    Anyway, this is interesting that Mary tied with Diana.

    hmm, all of Diana's certified sales add up to about only 10 mill records, and even though she started to chart in the 60s and many of her albums/singles haven't been certified there's no way she sold as much as 110 million - 60-70 million records would be more realistic...

    ^^^^Actually NOT. MJdangerous has her at 50-60 million albums alone. She sold millions of singles around the world. Forget about certs especially for artist in the 60s-70s. She sold around 5.8 million singles in UK alone.

    that figure may be correct only if the 50-60 million refer to records not only albums, and by the way mjd's estimations are mostly very inflated.
    This comes from another, more realistic chart 'expert' ;) who was asked about Diana's sales:

    I checked to see what her actual sales look like in different territories, and it shows that she has sold some 11 million records in US, some 600,000 in Canada, she has sold only 100,000 in France, only 80,000 in the Netherlands. She does not seem to have certifications in most of the countries including Germany, Austria, Brazil, Mexico, Norway. All in all, her actual sales does clearly show that she could not have sold as many as 100 million records. My estimation for Ross would be 50 million in the best case scenario.
    don't know why he didn't mention the UK though, where as you said she may have sold millions, but even with those, the 110 million figure is waaay too much for her.

    You are going by certifications which in the 60s and 70s did not mean much. Who is that other chart expert you speak of??? Hopefully not you referring to certs.

    Diana is probably 12-13 million records in UK alone. Maybe more. She is more than likely missing many certs. Remember Mowtown was not that big on certs compared to other labels. Her chart positions alone can prove that.

    How do we know? It's only speculation how many records were sold especially with Motown albums. Motown sold more on singles than albums in the '60s with the Supremes probably being the highest sellers but we still have no clue. Sales research on albums released between 1956 and 1977 are hard to pinpoint.

    There is a debate whether it is fair to combine Diana Ross solo and Supremes sales. And if so why not combine Paul McCartney solo with The Beatles.
    The difference, in my opinion, is Diana sung lead on all these songs and often in the case of say "Love Child" and "Someday We'll Be Together", two of the biggest singles credited to Diana Ross & The Supremes when it has been documented time and again, Diana was the only Supreme on those singles, backed by the perrennial Motown background singers, The Andantes. Even on the #1 "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me", that is practically a duet between Diana and Eddie Kendricks. So yes, Diana should be credited with both her solo and Supremes hits. Whereas in The Beatles, there were leads from both Paul and John and even George on "Something".
    Also, Diana Ross #1 U.S. #1s should include 1997's "Mo Money, Mo Problems" that samples Diana's voice throughout, now that she has finally accepted credit. (Due to the false west coast/east coast rap wars, Diana felt uncomfortable accepting credit for her important contribution to that Notorious B.I.G. smash)!

    Chain Reaction certified Plagimum (100k) in Australia 1986.

    No question this is a global million seller for Diana with UK sales approaching 800k.

    This comes from Greasylake.org . I can't validate the numbers but they look plausible. I thought you'd find them interesting. As for certifications - Motown actually refused to become part of the RIAA for years. So almost NOTHING is certified from that label for most of its history.

    http://www.greasylake.org/the-circuit/i ... na+%2Bross

    THE SUPREMES / DIANA ROSS & THE SUPREMES - USA ALBUM SALES

    Note: Things that are not included below:

    * bootlegs and/or counterfeit releases

    * promotion-only and/or giveaway-only releases

    * interview-only and/or spoken word-only releases unless they've been released by THE SUPREMES's record company or specifically licensed by them

    * 'Various Artists' and Collaboration releases ('Supremes & Temptations, 'Supremes & Four Tops', etc)

    * EP or Mini-Album releases (album must contain at least 7 SUPREMES or at least 30 minutes of SUPREMES music)

    * Export Sales: albums made in USA but shipped overseas to be sold in other countries

    Album titles that are underlined are those that are nearing or awaiting an RIAA award, or an award upgrade

    I've asked the Greasylake guys how they got hold of the motown data. I'll report back with any information I get. It would be nice to have some level of validation on these numbers. We can't hope to be 100% accurate since so many of these were released such a long time ago. But we can hope to get a reasonable idea

    I saw these figures last year and tried to contact the originator through Greasylake but never recieved any response.

    Because of the Motown situation I'm always suspicious of any figures given for Diana with nothing to say where they might have come from.

    It gives pause to think that when Universal started claiming certifications in 1997 only four Diana Ross & The Supremes' singles were certified. Either they didn't sell as many as we think or much of the documentation has got lost over the years.

    This would mean that on average this album is selling over 300 copies a week which is amazing.
