Well it has been a while since any "new" Irish charts were added but over the course of this thread I intend to post the charts for the first 3 years of the 70s. At this time the weekly chart stretched to 20 positions but I'll only be posting the Top 15s. These have been provided by francisplaiy from the data he used to compile the Europarade charts for this period so all credit for this goes to him. He has sent the info to me as a series of text files which I have been putting onto a spreadsheet. From this I will be posting the charts here. I do have the following years as well but will put them in a separate thread at a later date.

If anyone notices any typos or other errors please let me know (particularly if I put something as a NEW entry rather than a RE-entry). I hope to post 1 month's worth of charts per day. The dates used are as given in the emails I received.

It might be possible to add a little to these top 15s based on the contents of Larry Gogan's book - although we discovered a lot of errors and incompleteness there when I posted the charts of 1979 to 1983!

However, in this first month, I can't see many other hits listed in the book that would fill the missing positions - only these:

3rd January 1970

Top 20 would seem to also include
LOVE'S BEEN GOOD TO ME - FRANK SINATRA
TERESA - JOE DOLAN
and three other unknowns

10th January 1970

Top 20 would seem to also include
DURHAM TOWN (THE LEAVIN') - ROGER WHITTAKER
TERESA - JOE DOLAN
and three other unknowns

17th January 1970

This week's number 19 (its only week in!):
IF I THOUGHT YOU'D EVER CHANGE YOUR MIND - CILLA BLACK

Top 20 would again seem to also include
DURHAM TOWN (THE LEAVIN') - ROGER WHITTAKER
TERESA - JOE DOLAN
and two other unknowns

24th January 1970

Top 20 would seem to also include
TERESA - JOE DOLAN
and four other unknowns

31st January 1970

Top 20 would seem to also include
MELTING POT - BLUE MINK
and four other unknowns

Also as per the book:

- numbers 12 and 14 in the first week were top 20 new entries (and no others)

- everything else you have as a NE in the top fifteens seems to be a NE in that week's top 20

- "Durham Town" must have been at number 17 (its peak per the book) in at least one of its two weeks!

( Do you think it would be useful/clearer to incorporate such details into the main postings, or to just keep them as separate footnotes.....? )

If we do it on a month by month basis maybe keep them separate like we have for January. What I had also considered doing at the end was comparing the weeks on chart on the irishcharts website against what I have on my spreadsheet - that would give us a list of songs which spent further weeks inside the Top 20 and how many weeks each spent between 16 and 20.

One of these should be Martin Codd & The Herdsmen - Whisper Your Mother's Name (entered on 19/12/69 for 3 weeks)

I agree with the rest. It shows how incomplete that book (and the Irish Charts website) is.

The Tremeloes hit should be called "(Call Me) Number One" and Joe Dolan's hit is "You're Such A Good Looking Woman"

A re-entry in the top 15, but according to the book it was in the top 20 in the previous week.

Here's what else can be identified in the 16 to 20 range for February 1970:

14th February 1970

?? ?? SUGAR SUGAR - ARCHIES

Another missing hit for the month of January is probably Kenny Rogers & The First Edition - Ruby Don't Take Your Love To Town. Eddie Kelly's book (The Complete Guide To Ireland's Top 10 Hits Of The 60's) lists this as entering on 4th December 1969 and spending 8 weeks in the charts, with a peak of #4. 8 weeks would definitely have it in January's charts. But it's not conclusive as the 8 weeks he credits the record with are supposedly in the Top 10. Well there no sign of it in the Top 10 for January so there's a mistake in his book.

His follow up book The Complete Guide To Ireland's Top Ten Hits is less than reliable but his 60's book is usually pretty accurate. I'll just assume that Ruby spent 8 weeks in total in the top 20, and not the Top 10. There's nothing else in that book from the end of 1969 that could be a missing 1970 hit.

