INTRODUCTION
Welcome to the DVD Sales thread. DVD is the only format that has sales data from its beginning (March 1997) to the present.
SoundScan wasn't there when CD was launched back in the early eighties, so we don't know the first week sales of "Thriller" or "The Joshua Tree".
But when DVD started officially in March 1997, VideoScan was there to track the sales of the new format.
I'm planning to post interesting chart and sales data, but first please read the following notes:
When you compare the sales data please remember that the DVD sales from 1997 to 2000 were very small.
The market really took off in 2000-2001. The all time sales peak were the years from 2002 to 2005. Since 2006 sales are down, but still the format outsells every other format (CD, book etc) in the world.
The last update for EVERY DVD TITLE's total sales number is when the particular DVD made its final appearance on the official VideoScan DVD Top 20, which means that the sales figure might be smaller in some occasions.
There's no catalog chart for DVD. Older titles appear frequently on the weekly chart. For instance the classic Disney film "Pinnochio" originally peaked at #4 in 1999, but this year went to number one (Disney re-issue).
Feel free to post any request about peak positions, weeks on chart and total or weekly sales.
