Just a short information: For the past few years, Thursday was always the day I posted the new updates of My Charts. Sometimes sooner, sometimes later, but these were always exceptions and Thursday always has been the 'chart day'. Due to my new job that I started two weeks ago, I'm currently thinking about moving this day to Friday. I don't want to fix this yet but I just wanted to share the possibility that My Charts may be posted on a Friday instead of Thursday every now and then from now on.

Singles Top40

Spoiler!

Lindsey Stirling gets a fourth week atop the chart with “The Upside”, making it the longest running number one single of the year so far. This may be a good sign for the track, as it didn’t happen too often to see a song getting more than three weeks at number one lately and if they did it, they ended up as huge smashes. She’s closely followed by Sam Smith’s “How Do You Sleep?” (3-2) and the first new entry: “Looking For America” by Lana Del Rey. Even though the singer will release her new album in two weeks, “Looking For America” is currently just a stand alone single and a track she has written following the mass shootings around two weeks ago. The singer is also having a second new entry with the soundtrack single “Season Of The Witch” at #5. Both songs included, Lana has 20 chart entry to date with all of them reaching the Top5.

Other new and re-entries this week: Besides Lana Del Rey, Finnish siren Tarja will release her new album “In The Raw” in two weeks as well, with “Tears In Rain” having been released as its third single a week ago. Coincidentally, it enters the chart at #4 as her 20th chart entry as well. Following the release of her second album “Inspire By True Events”, Tori Kelly gets her very first Top20 hit as “Change Your Mind” makes a comeback at #15. It’s only her second chart entry overall following last years “Never Alone” featuring Kirk Franklin (#23). American singer-songwriter YEBBA finally seems to get some mainstream attention, as she was featured as guest singer on the latest albums by Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran and Mark Ronson. “Where Do You Go” is her first new single as a lead artist since these featurings, becoming her very first chart notation at #25 this week. The final new arrival of the week belongs to Katy Perry. Having been one of the biggest chart forces not too long ago, it’s a huge shock to see her new single “Small Talk” only making it to #36 as her first chart entry as a lead artist to miss out a Top10 spot. Last but not least, there are two re-entries coming from the Drag Race universe with Monique Heart’s “Brown Cow Stunning” (#27) and RuPaul & Co.’s “Super Queen” (33).

Other talking points this week: There are several climbers that are worth a mention this week. The first one is “Freaking Me Out” by Ava Max. The singer has had two songs with a #13 peak so far, but her latest chart entry jumps 17-6 in its second week to become her very first Top10 hit. Jax Jones and Bebe Rexha have teamed up on “Harder” that already stayed on the charts for some weeks but increases 18-11 this week for a new peak as well. Blair St. Clair’s “Easy Love” is still having a revival as it continues to climb, up 30-23 this week. Lana Del Rey’s “Hope Is A Dangerous Thing…” is also able to rise further following its re-entry a week ago (29-26). The last of these climbers is Ester Peony’s “On A Sunday” (33-30). While Michela’s “Chameleon” and Tamta’s “Replay” leave the chart this time, the Romanian ESC entry of this year ends up as one of just two remaining tracks from the contest now despite having peaked at #17. Speaking of ESC entries, the other remaining track is Keiino’s “Spirit In The Sky” (28-32) that gets certified with Platinum this week as the third song to do so from this years contest.

Ava Max’ “Freaking Me Out” is the biggest climber while Ariana Grande & Social House’s “Boyfriend” has a terrible drop and falls 6-37 as the biggest loser of the week.

Album Top20

With just one new arrival for the third week in a row, this is yet another very stagnant week for the Album Top20 overall, but it’s just the calm before the storm. There are highly anticipated new albums by Lana Del Rey, Tarja and Taylor Swift coming out in two weeks while a week afterwards sees the release of new albums by Lindsey Stirling, Melanie Martinez and The Highwomen (Brandi Carlile, Maren Morris & Co.). So it’s going to be very busy soon and the battle for the top spot will most likely be as tight as it wasn’t for a very long time now, especially with three of these artists being used to top the charts very easily.

The new entry of the week is Tori Kelly’s new studio album “Inspired By True Events”. The singer-songwriter rose to fame with her debut album “Unbreakable Smile” (2015), but made her very first chart entry with the Gospel mini album “Hiding Place” nearly a year ago (#7 for two weeks). It seems to have been a good preparation for her new era, as in combination with the quiet new release schedule, “Inspired” makes a rather impressive debut atop the chart.

