What does 2003 mean to me? I came out in 2003, got my first boyfriend, experienced new things ( ), went clubbing for the first time, finished college and got my first job, I guess it was the year I was supposed to become an adult!

Music wise, I don't think it was the greatest year, in fact only a handful of songs I would say I totally love, but I managed to pull together 100 songs that I like. I think this was the year that R&B started to become really popular, mixed with Asian influences and the arrival of talented Brits like Amy Winehouse, Dizzee Rascal and Terri Walker, whilst solo careers were all the rage for Beyonce, Siobhan Donaghy, Appleton and Kelly Rowland to name but a few.

1997 The Verve - Lucky Man
1998 The Corrs - What Can I Do?
1999 Foxy Brown - Hot Spot
    2002 Beverley Knight - Gold
    2003 ?? - ??
2006 Keisha White - The Weakness In Me
2008 The Futureheads - The Beginning Of The Twist
    2009 Calvin Harris - I'm Not Alone
    2010 Shakira - Waka Waka

    On The Way...?

I agree 2003 was not a vintage year (though still a lot better than 2004) but I'm sure a few classics will appear.

    100 DAVID GUETTA VS.BOWIE - HEROES

    Reached #73 [July]

This was one I only found out about in the last couple of months due to the rise of Guetta and the interest around the song due to the X Factor Finalists #1 version last year.

99 JAKATTA - ONE FINE DAY

    Reached #39 [March]

The most chilled out of their tracks, this sounded like Gareth Gates doing chillout to me for some reason it worked, a definite beach tune.

    98 FABOLOUS FT.MIKE SHOREY & LIL' MO - CAN'T LET YOU GO

    Reached #14 [August]

The most successful Fabolous track in the UK so far, chilled out with great vocals from Mike and Mo.

97 WHITE STRIPES - SEVEN NATION ARMY

    Reached #7 [May]

Probably the best known White Stripes song, not quite my favourite, but it has such an unforgettable guitar riff which has made it more recently a popular Guitar Hero track.

    96 RUBY AMANFU - SUGAH

    Reached #32 [March]

A song I loved so much at the time, it made #1 on my personal chart AND I went and bought the album too (the rest was total crap!), chunky girl eats everything in the video...bless. Cute song but sounds a bit daft now.

    95 BLACKSTREET FT.MYSTIKAL - WIZZY WOW

    Reached #37 [February]

Loved this song at the time, in fact I think I was about the only person crowing on about it on UKMix, though the production was heavy, it was a silly song which didn't actually mean anything.

94 TERRI WALKER - CHING CHING

    Reached #37 [February]

Terri's first top 40 hit, a catchy little ditty, I do feel that she got into her stride a bit later into her career though.

    93 FLOETRY - FLOETIC

    Reached #73 [April]

An introductory track for writing duo, Floetry. While Neo-Soul was still a popular genre, Floetry came out with their debut single, which was so laid back and cute.

92 LEMON JELLY - NICE WEATHER FOR DUCKS

    Reached #16 [February]

Definitely a "marmite" song, but I love how this song builds (as do many of their songs), never meaning to be a chart hit, just experimental and fun music, some stunning horns towards the end.

    91 TEXAS FT.KARDINAL OFFISHAL - CARNIVAL GIRL

    Reached #9 [October]

I felt like this was a good idea at the time, not sure I totally like it as much as I did at the time, but it's still kinda nice.

Never knew about that Guetta vs. Bowie song, gonna check it out.

Easily the best White Stripes song for me, "Sugah" is a song I loved back then but probably haven't played since 2003!

"Carnival Girl" is a good track, I think they were hoping for a repeat of when they collaborated with Wu-Tang Clan though.

    Don't know the rest!

The White Stripes = 00's "classic" IMO.

I remember the Lemon Jelly song vaguely. *YouTubes* Ah yes, now I remember it...remembered the "all the ducks are swimming in the water" part, just not how it went musically. A song I definitely wouldn't have discovered if it weren't for UKMIX.
Let's embrace the point of no return.

    90 APPLETON - DON'T WORRY

    Reached #5 [February]

I reckon the Appleton sisters released some good solo material. I'd say this single was not so far away from some of their All Saints stuff. A Grower for sure. I love the "yeah yeah" final part to the song.

    89 UN-CUT - MIDNIGHT

    Reached #26 [March]

Fast and frantic, brassy track, I'm not really sure on the genre, it was a sort of frantic trip-hop. Even big band in places. The vocalist, Jenna went on to provide vocals for 4 Shapeshifters singles, including "Incredible".

