    TONY'S HITS CHART: 10th AUGUST 2019

1 NE Bat For Lashes - The Hunger
    YOUTUBE

Natasha's 6th #1 is a stunner that echoes Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel. She directed the video.

2 1 Ghum - Saturn / Get Up / 1000 Men / In My Head (The Coldest Fire EP) (3 weeks; peak #1)
    3 2 Taylor Swift - The Archer (3 weeks; peak #1)

11 NE Groove Armada - I'll Be Searching (For You) YOUTUBE

16 NE Tool - Fear Inoculum YOUTUBE
Not quite up there with their best. Normally i'd rate it higher upon buying the album CD but there's only an eighty quid box set version scheduled so probably not gonna happen.
quite love it to be honest, not as good as my #1 Schism and bit too long.

I was wondering why our Polish main music store is selling this CD for almost 400 PLN (like 80 pounds) but I see now it's not a regular CD but the box of sth.... I wonder if there's a vinyl version to purchase as well (and please let it not cost like 1000 PLN)

    TONY'S HITS CHART: 17th AUGUST 2019

    1 NE Kitten - Memphis
    YOUTUBE

A different style for them but still classic Kitten as Chloe celebrates ten years of the band she created. If only they had the followers of Nasty Cherry - Chloe is back at home here (NC haven't got higher than #10).

2 NE Charli XCX ft Sky Ferreira - Cross You Out YOUTUBE

Charli misses out again - to her friend. This is musically as you would expect from this team-up, with Charli offering raw heartache for the first time.

and it's just bad luck that these two mighty records came out at the same time and made Natasha dive.
    3 1 Bat For Lashes - The Hunger (2 weeks; peak #1)
4 2 Ghum - Saturn / Get Up / 1000 Men / In My Head (The Coldest Fire EP) (4 weeks; peak #1)
5 NE Miley Cyrus - Slide Away YOUTUBE

It's taken her over 11 years to finally crack my top ten! She previously got as far as 13 with both See You Again (original mix) in 2008 and Fly On The Wall in 2009. This slinky track is co-composed with Miike Snow's Andrew Wyatt and it shows.

    6 3 Taylor Swift - The Archer (4 weeks; peak #1)
    7 5 Electric Youth - The Life (12 weeks; peak #1)
    8 4 Caroline Polachek - Parachute (4 weeks; peak #2)
9 6 Winona Oak - Break My Broken Heart (2 weeks; peak #6)
10 11 Groove Armada - I'll Be Searching (For You) (2 weeks; PEAK)
11 7 Bat For Lashes - Kids In The Dark (10 weeks; peak #1)
12 8 Fiona Grey ft Emma Cole - Saviour (10 weeks; peak #3)
    13 9 Caroline Polachek - Ocean Of Tears (4 weeks; peak #9)
14 NE Marsheaux - Home (I Dream My Dreams) YOUTUBE

    New version of 2006 song.

15 NE Josh Garrels ft Jason Barrows - The Banner YOUTUBE

Unofficial lyric video embedded. Regular label upload in link.
A CCM artist that doesn't sound like one. More on him on albums...

    16 12 Chloe Lilac - Manic Pixie Dream (2 weeks; peak #12)
    17 13 Tigertown - Warriors (2 weeks; peak #13)
18 10 Charli XCX and Christine and The Queens - Gone (5 weeks; peak #2)
19 NE Taylor Swift - Lover YOUTUBE
    20 14 Torche - Admission (5 weeks; peak #7)
21 NE The Darkness - Heart Explodes YOUTUBE
I was unsure about this but the chorus burrows into your brain. That high pitch!

22 15 The Chain Gang Of 1974 - From Here Who Knows (4 weeks; peak #10)
    23 16 Tool - Fear Inoculum (2 weeks; peak #16)
24 NE Ionnalee and Zola Jesus - Matters YOUTUBE
In stark contrast to the pop magnificence of...

    25 17 Ionnalee - Remember The Future (11 weeks; peak #5)
    26 19 Electric Youth - Arawa (6 weeks; peak #14)
    27 22 Electric Youth - Breathless (3 weeks; peak #17)
    28 25 Grace VanderWaal - Waste My Time (2 weeks; peak #25)
    29 18 Rachel K Collier - Dinosaur (11 weeks; peak #1)
30 20 Bat For Lashes - Feel For You (4 weeks; peak #13)
    31 21 Kim Petras - Do Me (12 weeks; peak #1)
    32 24 Heaven - Truth Or Dare (6 weeks; peak #13)
    33 26 Nasty Cherry - Live Forever (2 weeks; peak #26)
34 23 Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard - The Spaceships Of Ezekiel (6 weeks; peak #16)
    35 27 Caroline Polachek - Door (9 weeks; peak #4)
36 29 Florian Picasso ft Echosmith - But Us (9 weeks; peak #11)
    37 31 Angela Perley - Let Go (3 weeks; peak #31)
    38 28 Allusinlove - It's Okay To Talk (4 weeks; peak #20)
39 RE Maren Morris - The Bones YOUTUBE (video) (4 weeks; peak #23)
40 NE Sateen - Gotta Gimme Your Love VIDEO (mildly NSFW)

    -------------------------------------------

    TONY'S ALBUMS CHART: 17th AUGUST 2019

1 NE Electric Youth - Memory Emotion
    SPOTIFY
    2 1 Angela Perley - 4:30 (2 weeks; peak #1)

If you like Damien Jurado, Scott Matthews, Jonathan Wilson...