Other talking points this week: Except Miley Cyrus’ “She Is Coming” (9-12), the upper half has the same album as last week with all of them also making very small moves up- or downwards. Ashley Tisdale’s run keeps on being impressive, as “Symptoms” has been in the Top5 for its entire chart run so far and even rises back up 3-2. “Symptoms” even looked like it would be the chart topper this week at first. Two of the most successful artists ever in My Charts history made their comebacks earlier this year: Kerli and Within Temptation. As expected, both of their albums made a strong impact, though their success was rather short lived compared to the success of their predecessors. This week, both of their albums are back to a better showing again, as “Resist” jumps 20-11 for Within Temptation while “Shadow Works” re-enters at #15 for Kerli.

Bubbling Under

A bunch of new releases that didn’t make the main chart are new on the Bubbling Under chart, though for yet another week they couldn’t change the top as Julia Michaels’ “Body” gets a fifth consecutive week at number one. She’s followed by Sabrina Carpenter’s “Looking At Me” (3-2) and the first new entry, “Coffee” by Tori Kelly. It’s the opener to the current number one album “Inspired By True Events”.

Alessia Cara has released her second album late last year but is already moving on with an EP called “This Summer” that comes out soon. The second single of this EP is called “Rooting For You” and enters the Bubbling Under chart at #5. Miranda Lambert is also preparing the release of a new record with “Mess With My Head” being the latest song from the upcoming album (#6). Mike Posner is new at #7 with his Wiz Khalifa collaboration “Prince Akeem” while Swiss singer-songwriter Eliane debuts at #10 with her new single “This Time.

Taylor Swift’s “The Archer” (2-4), Iggy Azalea’s “Comme des garcons” (5-8) and Ashley Tisdale’s “Insomnia” (6-9) make the Bubbling Under chart complete.

"The Archer" is a song by American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift from her upcoming seventh studio album Lover (2019). It was written and produced by Swift and Jack Antonoff. The song was released as the first promotional single from the album on July 23, 2019.

By saying that she obviously doesn't deny that it's a promo single so we can still see it as one, but I've decided not to see it as a (promo) single two weeks ago and stand by that. Sometimes it's really difficult to categorize songs as album tracks, promo singles, proper singles or whatever they are nowadays, maybe I need to move away from that when it comes to my chart.

My Charts - week 34/2019 – 23 august 2019 - the Comeback week

Singles Top40

It's pretty much the end of an era this week, as several songs that were defining the weekly charts lately have big(ger) drops while several new songs make rather big impacts. There are a total of 11 new and 5 re-entries on the Singles Top40 this week, making it one of the busiest weeks ever. One of the reasons for that amount of new entries is that this chart basically includes two weeks, as the new releases from the 16th august and the ones from the 23rd august are debuting this week. This is the first attempt to try out a new posting schedule of My Charts.

French singer-songwriter Indila made a huge impact with her debut single “Dernière danse” nearly six years ago and a similar impression with her debut album “Mini World” that came out in early 2014. Unfortunately, after a very well planned debut era, the singer disappeared completely and there hasn’t been a sign from her ever since – until now! Her new single “Parle à ta tête” came out on Friday and immediately makes it to the top as her second chart topper and fifth chart entry overall. Even though her debut era wasn’t an outstanding success on My Charts, it remained one of my most favorite eras up to now and this shows as “Dernière danse” (#13), “Tourner dans le vide” (#21) and “S.O.S” (#32) are all re-entries this week – a very rare feat based on one new single!

Just two weeks following the double release of “Freaking Me Out” (6-9) and “Blood, Sweat & Tears” (no entry), Ava Max already served another pop hit with her new single “Torn”. “Freaking Me Out” just became her first Top10 hit and “Torn” already surpasses its peak by arriving at #2. Drag Race contestant Tatianna (Season 2 and All Stars 2) gets her very first chart notation as the surprisingly radio-friendly “Love Me Harder”-esque track “Hurt My Feelings” enters the chart at #3.