As a further indication of just how incomplete the Larry Gogan book (and website) is, there are 110 extra hits listed in Eddie's 60's book as reaching the charts between October 1962 and the end of the decade - by my reckoning. That's not including all the hits listed between 1960 and October 1962. This includes every top ten hit by Adam Faith, Marmalade, The Love Affair and several missing hits by the likes of Cliff and Elvis. 110 missing hits in the Top 10 only.... How many more are missing when you extend to Top 20s and 30s up to the end of 1983?

There are also a few differences in that book between chart peaks and weeks on chart. Mostly minor corrections, a place or two up or down. But one thing it does confirm is that Bobby Vee did not reach #1 with The Night Has A Thousand Eyes. It reached #9 and spent 1 week on the chart. Larry's book lists it as #1 with 9 weeks on the chart but doesn't list it in the Number Ones list.

Before anyone goes any further with these posts, the charts that are being posted here are fake. I don't know where they originated but somebody obviously used the information on the website to fabricate these charts. Find out where francisplaiy got them. They've estimated where they think each record is each week knowing its peak position, entry date and weeks on the chart.

I spent the afternoon in the National Library looking up old Spotlight magazines for 1969-1971. The charts listed there match the information on the website (and the infamous book)

Shaky if you have these charts look up the entry dates for Arrival - Friends, or Shocking Blue - Venus. These are wrong on the website and I'll bet whoever made up these charts copied them. Both these records entered the chart in February 1970. I guess that's one reason why they are only top 15s. Imagination can only go so far.

Also what I had earlier referred to as a mistake in Eddie Kelly's book, namely Kenny Rogers - Ruby being in the top 10 for 8 weeks, is correct. I know Eddie can't read this but apologies.

Also the website missed every single one of Marmalade's hits and they have a big one in early 1970 - Reflections of my life which reached #2.

The problem with the Library is that there are a lot of missing issues. I'll put together a spreadsheet of what I have. When I'm done if anyone wants it I'll send it along.

Apologies! I took these in good faith. I've checked those 2 singles and they both appear in "these" charts as new entries at the end of October 70 which does indeed match.

When I got the info originally I picked out a selection of songs at random and compared the peak positions and weeks on chart with the Irishcharts website and assumed that because everything tied up that they WERE the real deal. It never occured to me that someone would go to such lengths to estimate the charts for such a long period of time.

I've finished the spreadsheet for the years 1969-1971. What do you think is the best approach here? Should we post them? If so I could start a thread for each year or wait until I get 1967-68 and the years after 1971??? There are a lot of gaps but using the website we can pretty much tell which discs were on the charts but we don't know the positions. Like the way CZB has been adding the extra discs here

Perhaps, after this false start, you could begin with the real 1970, then 1971 here on this thread? Again it should hopefully be possible to see how well any gaps can be filled, based on what we know from the book and website. And it could also be interesting to see how closely it matches up with the Eddie Kelly book(s)!

OK I'll try that. 1970 doesn't get off to a good start though. Lots of gaps. I'll show you what I mean

Ireland's Top 20 - 1970

January

The dates listed here are the weekending dates of New Spotlight magazine. These differ from the dates in all of the books. I don't know why the dates in the books would be different as there is no date on the charts themselves. Spotlight changed its cover date formats a few times and this will cause some problems along the way!!!!

Where there are gaps I've used the weeks/ peaks in The Larry Gogan Book of Chart Hits and Eddie Kelly's Complete Guide To Ireland's Top Ten Hits to help out with estimates. At this stage most estimates are whether a song is Top 10 or Top 20. If I've estimated it as Top 10 I use a 00. A XX indicates a Top 20 estimate

To get the titles and week dates (only) in bold, you need to have at the end of them, rather than just which goes at the beginning.

It's odd that the dates are about two weeks adrift from Larry's book (could Spotlight perhaps have been publishing the charts two weeks later??) - as it seems clear that the last three of these weeks correspond with the first three originally posted and dated 1st / 8th / 15th January in the book.

I've only considered the last one of these (the first "complete" one) so far - later on, I'll try to find time to look at the others. But it looks to me (especially from the presence of Cilla!) that this one should include the second of "Durham Town"'s weeks - it shouldn't be in the chart you have dated w/e 16th January - and the only possible position is number 17, his peak from the book!
