Funky Nassau by Beginning Of The End reached 31 in the BBC chart and thus should not have been starred. Mea culpa.

This is another sales based chart? Or airplay or requests mixed in too?

As these ILR stations were set up as Local based stations most of them would do a local sales chart, perhaps based on 3 or 4 record shops or whoever was willing to supply them with information. I doubt at this stage it was based on airplay as such things were uncommon in UK radio back then. It had only just come on air in 1973. My Local station Hallam went on air in 1974, it too had a top 40, but it was never based on airplay. It probably followed Capitol's lead.

Same here, my local station Metro also went on air in 1974 and counted down a local top 40 sales chart on a Saturday morning though I don't recall the chart actually starting until early 1976. For a while I used to write down the chart every week but after a while stopped doing so and later binned the charts.

What's the original format of these charts Telstar?

Perhaps you can scan them and convert them to a PDF and upload them to PDF Archive. It would be quicker than having to type them out.

I'm wondering if there is some other element than straight sales used in compiling these.

Most of the #1s were not National ones and a few of them didn't even go top 10.

Can't see London being THAT different.

Actually that doesn't surprise me. I used to listen to Pennine Radio in Bradford and there top 30 was not a bit like that of the National Chart. These charts would only be based on a few stores in London, or Bradford. The BMRB national chart tried to eliminate these "local" trends from their survey.
Plus back in 1974 a lot of the big name stores would not take part in the national chart, including Woolworth's, in fact they didn't start till 1976, which might account for why the 1976's chart has more "mellow" records in then the early 70's. If the local Woolies supplied Capitol with sales information, because of an advertising deal, then the chart would be different.
And actually London might well be different to the rest of the UK, back then! It was probably more multicultural then the rest of the UK for one thing.

Some of the Superpop papers contained Local Radio charts for 1979, the links to them can be found on the Record Business thread in this section. They too have many records in them that are not found in the top 75.

    Was this not a phone-in chart, pure-and-simple?

Which would explain your concerns, Rub, telephone voting, that is!

Interesting, and rather marvellous to think that almost 40-year-old transcripts are proving worthwhile and appearing online I assume for t he first time!

I don't know much about the methodologies used in the various ILR local/regional countdowns; in my naive youth I always just assumed that they were compiled from whatever sales returns they could glean from local stores, but all the posts from far-more knowledgeable posters like Robbie and Graham on the 'Record Business' thread show that was not always the case, and that a variety of different methods were employed by different stations over time. I do recall that London's Capital Countdowns of the 1980s (less-so in the '90s) were often at considerable variance to what was being reported nationally on the 'official' Gallup chart and I did wonder how it could be that London could be so distinct in its trends from the national picture. But then as Graham has said, it isn't so surprising as it apparently was the case in other regions. Or, maybe as Topicel alleges, these countdowns were in fact just based on telephone votes, though that's not something I've heard of before (at least not with the old ILR charts).

I vaguely recollect hearing some daft daily weekday chart show on Radio 1 during the early 1990s based on phone votes (think it was known as 'Mark Goodier's Mega Hits' or something suitably corny!) and on hearing a single had polled enough votes to land within the Top 3, yet was languishing below No 30 in that week's sales chart never to rise higher, wondering why some people were so keen to ring in and vote for a song, yet were apparently less-bothered about going out to actually buy it! Okay the single would've cost money but so did the phonecall (then again it was probably kids whose parents paid the bill - now of course we get "Always get the bill-payer's permission first before calling, kids"!).

In our region we used to have Radio Mercury who did a comprehensive Top 40 run-down from their inception in 1984 until some time in the '90s. Conveniently it aired from 3 till 5 on a Sunday, thereby allowing the keenest of chartwatchers to switch over to R1 for the official 40 from 5 to 7. I was always led to believe that was based on local sales samples, but I have no proof. I'd like to know for sure actually; there didn't used to be massive variation in positions from the national ranking.

I have probably confused the Capital Countdown with another of their 'promotions', the Hit Line. That was definitely a phone-in and was daily as I recall.

Sorry for misleading anyone. I'll not interfere further.