Other new and re-entries this week: German Pop princess Lena has teamed up with German singer-songwriter Nico Santos on a new single called “Better”. The song was a big contender for the top spot this week at first but ends up at #4 now as Lena’s 12th Top5 hit and Nico’s very first chart notation ever. It’s been a very exciting year for Miley Cyrus so far. It all started with the Mark Ronson collaboration “Nothing Breaks Like A Heart”, continued with the “She Is Coming” mini album and its single “Mother’s Daughter” (31-34 this week), went to the Netflix series ‘Black Mirror’ and the surprising success of Ashley O’s “On A Roll” and now we’ve arrived on her new single “Slide Away”. Despite the mentioned three singles all having different backgrounds, they all still made it to the top of the Singles Top40 so it’s rather shocking to see “Slide Away” only debuting at #6 as her first chart entry to miss out a Top3 peak so far and only the third not to debut in the Top3.

It’s finally Taylor Swift’s album release week! Her seventh studio album “Lover” makes its debut on the Album Top20 this week so it’s not surprising to see the two singles making re-entries with “You Need To Calm Down” being back at #14 while “ME!” re-enters at #25. The title track was chosen as the new single just a few days previously and also debuts at #8 this week. Just missing out a Top10 arrival is “Shadow”, the new single by Macklemore and a collaboration with singer-songwriter IRO. The track starts at #11, immediately becoming Macklemore’s second highest peaking chart entry ever, only behind the Platinum certified #5 peaking “Can’t Hold Us”. Also arriving in the upper half is “Sunshine”, the new single by Danish singer Aura Dione and the follow-up to her still successfully charting “Last Man In The World” (8-16). The new track is new at #15 as her third entry this year, making 2019 the first year in which she has three different chart entries.

Still three more debuts to go! Fifth Harmony not only proved to be a successful girl group during their three albums, but their members also proved to be successful solo artists with all of them having made several chart entries in the last two years. This week it’s Normani’s turn, as she has released her new single “Motivation” (#23). Cascada are back! The German dance group got several hits around ten years ago and also took part on the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 with “Glorious” (#1 for one week, certified with Gold). Even though their entry was a chart hit, they failed to be successful at the contest itself and every new single since then also failed to be a hit for them, so it’s already a step into the right direction to see their new single “Like The Way I Do” debuting at #26 this week. Last but not least, in a week full of new and re-entries, it’s still rather surprising to see Charlie Puth’s comeback single “I Warned Myself” being the lowest new arrival of the week at #28. There’s still enough room for growth, though all four singles from his second album “Voicenotes” weren’t high peaking chart entries but showed good longevity.

Other talking points this week: Lindsey Stirling and Elle King’s “The Upside” drops 1-7 but gets certified with Gold this week. As expected, a lot songs fall out of the chart and Keiino’s “Spirit In The Sky” (ex #32) and Ester Peony’s “On A Sunday” (ex #30) are two of them, making this week the first in nearly a half year without ESC entries. Though Keiino are still charting with “Praying” that gets certified with Gold this week (24-35).

There’s no climber this week and therefore there’s no biggest climber, though there are several big drops with Tarja’s “Tears In Rain” tumbling down 4-29 as the biggest loser this week.

After a very quiet month, it's finally been time for the start of several weeks with highly anticipated new releases as Taylor Swift just put out her seventh studio album "Lover". It immediately gets the top spot this week, becoming her fourth number one album following "Speak Now" (#1 for five weeks, 3x Platinum), “Red” (#1 for one week, Platinum) and "1989" (#1 for one week, back at #16 and getting certified with 2x Platinum this week) . "Lover" also becomes the singer's sixth charting album overall, as "Fearless" (#5, Gold) and "Reputation" (#3, Gold) missed the top spot but still made quite an impact.

Indila already makes a huge impact on the Singles Top40, not only with her new single “Parle à ta tête” but also with her back catalogue. Her debut album “Mini World” also benefits a lot from the new single and makes an impressive re-entry at #2 this week. It even gets certified with Platinum. Tori Kelly’s “Inspired By True Events” dips 1-3 and completes the Top3.

Other new and re-entries this week: US Rap legend Missy Elliott surprise-released her new EP “Iconology” last Friday that becomes her very first notation on the Album Top20 at #9. British singer Shura caught some attention with her debut album “Nothing’s Real” a little bit over three years ago (#2, six weeks on the chart). The “What’s It Gonna Be?” singer has finally released her sophomore album called “forevher” a week ago but fails to make a similar impact as the new set only arrives at #14. Last but not least, there’s a second re-entry with “Lust For Life” by Lana Del Rey at #20. The album makes its return due to the hype for her upcoming new album “Norman F*****g Rockwell!” that should make its debut in a week.

