Have to say this one was a strange one for me, because the whole 2004-5 period for me all sort of merges into one and I can't really remember what came out around then, I don't know why, I guess it was the point I started clubbing a lot, but I guess I should really remember what I was dancing to around then..

I enjoyed looking back through the charts from this period and reminding myself! As ever, all songs in my list made the UK top 75 as a new entry in 2004.

This year one artist appears Four times in this countdown...I think if I remember right, the only other artist to manage this was Texas in 1997.

1997 The Verve - Lucky Man
1998 The Corrs - What Can I Do?
1999 Foxy Brown - Hot Spot
2000 Mary Mary - Shackles (Praise You)
    2002 Beverley Knight - Gold
    2003 D Kay & Epsilon ft.Stamina MC - Barcelona
    2004 ?? - ??
2006 Keisha White - The Weakness In Me
    2007 T2 ft.Jodie Aysha - Heartbroken
2008 The Futureheads - The Beginning Of The Twist
    2009 Calvin Harris - I'm Not Alone
    2010 Shakira - Waka Waka

    On The Way...?

    Better get crackin' innit!

100 NAILA BOSS - LA LA LA

    Reached #65 [July]

Sandwiched between features on 2 top 10 hits in 2004, Naila Boss's solo release, LaLaLa was less successful, which was quite ironic given the theme of the song was how she was the boss..

    99 SIMPLY RED - HOME

    Reached #40 [April]

The final single from the album of the same name, this was a really underrated track for me. A really nice soulful ballad.

    98 SHYSTIE - ONE WISH

    Reached #40 [July]

Linking up the last 2 tracks, here's another UK female MC and another track to peak as low as #40. I think Shystie still has a lot of potential, this track has a lot of attitude, but was probably a little too hard to have been a radio hit.

97 ANGIE STONE FT.SNOOP DOGG - I WANNA THANK YA

    Reached #31 [August]

This is probably my favourite Angie Stone single, because it's light and fluffy, perfect for the Summer and Snoops laid back style of rapping works perfectly with it.

    96 V - YOU STOOD UP

    Reached #12 [November]

I don't think they were ever destined to be the next big thing, A1 had done the same thing 5 years earlier, so they were a bit outdated by the time they came out, but this was a nice ballad, well forget the song anyway, they all looked so hot in this video! Extra points awarded!

I quite liked that V song - that boyband always seemed to be very...er.. close.

The rest isn't really my thing, but looking forward to seeing where Mousse T, Franz Ferdinand and Damien Rice end up.

Really like that Simply Red one and V weren't too bad, I loved their cover of "Can You Feel It?"

95 NELLY FT.CHRISTINA AGUILERA - TILT YA HEAD BACK

    Reached #5 [December]

It seems this song made way for Christina to go down the big band brassy sound for her following album "Back To Basics". This song is sexy as hell!

94 TALI - LYRIC ON MY LIP

    Reached #39 [May]

Already a minor top 75 hit in 2002, it was thanks to production by Roni Size that saw the song become a top 40 hit in 2004. I could see this being a bigger hit now.

    93 BRITNEY SPEARS - TOXIC

    Reached #1 [March]

So here's a rare appearance for Britters in my list. One of a couple of songs that I actually like by her. I think this could possibly be her best for me.

    92 JA RULE FT.R KELLY & ASHANTI - WONDERFUL

    Reached #1 [November]

This was just one of the most random #1s ever, and so at the time became the lowest selling #1 single ever. I like it as a slick R&B track, but I have no idea why it became his only chart topper.

    91 SPEEDWAY - CAN'T TURN BACK

    Reached #12 [February]

A charming song that I really like, but like Ja Rule previously, I can't explain the success of it. This was certainly better than their cover of Genie In A Bottle.

2004 was an awful year for music.
I like Britney and Angie Stone so far.

    Terrible song form Nelly/Christina.

Nelly & Christina is great but she overdid that sound.

Speedway a good Texas-esque track but I loved "Genie In A Bottle" too.

Ja Rule is OK but I'm always bitter at it for being #1 when Dannii deserved it that week, despite only making #7!

Still a Britney classic, I don't think anything she's done since has touched it in terms of mass appeal.

Love "Toxic" - she was still sexy back then too.

    91 SPEEDWAY - CAN'T TURN BACK
94 TALI - LYRIC ON MY LIP

Speedway is literally the best song of 2004.

