Selma Blair is to star in a US version of Australian comedy Kath and Kim.

An initial six episodes will be made for NBC with Blair as daughter Kim and Molly Shannon as mother Kath.

The show, whose Australian incarnation has aired on BBC Two, is about the pair's dysfunctional relationship.

NBC had plans to order a pilot first. Channel co-chairman Ben Silverman explained it was instead getting a full season under a new straight-to-series approach aimed at cutting wastage.

He said: "This hilarious new series exemplifies how we are changing the pilot process by ordering shows that we believe in and green-lighting them straight to series.

"We are confident that this proven international hit will effortlessly translate to American audiences and we couldn't be more excited that Molly and Selma will be playing the leads."

The series will be produced by Reveille and Universal Media Studios. Gina Riley and Jane Turner, who created and starred in the original, will executive produce with writer Michelle Nader, Rick McKenna and director Paul Feig.
What do we think about this? I hope it makes Gina and Jane a lot of money & a full season means it might have a fighting chance.

But will it be noice, different and unusual with tickets on...or a dud root, getting up our goats leaving us gropable?

I dunno. I can see the concept travelling well...

And as it seems there are a new team of writers on the NBC version, I doubt it's a straightforward attempt at a direct remake.

Hate to say it, but a big part of me agrees with Plym....however, I'd be interested to see how the American series goes....I just hope it isn't horrible!

I do agree, the yumour is pretty universal though the fact they're Australian are what makes the show funniest.

Gina and Jane will be executive producers on this, so it's hopefully going to be a sucessful tribute the Kath & Kim show...and it may well do OK considering the sucsess of The Office and it's American version.

NBC has ordered seven additional instalments of new comedy Kath & Kim, extending its first season to 13 half-hours.

Filming has recently been completed for the first episode of the show, which centres on the dysfunctional relationship between mother Kath (Molly Shannon) and daughter Kim (Selma Blair).

The series, based on the Australian show of the same name, will premiere on October 9 in the coveted slot following The Office.
    Great stuff.

Funnily enough I had a dream about Kim and Kel last night.

Whatever it's like, I wonder if there'll ever be a scene to top Sharron singing the Australian national anthem, followed by the scat version (one of the funniest things I've ever seen)!

Some more scenes in this clip.

The glass door line made me smile but it kinda makes me feel bad seeing those people acting out all the K&K characters. And Magda didn't want to sign away the character of Sharon so she wont be in it.

Still not sure if this is gonna be good, what's everyone else thinking?

Things aren't looking good for the Stateside adaptation of Kath & Kim.

Although US network NBC promoted the upcoming comedy heavily during its recent Olympics coverage, the series has reportedly failed to register with uninterested American viewers.

Research firm Frank N Magid Associates surveyed viewers to gauge the impact of Kath & Kim ads which aired during Olympics highlights such as Michael Phelps' and Usain Bolt's record-breaking efforts.

Only 31 percent of viewers recalled seeing promos for Kath & Kim - compared to the 44 percent who remembered ads for Heroes - and of that 31 percent, just 13 percent said they would tune in to the series, which is slated to premiere in October.

Kath & Kim has proved to be a risky gamble for NBC, which ordered 13 episodes of the comedy without seeing a pilot episode - a feat almost unheard of in the US TV industry.

Small screen analysts have previously predicted that Kath & Kim, which stars US actresses Molly Shannon and Selma Blair in the roles made famous by Aussie comediennes Jane Turner and Gina Riley, will flop.

But NBC nevertheless has faith in the struggling sitcom, which it compares to the American adaptation of The Office: the first season of that series also struggled, but it has gone on to become one of the country's top-rating comedies.

    That was awful.

Kath wasn't Kath enough, she was too real.
Kim wasn't selfish or spoilt enough.
    Phil Knight was cringeworthy.

They haven't taken the language K&K speak in on board and they hardly had any of the catchphrases which make it what it is. It was basically just any US sitcom about a suburban setting with the same old jokes.

It wasn't nice, different or unusual at all.

Skelo, where did you see this?

kushi, Aussie TV may have decided to drop it, but it's not theirs to "cancel" - NBC are the ones who comissioned the series, and 13 episodes have been made.

Pa-ta-to, pah-ta-to. Aussie TV have canceled/dropped it from their schedule. I think everyone knew what i meant. Im aware 13 episodes were commissioned, and my comment "i'll stick with it" addressed that.
