    STOPPED AT NUMBER 76

When the singles chart was extended from a Top 75 to a Top 100 on 8th January 1983, the following 105 singles just missed out on being listed in the Guinness Book of British Hit Singles by getting no higher than number 76. All acts with * next to them indicate they never charted with an album or single. Only titles that never made the Top 75 are listed – re-entries or re-issues that peaked below are omitted. The chart reverted back to a Top 75 from 13th April 1991 – so only this period is therefore covered. Information in brackets after this denotes position reached on Billboard charts, US preceding this indicating a Top 40 American hit, IND being a British Independent chart hit.

Yes, that's exactly why I put in the American chart positions, as it's interesting to see how our tastes vary with the Americans! Glad you enjoying these lists.

A nice round-up Wrangler, and one worth doing, although I always wonder how close to being the ACTUAL 76th best-seller of the week these or any other singles that occupied the position were, given that 76 was the first position affected by the various restrictions based on sales declines during this period and so the disc "officially" granted 76th may have come in behind one or more "starred out" releases below 75th.

Of course, measuring a single's performance based on the highest chart position it reached in one week is fraught with problems. One never has a like-for-like comparison week-to-week, even with a true best-sellers list, as each week sees a different sales tally being needed to register at each position on the chart; as we know this level could vary considerably, especially in late Quarter 4 weeks where pre-Christmas sales spikes significantly raise the bar for attainment of any position. We'll never know how much a single that managed to rank 75th in one week was outsold in its weekly (or overall total) sale by others in other weeks that had to contend with stronger sales from other titles and so didn't make the same grade. I daresay numerous discs sold more to reach 76 than many did to reach 75, but due to bad luck will never be carried by the official chart historian as a canonical "hit". This is why although we all tend to get hung up on peak chart positions, without a total sales figure, or an idea of relative sales in each week, or at least in the market generally during a quarter, we can never truly measure a title's commercial success, not now, not then.

The biggest disparity in sales attainment that the weekly chart positions masked must have been witnessed with the sudden inclusion, and exponential growth of, the download into the main singles market. This meant that a single whose physical-only sales were a mere 6,000 in a week could have equated to a chart position as high as No 5 in early 2005, yet by early 2010 with full incorporation of digital sales, the same total sale would barely be enough to make the Top 40.

Well when I researched this many of the singles that were at number 76 though not peaking there did get to 74 or 75 as their peak, so they just made Guinness Hit Singles. I am aware that Guinness did not use positions 76 to 100 as they were not necessarily the most honest, as some records with less sales fell so others automatically moved up! Still glad you like the list.

    STOPPED AT NUMBER 76 (2006 – 2010)

If you have a copy of Guinness Hit Singles edition 19, it lists all of the tracks that stopped just one place short of making the national Top 75 from 2000 to 2005. As that book is sadly no longer published, I have not continued on from this. We now list all tracks that just missed out on getting into the national Top 75 singles chart. Interesting list to read.

Can we sure though that they only missed the chart by 1 place because of the exclusion rule?

Hit Music newsletter was published from September 1992 to May 2001. From 1994 it carried the Top 200 singles but included all singles that had been excluded by the OCC under the rules in force at the time. As such it is an unofficial listing of everything below #75, though it is possible to work out many of the records that peaked at #76 on what would have been the official OCC list.

From 12 September 1992 to 5 November 1994 the newsletter carried the official Top 100 which was the same chart as Record Mirror had carried until its demise in April 1991. This was basically the top 75 in strict sales order with the exclusion rules applied to numbers 76 to 100.

The following records peaked at number 76 in the period September 1992 to November 1994:

Note: I've included singles that reached #76 on re-release or which were subsequently re-released at least 52 weeks later)

    "PEAKED” AT NUMBER 100

    1983 (08)

15 October This Mortal Coil – 16 Days (‘B’-side to ‘Song Of The Siren’) (IND3)

This is an interesting one because Record Mirror and Music Week listed this in a different way.

RM listed it as 16 Days for the first week and then
wrongly as either Song To The Siren and / or Song Of The Siren. I don't have all the MW listings but it's interesting to compare. So which one was right, because I am totally confused....

When it reached 100 it was only released on 12"
& then a week later the 7" Version was released & went upto #66.

    Tracklist:

    12" EP version
    Side One
    "Sixteen Days/Gathering Dust" (9:07)

    Side Two
    "Song to the Siren" (3:30)
    "Sixteen Days Reprise" (4:10)

Sixteen Days/Gathering Dust in an EP released by This Mortal Coil, a supergroup on the 4AD label, headed up by label founder and president Ivo Watts-Russell. It was released in 1983, after Ivo had tried to convince Modern English to record a medley of "Sixteen Days" and "Gathering Dust," two of the band's early songs that they closed out their live sets with. The band declined, but Ivo decided to assemble a group of musicians to record the medley. Members of Cocteau Twins, Colourbox and Modern English itself, along with vocalist Gordon Sharp of Cindytalk made up the band that recorded the title track of the EP.

