the specially-composed Italian theme tune to the series. And now, as Chartbuster, that’s guaranteed a place in my top forty next month. It’s by a singer and actress who, sixty-three years old now, has had a long and successful career in music, television, theatre and other media. My Record of the Month for July 2019 is Elisabetta Viviani, and “La Banda Dei Cinque”.

I wouldn't be surprised if Graham Norton had wittered all the way through it - but I certainly heard it, in between the two others that Madonna performed, while listening to the radio coverage on Irish radio. I didn't hear any mention of what the track was called, though, and had to do some research later to identify it from the lyrics as "Dark Ballet"!

    Edit - Wikipedia says:

    Live performance

"Dark Ballet" was performed by Madonna on Met Gala in May 2018, when song was yet known as a "Beautiful Game".
A part of the song was performed at the Eurovision Song Contest 2019, alongside Madonna's "Future" from the same
album, and 1989 single "Like a Prayer".

Thanks for the comments, Blondini and Colbie!

Now, back to a time when there was much more better music in the charts than there ever is now -
although, curiously, it was a month in which a lot of songs were reaching their peaks, as over a quarter
of my chart was static. Thirty-two years ago, I was studying for my final professional exams, I had just
been promoted to audit senior, and these were the hits I was enjoying.....

YOU GOTTA BE A HUSTLER IF YOU WANNA GET ON - Sue Wilkinson
TAKE AWAY THE HEARTACHES / MEINE KLEINE FREIHEIT - Nicole
DAME UN BESO - Raffaella Carra

.....and the next one that did likewise:

THE YOUNG DOCTORS - The Executives

The first time that a song that was a new entry at number two did then rise to number one

ONLY THE ONES WE LOVE - Tanita Tikaram

Who was # 1, when Sue finished on the second place in your chart ?

I discovered this single through your personal chart some years ago and it was the love at first sight. It's my favourite song of 1980 and the one from only three singles with 10 or more weeks at # 1 in my retrospective charts.

Do you have her album or just some singles ?

I do have the album - this one, only released on vinyl, never on CD - which includes the version of the song
with uncensored lyrics. The only other track from it that reached my chart, however, was also on the B-side
of the single - Double Dealin' Day.

It was at number two for two months of 1980 - August, behind "The Green Fields Of France" by the Furey
Brothers and Davey Arthur, and September, behind "Do It, Do It Again" by Raffaella Carra. Both of those
are among the longest-running hits ever in my chart, and are both in my top five of all time.

@CZB, you are really lucky music collector.
It's very rare album, possibly only the one, which I didn't find, even not available on piracy sites with millions illegal mp3s.

Some years ago I did the retrospective # 1 lists for 1980-1981, based on UK singles.

    1980
    1. Fiddler's Dram - Day Trip To Bangor (06.01.1980) (3 weeks)

    10. Brotherhood Of Man - Will You Love Me Tomorrow (06.07.1980) (2 weeks)
    11. Mo-dettes - Paint It Black (20.07.1980) (2 weeks)
    12. Sue Wilkinson - You Gotta Be A Hustler If You Wanna Get On (03.08.1980) (5 weeks)
    13. ABBA - The Winner Takes It All (07.09.1980) (3 weeks)
    R. Sue Wilkinson - You Gotta Be A Hustler If You Wanna Get On (28.09.1980) (1 week)

    23. Bucks Fizz - Making Your Mind Up (05.04.1981) (3 weeks)

    32. Altered Images - Happy Birthday (04.10.1981) (2 weeks)
    33. Dooleys - And I Wish (18.10.1981) (3 weeks)
    34. Aneka - Little Lady (08.11.1981) (3 weeks)
    35. Bucks Fizz - The Land Of Make Believe (29.11.1981) (9 weeks)
Her 5th (and last ?) single "Toy Boys" also must be # 1 in 1982, but I didn't find any info about the week of release.

Sinead Quinn also spent 10 weeks on the top with "I Can't Break Down" in 2003, the record holder had impressive 14 weeks at # 1, I can't name her, because don't want to spoil # 1 in one my ranking.

5 number ones out from 5 singles is unique result in my chart.
allSTARS* were very near with this record, but only 4 their singles were released.
