Babes, that's because Celine Dion is better than all of the rest, so she needs an epic write up.

Congrats to Madonna ~ I'm not her biggest fan by a long way, but I do love songs like Papa Don't Preach, La Isla Bonita & Like A Prayer, and there's no denying she's the most successful female artist of all-time

    Hello HAL9000,

I'm a big Michael Jackson fan myself and he even made my Top 10 here. I have all his albums, including several compilations (with very redundant tracklists which I still bought). I also own several DVDs, I even purchased "Michael" last year and I will probably be getting the new album his record company is releasing during 2011.

And Queen are my favourite act ever, by far. I have thoroughly gone through their entore catalogue.

When I claim that Freddie Mercury was clearly the better singer, I'm basing it on a number factors including some of the ones you mentioned, plus the vocal phrasing, and in general, the ability to give each song what they need. I really don't care about the vocal range that much, mainly because they were pretty similar in that regard and because their vocal ranges were wide enough for them to sing virtually anything in popular music. Freddie Mercury was definitely more expressive with his voice and a better interpreter (this isn’t related with what we feel when listening to them, but with certain aspects).

It is difficult to explain, at least in English. Freddie Mercury took everything much further, and was more inventive and diverse than Michael Jackson. I always remember the vocal orquestration in "Seaside Rendezvous" (where he madde his voice sound like several instruments), or "The Kiss". Plus, he covered far more music genres. Basically, it is about the good conditions (including the thing you mentioned); and about how to be wise and clever enough to use them properly in a song. The technique and the interpretation.

As songwriters, I'm sorry but Michael Jackson was nowhere near as talented as Freddie Mercury on the whole. Mercury was in a league of his own when it came to his songwriting abilities (although he isn't regarded as that, unfortunately).

The way Freddie Mercury put some many rich ideas, melodies, arrangements and stuffs into certain individual tracks, has virtually no parellel in popular music. Some of Queen's song have so much in them, that they would have been enough for other bands to make an entire album. In "Bohemian Rhapsody" alone, you have more musical ideas, inventivenes (and complexity too) than in the entire "Thriller" album for example. And I can say the same thing about other songs written by Freddie Mercury, like "The March Of The Black Queen", "The Millionaire Waltz", "In The Lap Of The Gods", "Bicycle Race", "Innuendo" and so many others.

Man, just in "Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon" (a one minute track), there are more chords and key changes than in those big Michael Jackson hits. That doesn't make it a better song per se; but when you notice how those musical resources were used, you realize that Freddie Mercury was unique in that regard.

I'm planning to post my Queen reviews in another topic, I will probably invite you so that you see what I think about Queen's music and all. I hope you will like the stuff in there.

But yes, both Freddie Mercury and Michael Jackson were great, two of the best singers and two impressive accomplished all around musicians. Widely recognized, but still underrated in certain aspects. But I personally think Freddie Mercury wins hands down. I wouldn't claim I'm "musically educated" or anything like that, but you will be able to find out plenty of reasons as to why I think Freddie Mercury was the best musician ever in popular music when I post my reviews (which I already wrote this year in this forum but I need to put together). I'm just someone posting opinions in a forum.

Thank you for the link. I respect your opinion, although I personally disagree.

Good for Madonna. I didn't vote for her, but mainly for tactical reasons than any other thing. A tremendous artist.

The beatles should have been number 1 but I think the top 5 has the right people in it. Personally I think Madonna is better than Micheal. She has been consistently creative and has made good music throughout her career. Micheal only made about 3 good (but slightly overrated) albums and the rest were just average.

Also I'm sad you didn't put American Life or Bedtime Stories in her 'Key Albums' I think they are her best along with True Blue and Ray Of Light

I agree. This "I hate Madonna because I'm a Mariah fan" is kinda sad when you get passed age 12. Like it or not, other people do like her.

Some people just don't like her, I don't think that's the issue.

This isn't for NothingFails, but Madonna stans always seem to bring Mariah into a discussion when it has nothing to do with her.

What a joke this countdown was. Madonna at number 1? More like polluting the masses with her illuminati music. Mariah ranked too high, Elvis too low, Johnny Cash too low, Pink Floyd too low. ABBA is okay

    Ok.

First of all, my qualms with Madonna and her music has little to nothing to do with Mariah Carey. Second of all, like therealestMC said, why is it that Mariah Carey just has to be brought up by a Madonna fan when she's irrelevant to the conversation? Third of all, if you're gonna make a remark about me...address me. Thank you much.

So yeah. I do have a problem with Madonna being ranked so high. It's utterly ridiculous...

As for Elvis: sorry to break it to y'all but Elvis was not original. Yes, Elvis had a good voice and yes, Elvis could move them hips but Elvis is truly only famous for bringing rock 'n roll to mainstream (AKA white) audiences. The very terminology "rock" and "rock n roll" came from who? Yes, that's right...African Americans.

Almost everything that Elvis did in his prime, he copied from black singers and entertainers at a time where they had pretty much no chance at success and acclaim outside of church and nighttime gatherings at some club. But yeah, after some time had passed, Elvis got more and more original. Still that doesn't change what he and/or the people he surrounded himself with were trying to do.

I'm not saying I don't like his music. I'm just telling the truth.