Other talking points this week: Julia Michaels’ “Inner Monologue Part 2” remains at #5 for a third consecutive week. Banks’ “III” drops 4-7 but gets certified with Gold this week as her second album doing so. Kerli’s “Shadow Works” returns to the upper half following its re-entry a week ago (15-10).

Bubbling Under

It’s also a very busy week on the Bubbling Under chart with several other new releases missing out a debut on the main chart plus Taylor Swift’s album release making an impact. Though despite all the things that are going on, Julia Michaels’ “Body” is still unstoppable and gets a sixth consecutive week atop the chart.

Julia’s biggest competition came from Maren Morris. The country star already made the Bubbling Under chart with “The Bones” earlier this year, as it was the clear standout from her second studio album “Girl” and even did surprisingly well on the Spotify chart at that time. And even though her team and herself reacted a little bit late, they still reacted and finally released a video for the song, making it the official second single of the album. That’s the reason why the track is able to re-peak at #2 this week and may even get to the main chart next week.

Taylor Swift’s “Lover” is responsible for three entries on the Bubbling Under chart this week, as “Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince” debuts at #3, “Cruel Summer” arrives at #4 and “The Archer” is still charting and dips 4-5.

Other new entries this week: Babymetal’s “Elevator Girl” is new at #6 as another taste from their upcoming new album “Metal Galaxy”, Bea Miller has teamed up with Jessie Reyez on “Feels Like Home” (#8), Charli XCX & Sky Ferreira’s collaboration “Cross You Out” makes it to #9 and Gabriella Cilmi arrives at #10 with her new single “The Water”. Last but not least, Sabrina Carpenter’s “Looking At Me” drops 2-7 as the final song on the Bubbling Under chart.

I wasn't sure about Indila's new song at first, but it became a huge grower for me. However, it definitely doesn't have the same magic like "Dernière danse" & Co. had.

Yeah, I'm not the biggest fan of "The Water". It's just ok to me and being ok is currently not enough to make my main chart

It's crazy how all these media things are so freaking successful these days. Video Games seem to be as popular as never before, movies are making as huge grosses as never before and music seems to reach as many people as never before through streaming.

So true! I think smartphones played a big role in giving people easier/constant access to media like music, movies, and video games (or watching other people play video games) Now we can enjoy those things basically anywhere, all on the same device (as long as we have reception and battery left) The fact that movies are still grossing so much is really impressive too, and I'm not sure how they're managing that (aside from higher ticket costs/inflation), especially with services like Netflix making it so convenient to watch everything from the comfort of home. The Marvel Cinematic Universe probably deserves a good chunk of the credit there, since it got a lot of people hooked on following every movie they release.

You just made me realize that it actually shouldn't have been the biggest surprise to see OTR slaying the way it did in the US... I mean, as we both agreed on, country songs (and as you pointed out also rap songs) are usually much bigger in the US than everywhere else, so considering how big OTR has been everywhere else, it probably could have been expected to see it being such a monster in the US. Anyways... I'm not into charts as much as I used to do at all and my 'favorite countries' changed to Switzerland and Germany, so I'm not really up-to-date with the US charts so I was shocked when I just read that "Bad Guy" is also still #2 (with OTR obviously still leading). I hope they change the rules some day as the charts are way too stagnant these days.

That's pretty understandable. The Hot 100 is SO slow these days, while the UK chart has all of those questionable ACR and number-of-songs-allowed-per-artist rules that give songs very weird chart runs, so I can see why people would lose interest in regularly following those. On the bright side: "Bad Guy" finally made it to No. 1 on the Hot 100, and was promptly replaced by "Señorita," so at least we're seeing some turnover on top again!

Well, at the time of its release, I absolutely hated this song. Ellie just completely won me over previously, I kinda disliked the 50 Shades franchise and so the song came off as a complete sell-out to me and seemed way too basic for her. It still made it to #6 on My Charts after a while but still ended up as her second least successful single here pre-"Close To Me" ("Close To Me", "Sixteen" and "Hate Me" 'topped' that). If it makes up for it: I can live with it these days and I know this was a very unpopular opinion of mine back then. I still don't really know why I disliked it as much as I did; I couldn't even be happy for its success even though Ellie completely deserved such a huge hit.