    5 3 Hatchie - Keepsake (8 weeks; peak #1)
    6 4 Kim Petras - Clarity (7 weeks; peak #2)
7 NE Marc Cohn and Blind Boys Of Alabama - Work To Do SPOTIFY
I'm coming at this as a Blind Boys fan and though there's not enough of them here it's a decent set.

    8 5 Hans Zimmer - Dunkirk (OST) (3 weeks; peak #1)
    9 6 Banks - III (5 weeks; peak #2)
    10 8 Torche - Admission (5 weeks; peak #6)
11 NE PP Arnold - The New Adventures Of... PP Arnold SPOTIFY
Her first album in 50 years made with mods Cradock and Weller. Slightly outstays its welcome.

    13 9 Berlin - Transcendance (2 weeks; peak #9)
14 NE Slipknot - We Are Not Your Kind SPOTIFY

1 NE Kitten - Memphis - cute music video, but the song is not that perfect for me
21 NE The Darkness - Heart Explodes - I just love those goofballs
40 NE Sateen - Gotta Gimme Your Love - I liked the song, but the music video was a bit too much for me artistically
    ALBUMS
1 NE Electric Youth - Memory Emotion - deserving the #1 spot this week, no doubt about it
15 NE Feeder - Tallulah - I actually prefer Feeder's album over Slipknot, none is remarkable, both are filler type of music, but Slipknot manages to oversell it

    TONY'S HITS CHART: 31st AUGUST 2019

    1 8 Taylor Swift - Lover
    YOUTUBE (3 weeks; PEAK)

5th number one. Do Americans really take down their Christmas lights/trees after Christmas Day? Most people in the UK wait until January 2nd at the earliest! I'll take this timeless folk-pop bop over a million Sheeran / Ezra / Capaldi songs.

2 NE Cigarettes After Sex - Heavenly YOUTUBE

Their first hit here. And i see no issue in having this aptly titled delight in a TS sandwich.

    3 7 Taylor Swift - The Archer (6 weeks; peak #1)
    4 1 Kitten - Memphis (3 weeks; peak #1)
    5 5 Miley Cyrus - Slide Away (3 weeks; peak #5)

Looks like i'll be embedding this song three times in total! Here's the VMA's live clip.

    7 3 Bat For Lashes - The Hunger (4 weeks; peak #1)
    8 4 Bat For Lashes - Jasmine (2 weeks; peak #4)
9 NE Bombay Bicycle Club - Eat, Sleep, Wake (Nothing But You) YOUTUBE
By far their biggest song here and it's significantly poppier and more instant than anything previously.

10 RE Taylor Swift - You Need To Calm Down (8 weeks; PEAK)
11 6 Ghum - Saturn / Get Up / 1000 Men / In My Head (The Coldest Fire EP) (6 weeks; peak #1)

24 18 Charli XCX and Christine and The Queens - Gone (7 weeks; peak #2)
    25 NE 808 State - Marconi YOUTUBE

    TONY'S ALBUMS CHART: 31st AUGUST 2019

1 NE Taylor Swift - Lover
    SPOTIFY
Her 3rd topper in a row (i've not checked but i don't think she did it before 1989). The (mainly) synth-pop magnificence of 1989 returns. I bought the CD, which i still haven't done for Sharon Van Etten or Hatchie. That's how impressed i was.

The album really kicks in with track 2 Cruel Summer - takes balls to copy an iconic title of another song but it is sublime and - astonishingly - co-composed by St. Vincent! (as Annie Clark). If some "indie" people still aren't won over by the involvement of Jack Antonoff and Joel Little then see Annie's credit and turn up their noses they are being wilfully delusional. The Man sees Joel Little even re-use his voice effects gimmick from Lorde's Tennis Court.

Some songs could be cult synth goddess Allie X - Miss Americana and The Heartbreak Prince, and the echodrop beauty of Afterglow. Death By A Thousand Cuts reminds me of Diana Vickers - the subtlest synth pop with brutally lovely lyrics. It's Nice To Have A Friend has a beatless calypso chant backing that sounds like something Foster The People or Friendly Fires might do. Paper Rings is a more acceptable and less cloying variation on Me!'s skippy-pop (i usually detest skippy-pop so for me to love it is no mean feat).