Elizabeth Fraser and Robin Guthrie of the Cocteau Twins recorded the intended b-side, a cover of Tim Buckley's "Song to the Siren." Ivo was pleased enough with the results that "Siren" was made the A-side of the 7" release.

    Side One
    "Song to the Siren" (3:30)

    Side Two
    "Sixteen Days Reprise" (4:10)

Interesting supplement to the one I originally compiled from 1983 to 1991, listing all number 76 'peaks' regardless of re-entry, but in particular for the gap from April 1991 to December 1999, which I did not have any record of. January 1983 to April 1991 can be accessed on 'Chartstats' website, January 2000 to December 2005, there was a page in the final Guinness Hit Singles from 2006 that covered these. For 2006, I used the free Zobbel download to compile and for the rest back to good old Chartstats! But thanks for the gap for the 1990's though - very interesting!

Having perused Zobbel's website and the Official Charts Company there is certainly a lot of difference in chart entries and peak positions between 76 and 100. Which is the most reliable - I get the impression that Zobbel is the more reliable as there are many songs in Official Charts Top 100's from 1994 onwards that did not chart at all in Zobbel's information or peak way outside the Top 100? I am aware there is some difference between compressed charts and Top 100's, etc. but could anyone enlighten me about all this and which is the most reliable. I did compile a full list of positions 76 to 100 using OCC as this was a constant 'take' prior to using Zobbel's downloads from 1995 onwards although these do not list the actual charts in full and having compared my research from OCC with Zobbel there is such a difference!

The OCC's take on those charts from 1994 onwards is that the compressed charts are the official ones and that the chart that was published in Hit Music (the source of Zobbel's information) is unofficial.

Incidentally I do wonder how long Zobbel will keep his website up online. From what I can see the website has not been updated since February 2015 and Zobbel has already stated that he will no longer be updating it. Thankfully he renewed the registration in July 2018 but I just have an awful feeling that one day the site will just be taken down. A bit like Paul Hart's worldcharts.co.uk which suddenly stopped being updated in late November 2016 after being updated each week since the early 2000s. The registration of the site was then allowed to lapse and the site then went offline as a result. The poster has also seemingly vanished off the face of the earth which leads me to think he's another, like Dave Taylor and Hanboo who has possibly died.

    https://www.ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic. ... 3#p6368913

Paul still hasn't visted BuzzJack while logged in since 22 November 2016 which makes me think he's not in a position to visit BuzzJack or indeed any other website. He hasn't been at ukmix while logged in since 4 February 2016.

Getting back to Zobbel I do hope he's keeping fine. At least he's still around. He last visited ukmix while logged in on 4 November 2018 though he hasn't posted here since 3 January 2013. Perhaps he'd like to make a post just to let us know what plans, if any, he has for his website as it's such a brilliant resource that I would hate to see it vanish.

I always got the impression from Zobbel's site that he has interests in many areas of life - not always conventional mass-appeal topics, but things that would keep him more-than-well-occupied besides his chart interest. One assumes the man also has a day job to hold down and so perhaps he's just had more dumped on him which would soon eat into his capacity to indulge his online hobbies. Our own chartbuster KingofSkiffle's devotion to all-things-music has in no way diminished, but he has had his ups and downs of chart-led activity, based usually on the whims of his employment, over the years.

I agree though it'd be nice to get some confirmation from him that he will at least retain the resources he already offers, if only for the only access we have, and may ever have, to 'uncompressed' (and so by my reckoning complete and therefore superior) British Top 200 charts, albeit only from 1994 to 2001.

Zobbel now mostly works with Stamps and does have a day job. I suspect his website will not be removed, even if he does stop adding to it. For myself, my job (Senior Tutor in an International College teaching students form around the world) means I have time sometimes and less at others. Like others here, modern music does not really interest me much, but I will definitely stick with doing charts as long as ChartsPlus survives (almost 10 years for me working on that!) and that shows no signs of going just yet. Of course, if the modern isn't that great, the classic is and thats where threads like this score, reminding us of the past.

I never thought of checking the part of zobbel's website that isn't music related. Having just done so I see that he is still updating the part of his site dedicated to philately (stamps and other related items).

Some of the least successful singles ever released involving Freddie Mercury & Paul McCartney are in this list ... the Notting Hillbillies song was one of the few contemporary songs played on Radio 2 at the time.

I think I might have read somewhere before that XTC's 'Skylarking' had two number 100 "hits" on it. Why was Gang of Four's "To Hell with Poverty" reissued at that specific time? I think I might have seen an advert from that period with the 1959 Phil Phillips song on it, the most likely reason for such a reissue at the time.

That's another website that hasn't been updated for years and seems to exist in some sort of timewarp. The chart database was last updated on 30 August 2006.
