Another former teacher here!
I now work in local government for a city council, on a two-year graduate management programme.
I am still a teacher and I love my job. I'm currently teaching a 4th grade, a 6th grade and an 8th grade. I teach English, Maths, Science and German.

A few reasons, but mainly the lack of work/life balance! I’ll miss the holidays but that’s about it for now. I could always go back to it if need be!
What did you teach, @Thriller ?

True, I get the impression that jobs are like that are no longer "jobs for life" like they used to be for many people - the professions of public sector employees like police, nurses/doctors, teachers etc seem to get tougher each year.
I withdrew my candidacy for a public sector role earlier today (was due to interview for an HR Business Partner role in a Schools Trust) - public sector working doesn't make for good reading these days.
I’m still in public sector but it’s such a different culture to schools, so far so good! I considered social work but thought it’d be out of the frying pan and into the fire.
Lots of my friends still teach and although you get better at managing time and working smarter, they’re still constantly frazzled!
Past: railworker, bartender, Zara, worker in Greenhouses
Present : Zara (again)
Future :no clue, there's 2 options, to stay in Zara or go somewhere else (Germany or Ireland)
What I dislike the most about the job is that you have to work in the afternoon - after school. There used to be a time when I prepared my lessons 1 day in advance and had to work every single day of every single week of every single month.
I stopped that. I also grew a lot and routine has set in a little bit. I've been teaching grade 6 for 3 times in a row now... and can re-use a lot of the material / work sheets which I have created which saves me a lot of time.
The best thing about being a teacher is that no day is the same and that you really do bond with your students.
My past jobs include:
.- 2004-2015 - working at a pharmacy whole sale
.- 2005-2006 - civilian service at a Kindergarten
.- 2006-2008 - working at a cinema
.- 2015-2019 - TEACHER (state certified since 2016 aka 2. Staatsexamen) (state employed "public officer" since 2018)
My education:
1992-1996 - Grundschule / elementary school (years 1-4)
1996-2005 - Gymnasium / grammar school (years 5-13) (Abitur)
2007-2009 - Studying History / French at Kiel University (CAU)
2009-2012 - Studying History / Englisch at Hamburg University, B.A. (1,41)
2012-2014 - Studying History / Englisch at Hamburg University, M.Ed. (1,50)
.- winning the Academic Prize of Research for "Wikipedia in Schools" from the University of Hamburg in 2013
.- Published author since 2014, my book: Differenzfähigkeit von Lehrerinnen und Lehrern can be purchased online.
.- The State library Hamburg also features my B.A. thesis, while the Teachers library of Schleswig-Holstein features my Staatsexamen termpaper / thesis

If anything I want to show my students what they could achieve if they put their best to it.
What I love most about being a teacher:
bonding with the children, expressing my creative side, long holidays
Before I became a teacher, I worked at entertainment at a holiday park for almost four years. It was the best job ever as I got to sing/dance/present/act/write... just everything I love. Still, it had lousy payment, always working during weekends, late at night and at holidays plus short hours so I had to work almost every day to get enough money without going to the socials.

holidays are so amazing (as a teacher). I mean, in GER we have 12 weeks... (+ national holidays).
2 weeks - spring break
6 weeks - summer break
2 weeks - autumn break
2 weeks - winter break
+ a combined 2 weeks of national holidays added together + individual school breaks.
Whereas the bond with students indeed was great, I wished I could get rid of some annoying co-workers. I felt GTFO Mariah Carey-style.
Some of them really annoyed the sh*t out of me.
I kept in touch with the intelligent and outspoken ones though and we frequently meet to catch up and socialize.

Not always I'm afraid. But I kept conversations at a bland level and almost mute.
At the school I was working, we got paid by hours we have worked. There was no fixed salary you received at the end of the month. And there was this clique of quite older teachers who used to get into the principal's head and stole lessons from us younger teachers. I thought that was fairly mean to express it in a polite way and I got myself into a bit of a fight for not accepting the seniority that we were overruled by.
However, I've made three very fab teacher friends at that time and I would not change them for an upgrade in popularity amongst colleagues.
I'll be going for a 6 hour hike with one of them and another one is visiting me on Friday.![]()