I LOVED LMLYD, but I can see where you're coming from with those critiques: it was probably Ellie's poppiest single at that point (maybe equal to "Burn"), it sounds like it could've been written/sung by anybody, and many people don't think highly of 50 Shades (the books or movies). It makes sense to feel disappointed when an artist you normally love and respect releases a song that seems mediocre to promote a movie/franchise that you don't care for at all.

To be honest with you, it wasn't as romantic as I was hoping for, more the opposite, as we had some deep talks that I didn't want to have at that time, but looking back they were needed and it's all completely good how it was. But yes, it was just us two together ( ), it was a great time and it felt SO good to have that week completely off from my daily life.

Damn - sounds like that trip got pretty heavy/intense, but you still came out of it OK? I don't want to make you talk about it too much more, but I'm glad everything's still good between you two, and those difficult talks were ultimately for the best.

As you know, I love to share these little discographies <3 Well, he was blocked by the nine-week-reigning "Break Free" by Ariana Ah yes, I was pretty underwhelmed by "The Thrill Of It All" compared to his debut. It wasn't a bad album, it just lacked of several more highlights other than just a few tracks. Speaking of Sam, I don't really remember how his previous stuff did on your charts, so I wonder if you ever checked his albums out?

That's amazing! I already saw Ava's slayage on your charts a few days ago and was so happy, as "Freaking Me Out" is growing on me massively and may become her biggest hit on my charts so far. Also nice to hear you're enjoying "Blood, Sweat & Tears" that much, so I guess I need to give it another chance as "Freaking Me Out" was miles ahead of the other for me and I kinda put all of my attention to it and never really replayed "Blood, Sweat & Tears" ever since. Her streak of singles has been very solid so far and I would love to get something more (an album, maybe? But you never know these days...)

I wish! It'd be awesome to get an album from her before the end of 2019, but I wonder if they'll just keep releasing singles until she scores another hit as big as "Sweet But Psycho."

"Bad As The Boys" is a nice second taste of her upcoming album. I've already enjoyed "Glad He's Gone" so I'm really positive about "Sunshine Kitty", especially after being disappointed by her last album. Iirc you quite enjoyed her last album, right?

Eh, Blue Lips was a bit of a letdown for me (though it still has some highlights, like "Cycles" and "Hey You Got Drugs?"). I enjoyed Queen Of The Clouds and Lady Wood about equally, though, so I'll definitely give Sunshine Kitty a chance.

"The Archer" is really beautiful and would have been a sure Top10 entry if she wouldn't have said it's not even going to be a promo single (and therefor I did-n't allow it on my main chart). Some-times the Bubbling Under chart is kinda tricky; "Body" for example would have even blocked Lindsey on the main chart if it wasn't just an album track. Anyways, Taylor is already releasing another song as a promo single this week plus the third real single is also coming before the album release, so these are exciting times for her fans!

Ah, OK - I'd been thinking of your Bubbling Under chart more like a "not quite good enough, but could enter the main chart soon" list, but after reading what you said above, I'm remembering that you mentioned it's a place for non-singles to shine too.

• I added your new No. 1 a couple days ago, after you posted that Top 5 teaser in the Parade thread, and I'm LOVING it! It's such a wild, quirky, catchy ride. I'm not familiar with Indila at all, but it seems like a fair number of people on UKMIX already knew of her and enjoyed her debut several years ago.
• I'm a little surprised by the amount of hype that "Torn" is getting around UKMIX. I do like it, but it's probably my least favorite of the singles/promo tracks she's released after "Sweet But Psycho." Still, if "Torn" helps her avoid going down as a 1.5-hit-wonder on most official charts, I'll be fine with that!
• Speaking of Ava, I'm SO glad that "Freaking Me Out" got as high as No. 6! People seem very unimpressed with FMO (especially now that "Torn" is out), so reaching No. 6 here feels like a huge triumph.
• Lovin' the Lover effect! I forgot that "ME!" tumbled straight out of your chart after debuting at No. 20.
• "Motivation" has been a really pleasant surprise, after both "Love Lies" and "Dancing With A Stranger" were just "alright" for me. I just learned that Ari co-wrote it, so that certainly helps to explain why it's clicked with me so much!
• Poor "Small Talk," though.
