Yeah, I can't really fault her debut (It has that classic 80s "Whitney"/"Whitney Houston" sound in places, which I adore!), but "Emotions" is a pretty solid follow up. A little too flat in places but it's definitely her most overlooked album.
Agreed. I'd love if her vocals were louder as well and no so pushed into the background of the songs because those vocals are absolutely sublime.

Me too. I like how the vocals are louder on the debut and the vocal arrangements more slickly produced in general. "Emotions" lacks the musical diversity the debut possesses but it has more of a cohesive mood with its throwback Soul vibe, you know. I'm glad she's listening to those albums in particular to be inspired for her new effort. Lawd knows I can't handle another Butterfly retread (which will of course fail to match the magnificence of Bfly anyway).

Yeah, there was definitely something wrong with the mixing on the album.
Maybe it was the sound they were going for, but the vocals (especially the belts) had this distant, muffled & echoey sound that just sounded off.
    Underproduction, maybe?

I like this better than her debut though. It's far stronger IMO.

Yes. I'm very reluctant to hear she is listening to any of her previous albums but I'm glad it is these albums that she is listening to even if it is just to hear her vocals and lyrics alone. But she has marked each major change in her life with some of her strongest material. Her divorce from Tommy gave us Butterfly. Finally getting over the Tommy mess and Glitter, the breakdown and awful media attention and showing us she was still as good as ever gave us The Emancipation of Mimi. So hopefully now, the birth of her children which is another landmark in her life, will give us another masterpiece.

Yes! I've always said that about the "Emotions" album.

    Especially in the ballads.

The album's flow is just too slow imo, even though it only has 10 songs on it. It looks as if it lasts sooo long.

Mariah said that she was aiming for something more soulful and raw.

Mariah is the only person I can think off the top of my head who has perfect belting technique. The power when she belts comes from her chest but she allows them to resonate in her head, creating the bright, bell-tone effect.

I think it's underproduced because her belts on Music Box were still extremely powerful but the bell-tone after-effect was really muted.

This album is the one I always forget exists. I tend to agree with the everyone that says its slow paced, but overall it's not that bad.

That's precisely why, IMO, Emotions is better than both her first album & Music Box. I'm glad she stopped using the '80s tricks for the music on her debut. It's a vocal & musical masterpiece. And I'm also glad it wasn't overproduced and polished like Music Box - or, to some extent, even her first album.

(This is just a thought, but maybe her debut album would've been huge musically if Sony didn't try so hard to make it sound more pop. It's like they cut off Mariah's soul out of her own songs. This is why I feel something odd everytime I listen to this album.)

Emotions is very classy and classic; in a way, it was less trendy than her other early albums. In a sense, Butterfly follows the steps of Emotions. They both share the same qualities.

The production work may seem outdated now - due to the music industry nowadays using again the '80s patterns -, but the songs are definitely strong. If the purpose of her (strong) debut album was to introduce her to the world, Emotions was out there to say that there's only one Mariah Carey, and she does not share power!

Very underrated album, If It’s Over, Can’t Let Go & So Blessed are some of my favourite MC songs.

This like her wild card album. Not no where near my fav of hers, but I still like it a lot.

I think it's the best of her first 3 albums though.

    This album is everything.
Nobody will ever match this vocal masterpiece.

I love every single track in this album but my favorites are:

Till the End of Time (my favorite Mariah song)
    Can't Let Go
    And You Don't Remember

This is her 2nd best album to me, after Butterfly.
Every song is amazing or at least very good.
The Wind is an unterrated jazz masterpiece.

I am really surprised this isn't praised more. I much prefer it to her debut album. It's one of her albums where each song is a knockout AND the album works as a collective whole.

I prefer this album over her debut album. It’s a shame it didn’t match the success of her debut album. But I remember the first time I listened to this album in full, I was so amazed on how solid the album is. Till the End of Time and The Wind gave me shivers when I first heard it. But my favorite song from this album is Make It Happen. I remember being in a difficult time and when I first heard it, it gave me so much hope.

The debut is miles better than this. Still iconic and a template for aspiring vocalists!

The first half of the album is too strong compared to the second half.
