Donna Summer Changes The Face Of MTV!!

Did you know that Donna Summer was the first African-American woman to be nominated for an MTV Video Music Award?

Summer’s ‘She Works Hard for the Money’ video was nominated for the Best Female Video trophy at the first MTV VMA ceremony in 1984 and earned her the distinction of being the only African-American female artist on the list of nominees. Unfortunately, she lost the accolade to Cyndi Lauper’s ‘Girls Just Want to Have Fun’.

‘She Works Had for the Money’ was also nominated for the Best Choreography in a Video award, which would have been given to its choreographer, Arlene Phillips. Unsurprisingly, Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ claimed that title.

Summer was the first African-American woman to enjoy heavy airplay on MTV during the early 1980s, thanks to ‘She Works Hard for the Money’. As a result, she was often credited with opening doors for Whitney Houston, who in turn ushered in a wave of African-American female Pop acts, such as Janet Jackson.

Watch Summer’s ‘She Works Hard for the Money’ video below:

    My favourite song of her
I am not trying to seduce you... Would you like me to seduce you? Is that what you're trying to tell me?

I think it marked a comeback of sorts because it didn't sound like what was on the radio at the time and her delivery was very powerful in contrast to the more tame pop n´soul of Donna Summer (album) with her Love is in Control and the softer ballad-like The woman in Me and even father from the older whisper-y sexy The Wanderer (which is great) and other of her songs of the time and more "regular sounding" 80s songs like Who do you think you're fooling which sounds like a Fame reject
I think it also helped it being a hit the "social element" of it and add to that the heavy rotation of the video on the music channels and also on the tv music video segments of the 80s which were very early in the AM and sometimes right before and after the news i mean it was huge

I was kinda annoyed that it peaked at #3 on the H100 back then but the other singles were as iconic as this one (Sweet Dreams by the Eurythmics and Every breath you take by The Police were #2 and #1 respectively)

Love it, one of her greatest and was a huge comeback until that damn rumor killed her career for the majority of the 80s

She is so underrated. She paved the way for many female African Americans in the mainstream.