90 DAVID MORALES - HOW WOULD U FEEL?

    Reached #71 [October]

Typically a Morales production when you listen to it along the "My All" remix 6 years earlier, but the vocal made this one good. I think it was released twice if I remember right. Dance station, Galaxy hammered it to death.

89 NERD - SHE WANTS TO MOVE

    Reached #5 [March]

NERD's biggest UK hit, had a great funky guitar beat. I loved the really noisy remix too that featured Common, Mos Def, De La Soul & Q-Tip.

88 SHYSTIE - MAKE IT EASY

    Reached #59 [October]

This one went a little more preachy than One Wish in an Estelle, Ms Dynamite, Speech Dabelle kinda way, taking a sample from the Walker Brothers.

    87 DEEP DISH - FLASHDANCE

    Reached #3 [October]

Surprise massive hit for me. I liked the vocal, didn't think the song ever really gets going, but it's nice.

    86 RUPEE - TEMPTED 2 TOUCH

    Reached #44 [October]

Big Soca Carnival hit from this year...maybe a year after Kevin Lyttle and Wayne Wonder managed it, but I've always really loved Caribbean music and I think it's timeless!

David Morales' track is great (I've discovered it 2 years after it's release).

    Deep Dish is marvelous.

85 GERI HALLIWELL - RIDE IT

    Reached #4 [December]

I think it's a shame this song wasn't bigger than it was, because unlike the other Spice Girls, Geri kept true to the unashamed camp sound they found fame with on this single. Disco cheese.

    84 LL COOL J - HEADSPRUNG

    Reached #25 [August]

As soon as this one kicks off, there's a killer Timbaland beat that wouldn't sound out of place on one of the Shock Value albums.

83 THE STREETS - BLINDED BY THE LIGHTS

    Reached #10 [October]

I always liked the atmospheric building sound of this track, but when I heard the live lounge version on the Radio 1 album, I absolutely fell in love with it, as one of my favourite Live Lounge recordings ever, incorporating the classic Garage jam "Bump N Grind" by Mubs into an upbeat part towards the end.

82 UNITING NATIONS - OUT OF TOUCH

    Reached #12 [December] (Peak #7 January 2005)

Apparently there was distribution problems when this song came out as it was never anticipated to be anything like as big as it was. I've heard a couple of versions with different verses and stuff, but the original looped house version works fine for me, taking a sample from the Hall & Oates song of the same name.

81 AVRIL LAVIGNE - MY HAPPY ENDING

    Reached #5 [August]

I loved this album, but it took time for me to appreciate this track as a single. I love the bridge that leads up to the chorus. I think this track lead up to the successful sound of Kelly Clarkson later on.

I dislike Avril Lavigne immensely but that's probably her most decent song.

LOVE Blinded By the Lights & She Wants to Move.

Like all her songs, that Geri Halliwell track is terrible.

    Stop trolling please Plym.

David Morales is brilliant, NERD's second-best song, Deep Dish too cool and I was so glad it peaked well.

Geri - great song but she was acting too weird in this era, LL Cool J good, Uniting Nations good but a bit repetitive and was so overplayed, Avril Lavigne nice but much preferred "Don't Tel Me".

80 BIG BROVAZ - YOURS FATALLY

    Reached #15 [October]

I really loved Big Brovaz at the time, but they do sound quite outdated now. This was one of their more ballad-esque tracks, which became a bit of a fan favourite.

    79 I DREAM - DREAMING

    Reached #19 [November]

Hear me out here, I really didn't like the S Club Juniors, and I never watched this TV show or whatever it was, but there was something quite charming about this song, I guess part of it was it's release around Christmas that allows a bit more cheese into my usual playlist!

    78 OCEANLAB - SATELLITE

    Reached #19 [May]

I've liked quite a few Oceanlab singles since this, though this was the only sizeable UK hit, despite the fact that most of their singles have followed a similar sort of sound. One of the last great trance anthems!

77 KATIE MELUA - CRAWLING UP A HILL

    Reached #46 [July]

Easily my favourite of Katie's singles as this song actually had a big of umph to it! A cute little folk song without the wrist-slitting feelings her stuff usually evokes!

76 DEEPEST BLUE - GIVE IT AWAY

    Reached #9 [February]

Not quite as good as their self-titled debut, but similarly it really did have a deep underwater sort of sound to it. Great vocal!

I loved that Big Brovaz one, thought it'd be really big for them! I Dream is a surprising entry, sooo cheesy and awful lyrics ("eat if your hungry"). Oceanlab and Deepest Blue are both good tracks, still listenable today.
