Starting tomorrow I'll begin my look at what I loved from 1999. It was the year I definitely agreed it was R&B all the way for me, listening to Trevor Nelsons Radio 1 shows every Saturday afternoon and Sunday nights, however some of my favourite songs from this era won't make this list as usual only UK top 75 hits will appear.

I think dance music was also a major influence this year as more Brits were going clubbing every Summer to places like Ibiza.

1997 The Verve - Lucky Man
1998 The Corrs - What Can I Do?
    1999 ?? - ??
    2002 Beverley Knight - Gold
2006 Keisha White - The Weakness In Me
2008 The Futureheads - The Beginning Of The Twist
    2009 Calvin Harris - I'm Not Alone
    2010 Shakira - Waka Waka

    On The Way...?

Oh yeah 1999.... this was when I turned 16 and started on my first nights out hammering the wkd irn bru. Looking forward to seeing what dance stuff you include in this year.

Shaft and Wamdue Project already stand out for me!

... and J'Lo - "If You Had My Love" was one of her best!

It certainly was! 1999 may have been an R&B year for you (but I guess if you're a regular listener to Trevor Nelson, every year is R&B ) but for me, 1999 was THE year of trance.

1999 was the peak of cheese!
Steps, Britney, Eiffel 65, Lou Bega, S Club...
But it was the year that made my second fave song of all time!

    Can't wait!

I'm interested, how do you remember what came out in 1999 when compiling these lists? Do you just look at year-end charts?

I'm guessing Shane compiled his year-end charts at the end of each of these years, while he still remembered what he liked from that year, based on his weekly personal chart!

Actually I think my lists have changed a lot from when I would have first done a year end chart at the time, the way I've done it thus far is to go through a list of the top 75 from each week checking the new entries

100 SUPER FURRY ANIMALS - NORTHERN LITES

    Reached #11 [May]

This was the Furry's best shot at a top 10 hit, just missing out at #11, it had a great Summer salsa feel to it and is one of my favourites from a much loved Welsh indie act.

    99 GOURYELLA - GOURYELLA

    Reached #15 [July]

This one is just trance gold, Ferry Corsten was behind Gouryella who went to have 3 charting hits, this being the most popular. It's tracks like this that gave way to the name Euphoric.

98 KAVANA - WILL YOU WAIT FOR ME?

    Reached #29 [March]

Kav's final single in the UK, 'parently was about his dead friend. I thought it was a sweet song, and at the time it was #1 on my personal chart. Sounds a bit cheesy now.

97 M.A.W PRESENTS INDIA - TO BE IN LOVE

    Reached #23 [July]

Ahhh I always forget how much I love this song until I listen to it, the vocal on this track is impeccable. Such a feel good track that comes back around with new remixes every so often. It just wraps up that whole vocal house sound into one feel good anthem.

96 BRAND NEW HEAVIES - SATURDAY NITE

    Reached #35 [September]

Sadly BNH'S appeal was decreasing by their 99 greatest hits album "Trunk Funk" which was lead with this funky as hell track.

    Kavana again!!! <3

Gouryella wasn't just Ferry in 1999 - it was a duo including Tiėsto as well (Tiėsto wasn't involved in the later stuff). Their stuff was OK - but I always thought that they'd done far better stuff separately.

"To Be In Love" is a beautiful track with a fantastic vocal.

    Oh not Kavana!

That Super Furry Animals one is very good. Masters At Work and Gouryella are both quality too. Both on my Ibiza anthems compilation CD!

I always feel To Be In Love is one of the most underrated dance tracks of all time.
It's beautiful yet always gets forgotten! Even by me!

    lol @ Kavana.

Oh Kavana! But I do remember thinking at the time it was his best shot at a #1 and then it went and bombed.

"Gouryella" classic trance and "To Be In Love" is so underrated! There were quite a few dance tracks from '99 that get forgotten now, hopefully some more will pop up in this countdown.

Love everything Brand New Heavies did.

95 PETE HELLER - BIG LOVE

    Reached #12 [May]

The producer of huge hits like The Farm's "Altogether Now", Primal Scream, Monie Love and Happy Mondays released his first and only solo single in 1999 sampling the 1979 single "Wear It Out" by Stargard. It was a song I wasn't overly keen on at the time, but I love it now.

    94 SUEDE - SHE'S IN FASHION

    Reached #13 [July]

This song is a stunning indie/pop track, I think Brett Anderson's voice could be a little irritating at times, but it worked wonderfully on this song, I loved the wind down towards the end of the track.

93 TIN TIN OUT FT.EMMA BUNTON - WHAT I AM

    Reached #2 [November]

This was the first time Bunton had released a single away from the Spice Girls, it was quite an unadventurous cover of a 1989 single by Edie Brickell & New Bohemians, but I think Emma's nice voice worked on this song, but not enough to beat Ginger to #1 that week.

    92 HOLE - MALIBU

    Reached #22 [January]

I've always had a little soft spot for Courtney Love and I think this was my favourite single from Hole. They seemed like a pretty cool band at the time, and she seems like a middle aged mess these days.

    91 REDMAN FT.BUSTA RHYMES - DA GOODNESS

    Reached #52 [June]

Just an infectious production on this track, I remember Red and Method Man performing this track at that years MOBO Awards and blowing the Royal Albert Hall up. Crazy tune!

Not so keen about the last 5, sorry.

Pete Heller is OK (and has released other solo stuff), as are TTO....

Pete Heller was good, though, same as you, I didn't see what the fuss was about at the time - it was pretty HUGE in Ibiza. I liked it more later on.

Loved that Hole song at the time and had totally forgotten about it since!

Pete Heller decent, not one I listen to much anymore though. Not one of my Suede favourites but nice enough, the strings are cool.

Tin Tin Out was an unexpected move for Baby back then IMO, did like it but I was a Geri stan

Not sure on the last two, my favourite Hole one is "Celebrity Skin" by far!
