Didn't see a topic for this.

True Blue is the third studio album by American singer-songwriter Madonna, released on June 30, 1986, by Sire Records. She worked with Stephen Bray and Patrick Leonard on the album while co-writing and co-producing all the songs. Deemed as Madonna's most girlish album, True Blue deals with her visions of love, work, dreams as well as disappointments, and was inspired by her then husband Sean Penn, to whom Madonna dedicated the album. Musically, the songs on the album took a different direction from her previous endeavours, incorporating classical music in order to engage an older audience who had been skeptical of her music.

The album features instrumentation from acoustic guitars, drums, synthesizers and Cuban musical instruments. The topic for the songs range from love, freedom, and in the case of "Papa Don't Preach", social issues like teenage pregnancy. After its release, True Blue received generally positive reviews from critics. They complimented the album, with one calling it great dance-pop, and described it as the archetype of the late '80s and early '90s pop albums. They also praised the fact that Madonna's voice sounded stronger than it did on her previous efforts, while commending Madonna's skills as a singer, songwriter and entertainer.

True Blue was an immediate global success, reaching number one in then record-breaking 28 countries across the world, including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States. It spent 34 consecutive weeks at the top of the European Top 100 Albums chart, longer than any other album in history. It became the world's top-selling album of 1986 and remains one of the best-selling albums of all time with sales of more than 25 million copies worldwide. All five singles released from the album reached the top five on the Billboard Hot 100, with "Live to Tell", "Papa Don't Preach", and "Open Your Heart" peaking at number one.

The album was promoted on Madonna's second concert tour, Who's That Girl World Tour, which visited cities of North America, Europe and Asia in 1987. The album's singles and their accompanying music videos have sparked debates among scholars and social groups, especially "Papa Don't Preach" for the theme of teenage pregnancy in its lyrics and "Open Your Heart" for portraying a minor entering a strip club in its music video. True Blue is credited as being the album which made Madonna truly into a superstar and cemented her reputation among the consummate musical figures of the 1980s. The album also gave her first appearance on the Guinness Book of World Records.
    Funny Facts:

    - Madonna originally confirmed the title of the album was "Live to Tell"
    - "Open Your Heart" was the first song recorded for the album
    - Artist Andy Warhol's concept of pop art was one of the inspirations behind the album artwork.

    Album tracklist:

    1. Papa Don't Preach

I believe this era was the last of the "Girly" madonna. Based on what other madonna fans have said about this era.

I bought the album one year later ( i owned just Live to tell, Papa don't preach , Open your heart and True blue as 12" ) ..after La isla bonita was released as single and I couldn't find the maxi 12" then i decided to get the LP ( my sister already got it but she refused to give me her copy to play on my job as a Dj..lol), I think it is a great POP album ...not in love with Jimmy Jimmy btw..lol

Arguably, this is the album that cemented her in pop history. Can't go wrong with the hits, but the album tracks are worth noting.

This is definitely the end of the golden era for her. I'm also loving the Marilyn Monroe look on the cover.

The end of the golden era happened in 1990 really

My 2nd favorite Madonna album. It's a flawless pop record (if we forget "Jimmy Jimmy" is included ). Both "White Heat" and "Where's The Party" could have been big hit singles if it had been released at the time.
"Love Makes The World Go Round" is nice carefree song.
Singles are all classics, but "True Blue" is somehow forgotten which is a shame since it was UK #1 single

I cannot understand the love for that song so we're even

It sounds like it had been done in 5 mins., just before they started with LP production. It's awful

This must be my second least favourite Madonna album ever due to the fact there is nothing to discover besides the singles:

    1) Papa Don't Preach: gorgeous, best Madonna song ever 20/10
    2) Open Your Heart: OK, always thought it was way overrated. I do love the MDNA tour version but the original is just a 7/10
    3) White Heat: more of the same I guess. Easily the best of the album tracks 6/10
    4) Live To Tell: this ballad was a complete revelation. Madonna's voice, sadness, passion and Sean in the video... just perfect 20/10
    5) Where's The Party: I guess this was Madonna's efforts to create something along the lines of Cyndi's GJWTHV. Not very successful 5/10
    6) True Blue: I still love this one 8/10
    7) La Isla Bonita: no need to comment 10/10
    8) Jimmy Jimmy: disposable mid-80s by the numbers pop 4/10
    9) Love Makes The World Go Round: next... sorry, there is no next 3/10

One of my favorite albums EVER!

I didn't think she could top her first two albums, but then she released True Blue and I was totally swept off my feet! All nine songs sound as if they could have been top 10 hits.

And the coversleeve is the best in history!

I bought this album the day it came out in Australia...I was about 12 and had already been a big Madonna fan from Like A virgin...but this was such an event...first she changed her look for Live to Tell then again for Papa Don't Preach and the album artwork by Herb Ritts..so iconic.....it was such a moment ... and the lp was blue vinyl

Love everything about this album (yes even Jimmy Jimmy). Would die if Madonna performed True Blue at some point again.

Horrible album if you take out the singles. The only song worth mentioning is White Heat.

@MCUK M might perform True Blue song on her Rebel Heart Tour

Couldn't disagree more. The album tracks - all 4 of them - weren't as good as the singles, granted, but there were still great pop songs. Where's The Party remains one of her best unreleased songs of her entire career (as a single).

Where Is The Party is my favorite Album track by Madonna. Such an awesome track. The Performance at the Blond Ambition Tour was flawless.

Love Makes The World Go Round is so underrated. The live Version at Live Aid was great!