HUR, I'll be glad to read your Queen review. One of the beauties of being human is we all have the exact same feelings but at the same time we feel and see things differently. Each individual is a different and has a different perception, view of the world. Art is the highest form of human expression, it's honest, it's personal and it can't be completely objectively assessed. Music and lyrics are forms of art therefore you can't quantitatively evaluate music or lyrics to the point that you can say A is universally better than B.
I respect your view and comparison of MJ and FM vocal and creative abilities but I see and hear and evaluate their vocals and music differently.
Both were a geniuses, the high-end of creativity and their art speaks for itself but for me Michael Jackson is THE one. His music moves my body and he touches my soul and my heart like no one else and that's the greatest thing you can get from art(ist). I will not go into the analysis of Jackson's songs, but I'll say his opus is very personal and engaged, in which, apart from the love themes, he often talks about (lost) childhood, violence in society, racism and intolerance, human greed, social inequality and injustice, tabloid media, ecology, our planet, isolation from society etc. Regarding MJ music, his great legacy is a fact that he brought so many different music elements in his tracks: pop, funk, r&b, new jack swing, rock, hard rock, jazz, disco, african rhythms, gospel, hip-hop, world music, classical music, opera, etc. and that is one of the reasons why he is a model, inspiration for a whole generation of musicians from different genres around the world.

I didn't say that Elvis wasn't original (or did I?). Several of his nuances (i.e. vocally) were...just nowhere as original as some people would like to think.

I don't like Madonna topping the list because she's gimmicky. If it wasn't rolling around on the ground in a wedding dress, it was causing serious problems for Christians everywhere. If it wasn't trying to give Christians ulcers, it was making that coffe-table sex book. It was always something.

Don't get me wrong: breaking barriers does take some balls. But, sometimes too much is just too much. When you base your career on imagery, changing the status quo, what's hot and basically shocking people, it gets old after a while and you're getting close to rendering yourself classless.

Besides, the Queen of Pop is a disputable title, unlike King of Rock 'N Roll, King of Pop, Queen of Soul. Not everyone knows who Madonna is. Her influence isn't nearly as powerful as Michael's.

I mean, in all fairness, she's not the only entertainer to rely on sex, other vapid things and controversies for fame or iconic status. Like Prince for example. Prince could be downright nasty...but Prince had the talent to back it up. And he knew when to tone it down.

Plus, (even though I don't know her) from what I've seen, she's not a very nice person and definitely not someone I'd sit down and shoot the breeze with...

I'm not a fan of synth pop, euro-dance pop, or just pure, unadulerated pop (although there are a lot of gems in the genre). Not to mention, she's completely unapologetic for some of her less than...admirable moments...

    And no, I'm not Catholic.

I don't know if you're joking or not. The idea of Santa Claus wasn't original-original either. You had old people walking around giving good children gifts and bad children "gifts" for centuries before Saint Nick...

^Titan3510 .......You make it looks and reduce the whole Madge career as it was all about image and sex: but you only show you do NOT have a clue...or at least try to put discussion on that track because of your convenience, LOL!!

Yes image and personal attitude have been always discussed when it comes to such global megastar, and you know what: the same also happened to Michael for most part of his career:I mean sadly in the last 2 decades media and press put scandal and trials above everything Michael made musically: does that diminish or cancell Michael great achievement as music act?? ABSOLUTELY NO!!!!!
In the same way to say that Madge was all about scandal, and bla bla bla is absolute BS....someone should remind you indeed that besides that Madge is by far the most succesfull female act ever for RECORD SOLD....and is among the group of very FEW BIG LEGENDS who have sold more than 300 milion record!!
I mean people buy MUSIC not your scandal...if was enough just scandal and talk to sell...oh well Paris Hilton music career(just to make an example) would have broken any kind of record....

Furthermore.... coicidentally the"sex" and "scandal" period, you are focusing all about, rapresented one of the lowest peak of Madonna entire career.... even her second renaissance as an act (commercially) came up with "Evita"...than "Ray Of Light", and than "Music" era....which everybody knows were far from being all about sex and scandal and were universally critically acclaimed.....

Not talking about the fact of how greatly she cemented herself as one of the greatest alltime tour acts ever....and I could go on and on here.......!

Once again basing the discussion just about the scandals just shows, for me, a lack of argument!!

And in last, why on earth there is no need to bring up Mariah here: is that YOU that decide it??...Mariah made the list too and we are allowed to comment: I mean, you have fulling the last couple of page with the likes of..."...Oh no: Madge above Michael? I JUST CAN'T".." lol...may I be allowed to let you notice that that may sounds not less surprising than seeing in the same list a Mariah above Elvis?? And how strange you start to diminish Elvis everywhere here...since I just noticed that
    There's only one Queen
    and that's MADONNA.

Denise, I would add that the "Sex/Erotica" era was a big step for her...
I mean, she could have sticked to the regular pop that was "hot" at the moment and try to recreated "Vogue" for instance. Instead she chose to release singles like Justify my love or Erotica, which where different from what was on the radio at that time and were very risky... I think the whole sex and soft porno was something that was inspiring for her and she did what she wanted to do instead of sticking to the pop formula. I celebrate that!!!! Besides, I think the EROTICA album was good as a whole! It was just a commercial dissapointment (she paid the price for doing what she wanted)
