Similarly to The Feeling, Keane were a fave for me back then, they seemed to come from out of nowhere and blow up, their first album was massive with quite a few hits!

Similarly to The Feeling their appeal didn't seem to last long, after the reasonable success of their second album they seemed to just fade from the charts!

I actually think Tom Chaplin's voice is gorgeous and think the first 3 albums are really good and they showed some growth! After that they seemed to lose some spark for me...I wonder if they can re-capture my interest?

    Any fans?

Love them. Fave album is between Hopes & Fears(classic) and their latest effort Strangeland which is a return to their original sound I'd say. I actually think the lead singers voice is better than ever on the new album and he was extremely good before! Their songwriter(Tim) is just as good if not better at penning a song as Chris Martin is so they really should be bigger WW. One of the best live acts out there from what I've seen.

I don't think they've faded just yet though. I read last year that with the newest album they are only the 2nd act after The Beatles to have their first 5 albums enter at #1. So they still have somewhat of a fanbase there!

Oh yes I completely forgot about the album getting to #1! What was the chart run?

Yes I guess that shows they do have somewhat of a fan base, but they are not as popular as before they used to be everywhere on the first album and have faded in that sense! ;)

Not sure but according to the YTD thread it's sold just under 200k so far in the UK which is ok-ish in this climate. I didn't even know they had an album out until months after it's release!

Everyone has faded tbh, only a handful of acts are consistently popular anymore. They are still quite an active touring act though so that's something. You should check out Strangeland if you liked the first album!

Yes I will! I've been a little nostalgic, they were big when I was a chart follower and I used to listen to radio back then and I didn't have the internet! :(

That's probably the moment I stopped liking them. Nah it has grown on me, but tbh it was when my interest in them went down. :-?

I guess I like Stop For a Minute from Sandra more.

Their début album was a smash though.

To celebrate ten incredible years of success, Keane will release ‘The Best Of Keane’ on 11th November 2013, through Island Records. It is available to pre-order now.

The album features 18 fan favourites, plucked from the band’s five consecutive UK Number One albums, alongside two powerful new songs, ‘Higher Than The Sun’ and ‘Won’t Be Broken’.

The Best of Keane will come in three physical formats:

    - 1CD Standard version
    - 2CD Deluxe version (with a collection of the band's B-sides)
    - Super deluxe version (2CDs, plus acoustic DVD and book)

You can also vote to decide the setlist for the special acoustic performance DVD which will be on the Super deluxe edition, by clicking here.

Says Tom: “It’s over a decade ago that we were busy making our first record 'Hopes & Fears’. Having got together in the mid 90s, things took a while to get going for us as a band, but once they did, it became an incredible ride! We've had 5 consecutive number 1 albums, toured the world countless times and experienced some very heady days.

We wanted to put something out there to mark this milestone, to say thank you to all our fans and to try and send you all on a journey through the songs which we're most proud of.

Listening through this ‘Best Of’, I feel like we given a pretty good account of ourselves over the years. We hope you agree!”

I've been listening to this song for years but never saw the vid! Not sure what to make of it, not what I expected at all.

I loved everything they did... until that last album. I felt like they were doing a safe by-the-numbers attempt at trying to recapture the magic of "Hopes And Fears" simply because the Night Train EP divided fans so much.

    for me too.
somewhere only we know, this is the last time, everybody's changing, is it any wonder, spiralling, love is the end... all were part of the soundtrack of my best years.
then that song with knaan and with its silly video ruined something.
never listened to the rest of the EP and to strangeland.

    Keane: Breakthrough, breakdown and break-up?
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-24999133

The band scrapped a tour when Tom Chaplin went into rehab in 2006.
Asked when he has come closest to quitting the band, Chaplin looks back to a drink-fuelled breakdown in 2006.

"We were in Japan and I'd just been on a bender," he says. "Cumulatively there had been a lot of episodes where I felt very unhappy and was pushing the self-destruct button a lot. I just walked out of the hotel, got on a plane and flew home. No-one knew where I was or what I was doing. I remember feeling quite relieved on the plane home, 'Thank god I can just leave all this behind now.'"

"It was because I hated myself more than anything else. It was a general self-loathing, really. I found I lashed out by trying to hurt the things that were important to me. You want to destroy everything. It wasn't long before I realised it would be a very bad idea, especially mid-tour, to throw in the towel."

After promoting their greatest hits album, the band will be put on hold as Chaplin makes a solo album.

"We are taking a break from Keane, but we're not splitting up," the singer says.

"In order to do some of the things I want to do, you have to clear the decks. I've wanted to do a solo thing for ages, so that urge has become undeniable for me."

He will attempt to use the solo album to prove himself as a songwriter. "It's something I used to do for years and years and then Tim got so damned good at it that I just gave up, really," he says.

"When you're denying a part of yourself like that it's not healthy. So it's a voyage of self-exploration for me, rather selfishly. But it has to be that way."
