Too bad iTunes means nothing anymore so Thriller won't be returning to the Hot 100, as streaming numbers aren't that impressive.

I do not understand some of the chart rules. Why for instance is Thriller eligible for the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Recurrents Chart but not for the All-Format Hot 100 Recurrents Chart (where it was already on Number One years ago)? Also it is obviously not allowed on the Hot R&B Songs but is eligible for the Billboard Hot 100 despite being a very old Song.

However - this is really a great Chart Week for MJ

Michael Jackson's Thriller is the most streamed album in the 80s.
    A well deserved masterpiece.

Oldbloke estimates the total sales of Thriller at 121,000 in 2018. The share of Vinyl Records in the physical sales is thus almost 70%. Absolutely unbelievable - nobody would have thought that 20 Years ago.

Thriller seems to be getting more and more popular on Vinyl. Just before Christmas 2018 it reached No. 1 on the Vinyl Billboard Charts for the first time in its 110th chart week!

I also wonder how many SPS Units Thriller generated in 2018. The Streaming Activities and Song Downloads of Thriller-Songs are often assigned to the Essential Album in the Billboard Charts. So we dont have a clear Picture here. I would not be surprised if it were about 400,000 Units. The RIAA definitly does credit those "Digital" Activities to the Thriller Album.

The 34 x Platinum Cert should therefore happen in 2019

U.S. Vinyl Album Sales Grew 15% in 2018, Led by the Beatles, Pink Floyd, David Bowie & Panic! at the Disco
    1/12/2019 by Keith Caulfield

Vinyl album sales in the U.S. hit their 13th consecutive year of growth, with 'Guardians' being the top-selling LP and "Yellow Submarine” the biggest vinyl single.

Vinyl album sales continue to be a bright spot among an otherwise bleak album sales picture. 16.8 million vinyl albums were sold in 2018, according to Nielsen Music (up 14.6 percent) — marking the 13th consecutive year of growth for the format. 16.8 million is also a new yearly high for vinyl album sales since Nielsen Music began tracking sales in 1991.

Comparatively, overall album sales (vinyl LP, CD, digital, cassette, etc.) in 2018 fell 17.7 percent to 141 million.

Vinyl LP sales accounted for 11.9 percent of all album sales in 2018 (16.8 million of 141 million). In 2017, the format comprised 6.5 percent of album sales.

Nielsen Music’s 2018 tracking year ran from Dec. 29, 2017 through Jan. 3, 2019. Due to a quirk in the calendar, there were 53 weeks in 2018, instead of the usual 52. So, for 2018 volume comparisons to 2017, a corresponding 53-week period is used by Nielsen Music for 2017: Dec. 30, 2016 through Jan. 4, 2018. Numbers in this story are rounded.

Perhaps not surprisingly, vinyl LPs were 19.1 percent of all physical album sales (CDs, LPs, cassettes, etc.) in 2018. That’s a new Nielsen-era record share for the once-dormant format, up from 14 percent in 2017.

Vinyl’s growing share of the physical album market isn’t shocking, considering CD album sales continue to falter.

In total, physical album sales equaled 88 million in 2018, down 15.8 percent. And of that sum, CD album sales were 70.7 million — down 20.9 percent.

The CD format continues to be the leader for all album purchases, while the digital format is the runner-up with 53.4 million digital albums sold in 2018 (down 20.7 percent).

TOP-SELLING VINYL ARTISTS: The top-selling vinyl albums artist in 2018 was the Beatles, with 321,000 copies sold of their catalog on vinyl. Their biggest seller was Abbey Road, which finishes the year as the No. 4 largest-seller, with 76,000 copies. The Fab Four also have two more titles among the year’s top 15-sellers: their self-titled (White Album) is No. 11 (56,000) and Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band is No. 13 (50,000).

The top 10-biggest selling vinyl acts of the year are rounded out mostly by classic and veteran rock acts:

    1. The Beatles (321,000)
    2. Pink Floyd (177,000)
    3. David Bowie (150,000)
    4. Panic! at the Disco (148,000)
    5. Fleetwood Mac (139,000)
    6. Led Zeppelin (138,000)
    7. Michael Jackson (131,000)
    8. Jimi Hendrix (119,000)
    9. Metallica (116,000)
    10. Queen (113,000)

Good news: both parts of the fake documentary had low ratings in the United States (1,2mi and 800k audiences, respectively).

Anyway, considering the current bad press, I wonder if the Estate will keep the project to release brand-new songs (or an album) this year. Let's see.

This trash movie was panned in Russia and it increased his airplay with 438% spins in this country.

Good to see some stats from these countries.

The documentary was a flop in other territories too, such as UK, Spain, Netherlands.

MJ saw increased sales/spins in many territories around the world. It'll be interesting to see how the rest of the years pans out for MJ. The 10th anniversary of his death was going to be a good year for promo but I'd expect some things to have been canned now.

^ This documentary was a flop everywhere. They though they could destroy MJ, but they forgot that MJ has the most loyal and dedicated fanbase of all time. They couldn’t destroy his legacy in 1993, they couldn’t destroy his legacy in 2003-05, they won’t destroy his legacy in 2019. I’m so glad to see that there are sane people out there who aren’t believing the lies of two money hungry losers.

The documentary wasn’t enough so the media will join forces now. But trying to erase the most successful artist in history will never happen. So proud of the MJ fans.

Billboard were caught out in their reporting. They obviously had a pre-written report stating that MJ's sales and streams declined in the immediate aftermath of Leaving Neverland and published it, but were forced to correct their story when figures showed that actually those figures in general remained stable and in some cases increased.

There were open and honest about it, but they lost some respect from me.

As for the documentary itself, some of the mainstream media are now finally beginning to report the many lies of Robson and Safechuck. Daily Express and Daily Mirror (both UK) have run reports on it. In Russia, Channel 1 actually decided not to air the show at all based on its bias and general inaccuracy.