Soon You'll Get Better (featuring a barely noticeable Dixie Chicks) is a spare ballad about her parents' fights with cancer - her mother has just had it return (my mother died of secondary cancer). Following that with False God (a hymn to delusion no less) is just genius placement - it sounds like Banks or Jessie Ware, i swear if i played it blind to someone they'd never guess it was Swift. You feel both lifted and disturbed by the track placement. The tracks i've not mentioned aren't filler, either.

By leaving ...Calm Down and Me! near the end of the album she's got immense confidence in the material - rightly so. A higher level 9/10 (don't do halves!) - better than Marina.

2 NE Eskmo - 13 Reasons Why: Season 3 (OTVST - Score) SPOTIFY
It's a shame the (young) fans don't bother with his scores. They are always more successful artistically than the compilations.

    3 1 Electric Youth - Memory Emotion (3 weeks; peak #1)
    4 2 Angela Perley - 4:30 (4 weeks; peak #1)
    5 3 Josh Garrels - Chrysaline (3 weeks; peak #3)
6 NE The Night Cafe - 0151 SPOTIFY
7 NE Various Artists - 13 Reasons Why: Season 3 (OTVST) SPOTIFY
Highlights are Charli's Miss U (not a single despite some thinking it is), existing songs by The Decemberists and Frightened Rabbit and Eskmo and White Sea's cover of Ordinary World. As ever, some of the best songs they use in the series are ones they can't get the rights to use on a soundtrack or that don't fit in the marketing.

    8 6 Marina - Love and Fear (21 weeks; peak #1)
    9 4 Eskmo - 13 Reasons Why: Season 2 (OTVST - Score) (2 weeks; peak #4)
    10 5 Ride - This Is Not A Safe Place (2 weeks; peak #5)
    11 9 Hatchie - Keepsake (10 weeks; peak #1)
    12 10 Kim Petras - Clarity (9 weeks; peak #2)
    13 7 Shura - Forevher (2 weeks; peak #7)
    14 8 Blanck Mass - Animated Violence Mild (2 weeks; peak #8)
15 NE Redd Kross - Beyond The Door SPOTIFY

Around here the Christmas lights just get rebranded to "winter lights" and don't get taken down until March or April (slight exaggeration, but they do stay up way too long in many places).

I find Taylor's new album mediocre, by far her worst album. I like "You Need to Calm Down", and "Daylight" may have some potential, but the rest are (while not unlistenable) boring/uninteresting.

Lover is that good? Must listen. If only there are tracks at least half as good as Style or Blank Space, I will love it.

2 NE Cigarettes After Sex - Heavenly - probably their poppiest song
    ALBUM
1 NE Taylor Swift - Lover - quite boring and overproduced, a nice first listen, but no real lasting impact, "Afterglow" is the only real highlight. In general, the lyrics & production are so direct, the personnel Taylor had at her disposal can do much more complicated multilayered metaphors and forward-thinking sophisticated song structures.

That BBC song is good, very instant! Really don’t like Charli and HAIM though.

I can't find a that's big enough for my shock response. Reputation was ill-focussed and had several songs with no melody at all.
I guess synth-pop just doesn't do it for some people and they only want pre 1989 Swift.
EDIT; or the synth-pop is too subtle or laid-back for some - see Pitchfork review in post below

Thanks for the feedback. I mean, that's why i was stunned that St. Vincent had done that song! Maybe she only contributed a line or two? I would agree re Joel Little and Lorde but Antonoff is pretty straightforward with most of his work. Bleachers would be as big as Fun. if they had the exposure and Bleachers albums are less arty and difficult than Fun. ones.

I forgot to mention the singles in my write-up: The Archer could easily be Allie X or (as the Pitchfork review suggests) Chromatics (i thought it was obvious from listening to it so left it to speak for itself initially). You Need To Calm Down has a similar backing melody/rhythm as Straight To Hell by The Clash (used for MIA's Paper Planes) (but more calypso than dub-reggae).

There's actually plenty of "indie" people that like it in her thread so maybe i shouldn't have been as defensive.

For me, definitely yes. Reputation was my third most played full-length album in 2017, with two songs with 300+ plays and five more with at least 50 plays. Red was Taylor's peak for me; up until that point she got better with every album and after that has gotten worse with every album. But I understand this is extremely subjective.

Very surprising to me as you loved Kitten when they were more synth-pop.
Different techniques of melody, i suppose.

I also should say to Heppolo that Kitten's Memphis is very simple and direct and could almost be a Taylor song in that respect.
There is nothing simple and direct about False God - the exact opposite. My reading is different to others of it - faith/delusion, love/sex, denial/affirmal

I checked the sleeve credits and St. Vincent apparently also plays guitar on Cruel Summer - it doesn't even sound like it HAS guitar on it! So her writing credit can't be for making a guitar sound invisible.