88 KURTIS MANTRONIK - HOW DID YOU KNOW?

    Reached #16 [June]

Much forgotten dance hit, for me this was somewhere between Basstoy's "Runnin" and Silicone Soul's "Right On", magic!

    87 GROOVE ARMADA FT.SUNSHINE ANDERSON - EASY

    Reached #31 [May]

Diva-ish dance anthem, with big room vocals from Sunshine Anderson. She belts this song out, I love how it gets bigger and bigger and drops again and then belts out once more.

    86 MADONNA - LOVE PROFUSION

    Reached #11 [December]

It was Madonna's first song to miss the top 10 in 7 years, but for me it was easily the best single from the American Life era. Catchy, upbeat and joyful!

I loved Appleton, their album is great! Kurtis Mantronik is a favourite dance one of mine from the year, love the intro. Good Groove Armada and Madonna tracks.

    86 MADONNA - LOVE PROFUSION
    90 APPLETON - DON'T WORRY

Nice Madonna song and if you want there's a great remix by Ralphi Rosario of that.

Appleton + Kurtis Mantronix tracks = both good, but I like the latter more. The Appleton sisters did do some good solo material, agree there...was nice to actually hear their voices for once!

85 EMMA BUNTON - FREE ME

    Reached #5 [June]

The lead single from Emma's half decent album of the same name, was a light pop song not a million miles from previous hits "Take My Breath Away" and "What Took You So Long".

84 TERRI WALKER FT.MOS DEF - GUESS YOU DIDN'T LOVE ME

    Reached #60 [March]

Coffee lounge R&B now for Terri's debut UK single, very nice, soulful, I love that in this era Terri went for no gimmicks, no thrills, just singing cool soulful tunes with simple melodies.

    83 JAHEIM FT.THA RAYNE - FABULOUS

    Reached #41 [March]

Jaheim can be kinda average at times, vocally similar to Lemar, but songs a bit more stripped back. This will be my favourite Jaheim song as it's really cute with the childrens choir.

82 JOE BUDDEN - PUMP IT UP

    Reached #13 [July]

Joe's only charting hit in the UK, other than his feature on Christina Milian's "Whatever U Want" was this club banger, joining part of the crunk movement, this is a song that demands to be noticed.

81 LUMIDEE - NEVER LEAVE YOU (UH OH)

    Reached #2 [August]

Despite her vocals being quite reasonably questioned in this song, Lumidee scored a bit hit with this in the Summer, I'd say it's to do with the catchy beat and "uh oh's"

I really liked the Lumidee track at the time...

and yeah, it was all about the uh-uh-uh-ohs...

Love Kurtis Mantronix, Appleton, Joe Budden and the anthem by Lumidee!

"Free Me" is my third favourite Emma song, I actually loved that era for her!

Joe Budden is a great club track, always gets played round here.

Lumidee was definitely a soundtrack to the summer along with Blu Cantrell, Wayne Wonder, Sean Paul - I was a real fan of that era of R&B.

    80 UN-CUT - FALLIN'

    Reached #63 [June]

Their follow up single, Fallin' couldn't have been much more different to Midnight, this was a chilled out pop track with soulful vocals. I actually picked up their album too and it was just as all over the place.

79 BLACK EYED PEAS - WHERE IS THE LOVE?

    Reached #1 [September]

This was the song that thrust the Peas from being a little known hip hop and funk band to one of the biggest pop acts in the world, it was a little bit cheesy, but it worked, introducing us to Fergie in the process.

78 ASHANTI - ROCK WIT' U (AWW BABY)

    Reached #7 [June]

2003 had one of the hottest Summers on record in the UK and it was songs like this that just sounded great in that weather in the garden with something a little alcoholic! Great remix of this too with Michael Jackson's "Rock With You".

77 MASAI - DO THAT THANG

    Reached #42 [March]

To be honest I never knew why they bothered with this group, they never knew when to release it, it kept coming on and off the Box music playlist and when they finally released it, it had still had no promotion, which is a shame because this song was kinda cool.

76 COUNTING CROWS FT.VANESSA CARLTON - BIG YELLOW TAXI

    Reached #16 [February]

I'd always loved this song so I was unsure when I heard the Counting Crows were doing it, who I've never liked, but they did a good version with Vanessa adding just enough to make it special.

"Where Is The Love?" grates on me now but I loved it at the time more so the Justin Timberlake original vocal.

Think that's probably my favourite Ashanti song.

Masai I remember seeing live in 2001 and it still took them another 18 months to release that song?! It always reminds me of The Box too, pretty good song.

That Counting Crows/Vanessa Carlton one is boring IMO.
